Commentary on the Life History of the Elder Ārakkhadāyaka and So On

In the thirty-second chapter, the first, second, and third life histories are easily understood indeed.

16. In the fourth life history, "I scattered the finest water-born flowers" means I scattered, I venerated with the finest water-born flowers, namely flowers such as waterlilies and lotuses. This is the meaning.

The fifth life history is clear in itself.

26-27. In the sixth life history, "the highest shrine, by name, of Sikhi, the kinsman of the world" means the highest shrine of the Blessed One Sikhī, the kinsman, the relative of the entire triple world. "In the wilderness" means devoid of the passage of people; "in the wood" means devoid of the clamour of human beings; the connection is: it was in the great forest. "I wandered blindly then" means at that time in the forest, blind by the state of having lost the way, not blind by the eye; the meaning is: I wander about, I seek the path. "Coming out from the wilds" means by me coming out from the great forest, a lion's seat, the highest seat, or the seat of the lion, the Blessed One, was seen - this is the meaning. "Having arranged on one shoulder and made salutation with joined palms" means having arranged the upper robe on one shoulder and having placed joined palms on the head - this is the meaning. "I praised the leader of the world" means I offered praise, I extolled the one who leads the entire triple world to that Nibbāna, causing them to attain it - this is the meaning.

34. In the seventh life history, "Sudassana, the great hero" means beautiful to behold, of captivating appearance because of having a body endowed with the thirty-two marks of a great man, of great energy, Siddhattha, the Blessed One - this is the connection. "Dwells in the excellent house" means he dwells in the excellent monastery. This is the meaning.

The eighth, ninth, and tenth life histories are clear in meaning.

The commentary on the thirty-second chapter is complete.
