For those who have attained the first meditative absorption, in the sensual-sphere of existence, at the moment of arising of in-breath and out-breath, for them both bodily activity arises and verbal activity arises.

Or else, for whom verbal activity arises, does bodily activity arise for that one?

Without in-breath and out-breath, at the moment of arising of applied and sustained thought, for them verbal activity arises, but bodily activity does not arise for them. For those who have attained the first meditative absorption, in the sensual-sphere of existence, at the moment of arising of in-breath and out-breath, for them both verbal activity arises and bodily activity arises.

For whom bodily activity arises, does mental activity arise for that one? Yes.

Or else, for whom mental activity arises, does bodily activity arise for that one?

Without in-breath and out-breath, at the arising moment of consciousness, for them mental activity arises, but bodily activity does not arise for them. At the moment of arising of in-breath and out-breath, for them both mental activity arises and bodily activity arises.

In the fine-material-sphere and immaterial-sphere of existence, there verbal activity arises, but bodily activity does not arise there. In the first meditative absorption and in the sensual-sphere of existence, there both verbal activity arises and bodily activity arises.

Where bodily activity arises, does mental activity arise there? Yes.

Or else, where mental activity arises, does bodily activity arise there?

In the fourth meditative absorption, in the fine-material-sphere and immaterial-sphere of existence, there mental activity arises, but bodily activity does not arise there. In the first meditative absorption, the second meditative absorption, the third meditative absorption, and in the sensual-sphere of existence, there both mental activity arises and bodily activity arises.

22. Where verbal activity arises, does mental activity arise there? Yes.

Or else, where mental activity arises, does verbal activity arise there?

In the second meditative absorption, the third meditative absorption, and the fourth meditative absorption, there mental activity arises, but verbal activity does not arise there. In the first meditative absorption, in the sensual-sphere of existence, in the fine-material-sphere of existence, and in the immaterial-sphere of existence, there both mental activity arises and verbal activity arises.

In the fine-material-sphere and immaterial-sphere of existence, there bodily activity does not arise, but verbal activity does arise there. In the fourth meditative absorption and in the non-percipient being realm, there both bodily activity does not arise and verbal activity does not arise.

Or else, where verbal activity does not arise, does bodily activity not arise there?

In the second meditative absorption and the third meditative absorption, there verbal activity does not arise, but bodily activity does arise there. In the fourth meditative absorption and in the non-percipient being realm, there both verbal activity does not arise and bodily activity does not arise.

Where bodily activity does not arise, does mental activity not arise there?

In the fourth meditative absorption, in the fine-material-sphere and immaterial-sphere of existence, there bodily activity does not arise, but mental activity does arise there. In the non-percipient being realm, there both bodily activity does not arise and mental activity does not arise.

In the second meditative absorption, the third meditative absorption, and the fourth meditative absorption, there verbal activity does not arise, but mental activity does arise there. In the non-percipient being realm, there both verbal activity does not arise and mental activity does not arise.

For those being reborn in the Pure Abodes, for non-percipient beings, for them there both verbal activity had not arisen and mental activity had not arisen.

For those who immediately after this consciousness will have the final consciousness of sensual-sphere beings arise, for those in their last existence in the fine-material-sphere and immaterial-sphere of existence, and for those who, having been reborn in the fine-material-sphere and immaterial-sphere of existence, will attain final nibbāna, for them passing away, for them verbal activity will arise, but bodily activity will not arise for them. For the others, for them both verbal activity will arise and bodily activity will arise.

For whom bodily activity will arise, will mental activity arise for that one? Yes.

Or else, for whom mental activity will arise, will bodily activity arise for that one?

For those who immediately after this consciousness will have the final consciousness of sensual-sphere beings arise, for those in their last existence in the fine-material-sphere and immaterial-sphere of existence, and for those who, having been reborn in the fine-material-sphere and immaterial-sphere of existence, will attain final nibbāna, for them passing away, for them mental activity will arise, but bodily activity will not arise for them.
