1.
The Life History of the Elder Tissametteyya
Having eaten fallen fruit, dwells in the mountain caves.
2.
Seeking the highest good, for rebirth in the Brahma world.
3.
Wishing to uplift me, he came to my presence.
4.
I will tend the fire, from that there will be purity for me."
5.
You tend the fire, come, here is firewood for you.
6.
The firewood did not burn up therein, a miracle of the great sage.
7.
Your religious duty is useless, tend the fire for me.
8.
Tell this to me too, we shall both attend to it.
9.
Having abandoned jealousy and stinginess, these three are my oblations.
10.
Your conduct and practice, very much indeed pleases me.
11.
With all mental corruptions eliminated, there is now no more rebirth."
12.
I will pay homage to you, god, you are the one who makes an end of suffering.
13.
Sit down, O protector, O omniscient one, I will attend upon you.
14.
Having invited the self-enlightened one, I went to the mountain.
15.
Having mixed it with honey, I gave the fruit to the Buddha.
16.
There I gladdened my mind, beholding the leader of the world.
17.
Having sat down in my hermitage, he spoke these verses.

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.
19.
A thousand times he will be a king, a universal monarch.
20.
Food and drink and garments, and a very precious bed.
21.
And this one, always greatly delighted, will be free from illness.
22.
Having been happy everywhere, he will go to human existence.
23.
Having approached the self-enlightened one, he will become a Worthy One."
24.
There is no deficiency in my wealth, this is the fruit of giving fruit.
25.
With all mental corruptions eliminated, there is now no more rebirth."
26.
Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.
27.
The three true knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.
28.
The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."
Thus the Venerable Elder Tissametteyya spoke these verses.
The Life History of the Elder Tissametteyya is first.

The Life History of the Elder Puṇṇaka
And that Buddha, being sick, dwells in the mountain caves.
30.
When the Buddha was attaining final Nibbāna, light arose.
31.
Fierce beasts and lions all, roared at that very moment.
32.
There I saw the self-enlightened one, quenched, unconquered.
33.
Like a flameless ember, quenched, unconquered.
34.
Having made the funeral pyre well-constructed, I cremated the body.
35.
A demon standing in the sky obtained the name at that very moment.
36.
Puṇṇaka by name, may you always be, O sage.
37.
There divine fragrance rains down from the sky.
38.
Whether become a god or a human, I fulfil the thought.
39.
Here too the name Puṇṇaka, the appellation is made known.
40.
Having fully understood all mental corruptions, I dwell without mental corruptions.

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of a small service.

The Life History of the Elder Mettagu
There was my hermitage, created by Vissakamma.

Having dressed in the forenoon, approached me for almsfood.

Having held up the Fortunate One's bowl, I filled it with ghee and oil.
48.
Having raised my joined palms, I generate even more joy.
49.
Whether become a god or a human, I obtain abundant happiness.
50.
Having directed my mind there, I obtain the unshakeable state.
51.
Having come to see me, there will be arahantship.
52.
Having given ghee to me, you will be released from birth.
53.
Whether become a god or a human, you obtain abundant happiness.
54.
For eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, you will delight in the heavenly world.
55.
Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.
56.
Ruler of the four quarters, victorious, lord of the Indian subcontinent.
57.
Even so your wealth will be immeasurable.
58.
Seeking what is wholesome, I approached Bāvari.
59.
Dispelling the darkness of ignorance, you arose, O great sage.
60.
Having heard your Teaching, I have attained the unshakeable state.
61.
In between here I do not directly know, ghee offered by me.
62.
Having understood my mind, arisen, I satisfy all.
63.
Having given just a little ghee, I obtain the immeasurable.
64.
Taking my ghee, will not be a fraction.
65.
That place is not suitable for my rebirth.
66.
Will not be a comparison for my anointed fragrance.
67.
And the unconditioned Nibbāna, this is the fruit of the gift of ghee.

Feeding on the factors of enlightenment today, this is the fruit of the gift of ghee.

The Life History of the Elder Dhotaka
Streams along through the door of Haṃsavatī at that very moment.

There the Buddha Padumuttara, the leader of the world, dwelt.
74.
There sat the Blessed One, fearless like a lion.
75.
Chaḷaṅga by name, thus named was the great sage.
76.
Together with those pupils, I approached the bank of the Ganges.
77.
While I was crossing the Ganges, I thought thus at that very moment.
78.
They vex themselves, their self is grieved.
79.
There is no offering for me, a purifier of the path of destination.
80.
Having had this deed done, I cross over this existence.
81.
Believing, the service done will be extensive for me.
82.
Having made salutation with joined palms on the head, I spoke these words.
83.
For your benefit, O great sage, accept this great bridge.
84.
Having sat down in the community of monks, he spoke these verses.
85.
Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.
(The Benefit of Giving a Bridge)

Even having passed away, one will obtain a state, this is the fruit of the gift of a bridge.
87.
Enemies cannot overcome, this is the fruit of the gift of a bridge.
88.
He will overcome all enemies, this is the fruit of the gift of a bridge.

Connected with meritorious action, there will be no painful feeling.
90.
Having understood his thought, it will arise at that very moment.
91.
Morning and evening they will approach, this is the fruit of the gift of a bridge.

In the sky, just like a human being, there will be an elephant vehicle.

Gotama by name, by clan, the Teacher in the world will be.

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will attain nibbāna, without mental corruptions.'

Having done service there, I have attained the elimination of mental corruptions.

Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.

The Life History of the Elder Upasīva
A hermitage was well made by me, a leaf-hut was well built.
101.
In the watery shallows arise, many lotuses and waterlilies.
102.
Covered with fish and turtles, the small river flows then.
103.
Punnāga trees and mountain punnāga trees, blow forth fragrance around my hermitage.
104.
Sal trees and saḷala trees there, champaka trees in bloom, many.
105.
Asana trees and sweet-scented ones, in bloom in my hermitage.
106.
Covered with bimbī creeper buds, all around for half a yojana.
107.
Many aṅkolaka trees were there, and tālakuṭṭhi trees in bloom;
Many seleyyaka trees were there, in bloom in my hermitage.
108.
All around with that fragrance, my hermitage is pervaded.
109.
Jujubes, marking-nut trees, marmelos trees, and sweet lovi-lovi fruits.
110.
Breadfruit trees and jack trees were there, plantains and jujube fruits.
111.
Citron and breadfruit trees, bearing fruit in my hermitage.
112.
Pits filled with ripe fruit, and wave-leafed figs and glamorous figs.
113.
Many glamorous fig trees, and green itching-leaf plants.
114.
Many flowering trees too, in bloom in my hermitage.
115.
Ālaka and tālaka plants too, are found in my hermitage.

With clear water, cool water, with good landing places, delightful.
117.
Covered with mandālaka flowers, stirred by various odours.
118.
Many lotus pericarps stand with fallen petals.
119.
All around with that fragrance, stirred by various odours.

Favourable to the natural lake, ketaka trees in bloom, many.
121.
Crocodiles and crocodiles too, and turtles are born there.
122.
Shad fish, rainy-season fish, balaja fish, munja fish, red fish.
123.
Pigeons, sun-geese, ospreys and river-dwellers.
124.
Squirrels and ospreys, hawks and many otters.
125.
Female elephants and tilaka trees, live depending on that lake.
126.
Monkeys and kinnaras too, are seen in my hermitage.
127.
And drinking scented water, I dwell in my hermitage.
128.
Fire-worshippers and Radiant ones too, dwell in my hermitage.

Many she-cats were there, owls and poṭṭhasīsaka birds.
130.
Garuḷas and serpents too, dwell in my hermitage.
131.
All bearing water-pitchers, wearing antelope hides as upper garments;
Laden with the weight of matted hair, they dwell in my hermitage.

Content with gain and loss, they dwell in my hermitage.
133.
Supported by their forces, they then go into the sky.
134.
And having become fully ordained by themselves, this would be the fruit of a miracle.

Like elephants, great serpents, fearless like lions.
136.
And some to Uttarakuru, depending on their own strength.

Of all those departing, such ones of radiant power.

Such are your pupils, O Great Hero, of fierce austerity, mine.

Pleased by their own action, disciplined ones have assembled.

Virtuous and prudent, skilled in the boundless states.

Having arranged the time, the great leader approached.

The Fully Self-Enlightened One, having held up his bowl, approached me for alms.

Having prepared a grass mat, I scattered sal flowers upon him.

Having quickly ascended the mountain, I took up aloe wood.

Having placed it on my shoulder, I approached the guide.

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I paid homage to the foremost Buddha.

Having sat down in the midst of the sages, he spoke these verses.

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

Having understood this one's mind, food will arise.

With food and with cloths, he will satisfy the assembly.

Having become one of imperturbable wealth, this man will transmigrate.

A thousand times he will be a king, a universal monarch.

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

Gotama by name, by clan, the Teacher in the world will be.

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will dwell without mental corruptions.'

The Life History of the Elder Nandaka
Seeking the pasada deer, I saw the Self-Become One.

That wise one, desiring seclusion, entered the midst of the forest then.

Having made a well-crafted pavilion, I covered it with lotus flowers.
164.
Having put down my bow right there, I went forth into homelessness.
165.
Having remembered my former action, there I deceased.
166.
There a golden divine mansion arises at will.
167.
Having ascended that vehicle, I go wherever I wish.
168.
All around for a hundred yojanas, a pavilion is held for me.
169.
And lotuses from the sky, raining constantly.
170.
The heat does not scorch me, this is the fruit of the pavilion.
171.
In a pavilion or at the root of a tree, torment is not found in me.
172.
That well-done action of mine, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.
173.
Oh, well done is my action, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

My mental corruptions are completely eliminated, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

And I am an heir in the Good Teaching, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

Having the Teaching as my banner, heir to the Teaching, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

I asked the leader of the world about the path leading to the beyond.

Having heard his Teaching, I have attained the elimination of mental corruptions.

With all mental corruptions eliminated, there is now no more rebirth."

The Life History of the Elder Hemaka
Having made a well-crafted hermitage, he dwelt in a leaf-hut then.

Excelling in his own asceticism, ardent and prudent, the sage.
185.
Versed in the earth and sky, and skilled in portents.

Content with gain and loss, a meditator, delighting in meditative absorption, a sage.
187.
Wishing to help beings cross over, he pervaded with compassion then.
188.
Having gone even to a thousand world-circles, the sage exhorts.
189.
The Conqueror was not seen by me before, nor heard of from anyone.
190.
Versed in the earth and sky, skilled in the constellations and their courses.
191.
Whether standing or seated, I remember constantly.
192.
For one recollecting the Buddha, rapture arises in me at that very moment.
193.
Even when he had arrived, I did not know, 'This is the Buddha, the great sage.'

He revealed himself, 'I am the Buddha in the world with its gods'.

Having gladdened my own mind, I spoke these words.

You too, all-seeing one, sit down upon the jewelled seat.'

I gave it, created by supernormal power, to the sage Piyadassī.

A pot-sized rose-apple fruit, I gave at that very moment.

Then having gladdened my mind, I paid respect to the Teacher.

Seated on a jewelled seat, spoke these verses.

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

And seventy-five times, he will be a universal monarch.

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

And made of coral, he will obtain one made of jewels.

Many divans surrounded him then.

Having understood this one's mind, they will arise at that very moment.

Mātaṅgas with golden trappings, clothed in golden adornments.

They will attend upon me, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.

Thoroughbreds by birth, Sindh horses with swift conveyance.

They too will attend upon me, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.

With panther skins and also tiger skins, armoured with raised banners.
212.
They will constantly surround me, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.
213.
They will produce calves, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.

Adorned with variegated garments and ornaments, wearing jewelled earrings.

They will constantly surround me, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.
216.
Having dispelled the darkness of ignorance, the Buddha will arise in the world.

Having pleased the Teacher, he will delight in the Dispensation.

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will attain nibbāna, without mental corruptions.'

Aspiring to the highest good, I dwell in the Dispensation.

The Life History of the Elder Todeyya
A hero endowed with valour, dwelt in the midst of the city then.

The Otāras and Tuṇḍikas, they destroyed the country then.

Both soldiers and army members, he subdued the enemy then.

Archers and fierce warriors, all gathered together then.
228.
Heroes victorious in battle, all gathered together then.
229.
Fierce hunters victorious in battle, all gathered together then.
230.
With golden trappings and ornaments, all gathered together then.

Warriors by livelihood, their work done, all gathered together then.
232.
Gladdening them with these, all gathered together then.

Pounding and throwing down, all gathered together then.
234.
Sixty thousand living beings, I impaled on stakes then.
235.
For one being tormented in hell, when will there be an end?'"

I do not sleep by day and night, they threaten me with a stake.

They are not able to sustain me, they torment me always.

What if I should go forth, I would purify the path to my destination.

With golden trappings, the great elephants, clothed in golden caparisons.

In a state frequenting the battle-field, without longing, having abandoned, I;
Scorched by my own action, went forth into homelessness.

Of good breed by birth, Sindh horses, swift vehicles.

Having struck them all, I went forth into homelessness.

With leopard skins and also tiger skins, armoured with raised banners;
Having renounced all those, I went forth into homelessness.

Having abandoned even those, I went forth into homelessness.

Adorned with variegated garments and ornaments, wearing jewelled earrings.

Having left them while they were crying, I went forth into homelessness.

Having abandoned that kingdom, I went forth into homelessness.

On the bank of the Bhāgīrathī river, I built a hermitage.

Putting forth strenuous energy, resolute, I dwell in a hermitage.

No fear is found in me, I did not see fear and dread.

Shining with the light of knowledge, arose in the world at that very moment.

When the Buddha, the foremost one, had arisen, he announced it to me then.

He helps all the populace to cross over, he will help him too to cross over.

Thinking 'Buddha, Buddha,' I set the hermitage in order.

Having bowed down to the hermitage, I departed from the forest.

Seeking the god of gods, I approached the guide.

When the sal trees are in bloom, the fragrance blows forth with the wind.

Accomplished with the three characteristics, a brahmin named Bāvarī.

The Life History of the Elder Jatukaṇṇi
Endowed with the types of sensual pleasure, I enjoyed myself then.

There with dancing and singing, I enjoyed myself then.

All the women dancing, they captivate my mind.

Jumpers and sorrow-meditators, they surround me always.

Performers and dramatists too, surround me always.

Wrestlers and all those, they surround me always.

I do not know night and day, like Indra among the company of deities.

They constantly approach my house, begging for alms.

Increasing my merit, they come to my house.

Those with three staves, single top-knotted ones, come to my house.

These bearers of muddy dirt, come to my house.
287.
Austere ascetics and forest dwellers come to my house.
288.
Savaras and Yonakas, they come to my house.
289.
And those from Ārāvacīna country, come to my house.

Householders and servants too, come to my house.
291.
Isindas and Makkalas too, they come to my house.

Khuddakas and Suddakas too, they come to my house.

From Suraṭṭha and Aparanta, they come to my house.

The Vajjians and Aṅgas, all of them come to my house.

Smiths and potters come to my house.

And lead workers, all of them come to my house.

Washermen and tailors, come to my house.

Cooks and curry-keepers, come to my house.

Elephant riders, elephant keepers, come to my house.

With the sevenfold jewel, I fulfil what is lacking.

Having understood their minds, I satisfied them with jewels.

While conches were being blown, I rejoiced in my own home.

He with a hundred thousand masters, who had eliminated the mental corruptions.

Illuminating all directions, he shines like a lamp post.

Radiance radiates from him, like the risen sun.

In the inner houses, abundant light was at that very moment.

"Without doubt the Supreme Buddha has come to this street."

With a hundred-part musical instrument, I attended on the foremost Buddha.

This man will exercise sovereign power over the four continents.

Having undertaken and proceeding, he will train the assembly.

They will constantly play for me, this is the fruit of attendance.

Sixty-four times as lord of the gods, he will exercise divine kingship.

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

Gotama by name, by clan, the Teacher in the world will be.

Having become one of complete enjoyment, he will go to human existence.

Seeking the highest good, he will wander this earth.

He will delight in the Dispensation of the Blessed One Gotama.'

Having burnt up the defilements, this one will become a Worthy One.'

Fearless I dwell today, in the Sakyan son's Dispensation.

I do not see rebirth for me, this is the fruit of attendance.

Uddālaka trees and trumpet-flower trees, they adorn my hermitage.

Blowing towards with their fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

Jujubes, marking-nut trees, marmelos trees - many fruits in the hermitage.

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

Pythons and boa constrictors too, they adorn my hermitage.

All of them eating little food, they adorn my hermitage.

By the power of all, it is brought by itself.

All these are meditators, seekers of the highest good.

All sky-dwellers, they dwell in the hermitage then.

Having paid respect to one another, they depart facing the directions.

Dispelling the darkness of ignorance, the Conqueror arose at that very moment.

He praised to me the self-enlightened, the supreme leader born of the water.

Having gone quickly to the self-enlightened one, attend on him, dear sir.

Having set in order the hermitage, I departed from the forest then.

Having stayed for one night, I approached the guide.

Making known the four truths, he taught the Deathless state.

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I placed it upon the Buddha.

The ultimate goal and the support, the island, O best of bipeds.
