The Chapter on Metteyya

1.

The Life History of the Elder Tissametteyya

1.

"In dependence on the mountain peak, an ascetic named Sobhita;

Having eaten fallen fruit, dwells in the mountain caves.

2.

"Having brought firewood, I kindled the fire then;

Seeking the highest good, for rebirth in the Brahma world.

3.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Wishing to uplift me, he came to my presence.

4.

"What are you doing, O greatly meritorious one? Give me firewood;

I will tend the fire, from that there will be purity for me."

5.

"You are auspicious among humans, O deity, you understand;

You tend the fire, come, here is firewood for you.

6.

"Then, having taken firewood, the Conqueror kindled the fire;

The firewood did not burn up therein, a miracle of the great sage.

7.

"Your fire does not blaze, no oblation is found in you;

Your religious duty is useless, tend the fire for me.

8.

"What kind is that fire, O great hero, which is spoken of by you;

Tell this to me too, we shall both attend to it.

9.

"For the cessation of states that are causes, and for the calming of defilements;

Having abandoned jealousy and stinginess, these three are my oblations.

10.

"What kind are you, O great hero, what is your clan, dear sir;

Your conduct and practice, very much indeed pleases me.

11.

"Born in a family of the warrior caste, gone to the perfection of direct knowledge;

With all mental corruptions eliminated, there is now no more rebirth."

12.

"If you are the Buddha, the Omniscient One, the light-bringer, the dispeller of darkness;

I will pay homage to you, god, you are the one who makes an end of suffering.

13.

"Having spread out the cheetah hide, I gave a sitting cloth;

Sit down, O protector, O omniscient one, I will attend upon you.

14.

"The Blessed One sat down there, on the well-spread cheetah hide;

Having invited the self-enlightened one, I went to the mountain.

15.

"Having filled a basket-load, I brought tinduka fruit;

Having mixed it with honey, I gave the fruit to the Buddha.

16.

"While I was gazing, the Conqueror then consumed;

There I gladdened my mind, beholding the leader of the world.

17.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Having sat down in my hermitage, he spoke these verses.

18.

"'He who satisfied me with fruit, devoted, with his own hands;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

19.

"'Twenty-five times, he will exercise divine kingship;

A thousand times he will be a king, a universal monarch.

20.

"'Having understood his thought, for one endowed with former deeds;

Food and drink and garments, and a very precious bed.

21.

"Connected with meritorious action, they will be reborn at that very moment;

And this one, always greatly delighted, will be free from illness.

22.

"Whatever realm of rebirth he arises in, whether divinity or human;

Having been happy everywhere, he will go to human existence.

23.

"A reciter, a bearer of sacred texts, one who has gone beyond the three Vedas;

Having approached the self-enlightened one, he will become a Worthy One."

24.

"Since I remember myself, since I have attained discretion;

There is no deficiency in my wealth, this is the fruit of giving fruit.

25.

"Having attained the excellent teaching, I abolished lust and hate;

With all mental corruptions eliminated, there is now no more rebirth."

26.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, all existences have been uprooted;

Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.

27.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, my coming to the Buddha's presence;

The three true knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

28.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tissametteyya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Tissametteyya is first.

The Life History of the Elder Puṇṇaka

29.

"In dependence on the mountain peak, the Self-become One, unconquered;

And that Buddha, being sick, dwells in the mountain caves.

30.

"In the vicinity of my hermitage, great joy arose at that very moment;

When the Buddha was attaining final Nibbāna, light arose.

31.

"As far as in the jungle thicket, bears, wolves and hyenas;

Fierce beasts and lions all, roared at that very moment.

32.

"Having seen that celestial event, I went to the cave;

There I saw the self-enlightened one, quenched, unconquered.

33.

Like a fully blossomed king of sal trees, like the risen sun;

Like a flameless ember, quenched, unconquered.

34.

"Having filled it with grass and wood, the funeral pyre there I myself;

Having made the funeral pyre well-constructed, I cremated the body.

35.

"Having burnt the body, I sprinkled it with fragrant water;

A demon standing in the sky obtained the name at that very moment.

36.

"Whatever function was fulfilled by you, of the self-born great sage;

Puṇṇaka by name, may you always be, O sage.

37.

"Having fallen away from that class of beings, I came to the heavenly world;

There divine fragrance rains down from the sky.

38.

"There too my appellation was Puṇṇaka then;

Whether become a god or a human, I fulfil the thought.

39.

"This is my last, the final existence goes on;

Here too the name Puṇṇaka, the appellation is made known.

40.

"Having pleased the self-enlightened, Gotama, the bull of the Sakyans;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, I dwell without mental corruptions.

41.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of a small service.

42.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

43.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

44.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Puṇṇaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Puṇṇaka is second.

The Life History of the Elder Mettagu

45.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Asoka;

There was my hermitage, created by Vissakamma.

46.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Sumedha, the foremost compassionate sage;

Having dressed in the forenoon, approached me for almsfood.

47.

"The great hero who had arrived, the wise one, the leader of the world;

Having held up the Fortunate One's bowl, I filled it with ghee and oil.

48.

"Having given to the foremost Buddha, the wise one, the leader of the world;

Having raised my joined palms, I generate even more joy.

49.

"By this gift of ghee, and by volition and aspirations;

Whether become a god or a human, I obtain abundant happiness.

50.

"Having avoided the nether world, I wander in the round of rebirths from existence to existence;

Having directed my mind there, I obtain the unshakeable state.

51.

"It is a gain for you, it is well-gained for you, that you saw me, brahmin;

Having come to see me, there will be arahantship.

52.

"Be confident, do not fear, having attained great fame;

Having given ghee to me, you will be released from birth.

53.

"By this gift of ghee, and by volition and aspirations;

Whether become a god or a human, you obtain abundant happiness.

54.

"By this gift of ghee, and by having a mind of friendliness;

For eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, you will delight in the heavenly world.

55.

"And thirty-eight times you will be a king of gods;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

56.

"And fifty-one times you will be a wheel-turning monarch;

Ruler of the four quarters, victorious, lord of the Indian subcontinent.

57.

"Unshakeable like the great ocean, hard to bear like the earth;

Even so your wealth will be immeasurable.

58.

"Sixty million in gold, having given up, I went forth;

Seeking what is wholesome, I approached Bāvari.

59.

"There I studied the sacred texts, the characteristic named the six-factored;

Dispelling the darkness of ignorance, you arose, O great sage.

60.

"Desiring to see you, I have come, O great sage;

Having heard your Teaching, I have attained the unshakeable state.

61.

"In thirty thousand cosmic cycles, I gave ghee to the Buddha;

In between here I do not directly know, ghee offered by me.

62.

"Having understood my thought, there arises whatever is wished for;

Having understood my mind, arisen, I satisfy all.

63.

"Oh, the Buddhas! Oh, the Teaching! Oh, the accomplishment of our Teacher!

Having given just a little ghee, I obtain the immeasurable.

64.

"The water in the great ocean, as far as the side of Neru;

Taking my ghee, will not be a fraction.

65.

"As far as the world-circle, being made from a heap;

That place is not suitable for my rebirth.

66.

"The Himalaya, king of mountains, and the noble rock;

Will not be a comparison for my anointed fragrance.

67.

"Cloth and odour and ghee, and other things pertaining to the present life;

And the unconditioned Nibbāna, this is the fruit of the gift of ghee.

68.

"Resting on the establishment of mindfulness, with concentration and meditative absorption as resort;

Feeding on the factors of enlightenment today, this is the fruit of the gift of ghee.

69.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

70.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

71.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Mettagū spoke these verses.

Thus he spoke.

The Life History of the Elder Mettagū is third.

The Life History of the Elder Dhotaka

72.

"The Ganges, named Bhāgīrathī, flowing forth from the Himalayas;

Streams along through the door of Haṃsavatī at that very moment.

73.

"The park named Sobhita, well built on the bank of the Ganges;

There the Buddha Padumuttara, the leader of the world, dwelt.

74.

"Just as Inda is honoured by the deities, so by humans;

There sat the Blessed One, fearless like a lion.

75.

"In the city of Haṃsavatī, I dwelt as a brahmin;

Chaḷaṅga by name, thus named was the great sage.

76.

"Eighteen hundred pupils surrounded me then;

Together with those pupils, I approached the bank of the Ganges.

77.

"There I saw ascetics, not deceitful, cleansed of evil;

While I was crossing the Ganges, I thought thus at that very moment.

78.

"Morning and evening they cross over, the sons of the Buddha, of great fame;

They vex themselves, their self is grieved.

79.

"Of the world with its gods, the Buddha is called the foremost;

There is no offering for me, a purifier of the path of destination.

80.

"What if I should have a bridge built over the Ganges for the Buddha, the foremost;

Having had this deed done, I cross over this existence.

81.

"Having given a hundred thousand, I had a bridge built;

Believing, the service done will be extensive for me.

82.

"Having had that bridge built, I approached the leader of the world;

Having made salutation with joined palms on the head, I spoke these words.

83.

"'Having given a hundred thousand as expenditure, it was caused to be made by me;

For your benefit, O great sage, accept this great bridge.

84.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Having sat down in the community of monks, he spoke these verses.

85.

"'He who made a bridge for me, devoted, with his own hands;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

(The Benefit of Giving a Bridge)

86.

"Whether fallen from a cleft or from a mountain, or from a tree;

Even having passed away, one will obtain a state, this is the fruit of the gift of a bridge.

87.

"Like the wind against a banyan tree with grown roots and continuous spread,

Enemies cannot overcome, this is the fruit of the gift of a bridge.

88.

"'Thieves do not overpower him, warriors do not despise him;

He will overcome all enemies, this is the fruit of the gift of a bridge.

89.

"One gone to the open air, peaceful, scorched by the harsh heat of the sun;

Connected with meritorious action, there will be no painful feeling.

90.

"'In the heavenly world or among human beings, an elephant vehicle well-fashioned;

Having understood his thought, it will arise at that very moment.

91.

"'A thousand horses swift as the wind, Sindh horses with rapid conveyance;

Morning and evening they will approach, this is the fruit of the gift of a bridge.

92.

"'Having come to human existence, this one will be happy;

In the sky, just like a human being, there will be an elephant vehicle.

93.

"In a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, of the Okkāka clan origin;

Gotama by name, by clan, the Teacher in the world will be.

94.

"'His heir in the teachings, legitimate, created by the Teaching;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will attain nibbāna, without mental corruptions.'

95.

"Oh, well done is my action, for the one named the best of lotuses;

Having done service there, I have attained the elimination of mental corruptions.

96.

"I am resolute in striving, at peace, without clinging;

Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.

97.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

98.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

99.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Dhotaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Dhotaka is fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Upasīva

100.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Anoma;

A hermitage was well made by me, a leaf-hut was well built.

101.

"And a river flows there, with good fords, delightful;

In the watery shallows arise, many lotuses and waterlilies.

102.

"Shad fish, rainy-season fish, balaja fish, munja fish, red fish;

Covered with fish and turtles, the small river flows then.

103.

"Timira trees in bloom there, asoka trees and small mālaka trees;

Punnāga trees and mountain punnāga trees, blow forth fragrance around my hermitage.

104.

"Kuṭaja trees in bloom there, and groves of tiṇasūla jasmine;

Sal trees and saḷala trees there, champaka trees in bloom, many.

105.

"Arjuna trees and atimutta trees, and mahānāma trees in bloom;

Asana trees and sweet-scented ones, in bloom in my hermitage.

106.

Uddālaka trees and trumpet-flower trees, jasmine and piyaṅgu plants;

Covered with bimbī creeper buds, all around for half a yojana.

107.

"Mātaggārā trees and sattali trees, trumpet-flower trees and sinduvāraka trees;

Many aṅkolaka trees were there, and tālakuṭṭhi trees in bloom;

Many seleyyaka trees were there, in bloom in my hermitage.

108.

"With these flowers blooming, many trees shine;

All around with that fragrance, my hermitage is pervaded.

109.

Yellow myrobalans, emblic myrobalans, mangoes, rose-apples, beleric myrobalans;

Jujubes, marking-nut trees, marmelos trees, and sweet lovi-lovi fruits.

110.

"Tinduka trees and piyāla trees, madhuka trees and kasumāra trees;

Breadfruit trees and jack trees were there, plantains and jujube fruits.

111.

"Many hog-plum trees were there, and creeper fruits;

Citron and breadfruit trees, bearing fruit in my hermitage.

112.

Āḷaka plants and sage's beans, and from there many joyful fruits;

Pits filled with ripe fruit, and wave-leafed figs and glamorous figs.

113.

"Long pepper and pepper trees there, banyan trees and wood-apple trees;

Many glamorous fig trees, and green itching-leaf plants.

114.

"These and many others, bearing fruit in my hermitage;

Many flowering trees too, in bloom in my hermitage.

115.

"Yams and kaḷamba plants, and bilālī and buttermilk plants;

Ālaka and tālaka plants too, are found in my hermitage.

116.

"Not far from my hermitage, there was a great natural lake;

With clear water, cool water, with good landing places, delightful.

117.

Many lotuses and waterlilies there, combined with white lotuses;

Covered with mandālaka flowers, stirred by various odours.

118.

"The lotuses take embryo, others bloom with stamens;

Many lotus pericarps stand with fallen petals.

119.

"Honey flows from the lotus roots, milk and ghee from the tubers;

All around with that fragrance, stirred by various odours.

120.

"White water lilies and mango-scented, nayitā trees appear, many;

Favourable to the natural lake, ketaka trees in bloom, many.

121.

"Fully bloomed bandhujīvaka flowers and white water lilies, fragrant ones;

Crocodiles and crocodiles too, and turtles are born there.

122.

"Pythons and boa constrictors, there in the natural lake are many;

Shad fish, rainy-season fish, balaja fish, munja fish, red fish.

123.

"Covered with fish and turtles, and also with water-birds;

Pigeons, sun-geese, ospreys and river-dwellers.

124.

"Lapwings and ruddy geese, lorises and pheasants;

Squirrels and ospreys, hawks and many otters.

125.

"Herons and young parrots, flying foxes and many yaks;

Female elephants and tilaka trees, live depending on that lake.

126.

"Lions, tigers and panthers, bears, wolves and hyenas;

Monkeys and kinnaras too, are seen in my hermitage.

127.

"Smelling those odours, eating fruits,

And drinking scented water, I dwell in my hermitage.

128.

"Antelopes and boars, spotted deer and small creatures;

Fire-worshippers and Radiant ones too, dwell in my hermitage.

129.

"Swans, herons, and peacocks, myna-birds and also cuckoos;

Many she-cats were there, owls and poṭṭhasīsaka birds.

130.

"Goblins and titans too, kumbhaṇḍas and many demons;

Garuḷas and serpents too, dwell in my hermitage.

131.

"The sages of great might, with peaceful minds, concentrated;

All bearing water-pitchers, wearing antelope hides as upper garments;

Laden with the weight of matted hair, they dwell in my hermitage.

132.

"Looking only a yoke's length ahead, prudent, of peaceful conduct;

Content with gain and loss, they dwell in my hermitage.

133.

Shaking their bark garments, beating their cheetah-skin coverings;

Supported by their forces, they then go into the sky.

134.

"They do not bring water, nor firewood for the fire;

And having become fully ordained by themselves, this would be the fruit of a miracle.

135.

Having taken an iron bowl, they dwell in the midst of the forest;

Like elephants, great serpents, fearless like lions.

136.

"Some go to Aparagoyāna, some to Pubbavideha;

And some to Uttarakuru, depending on their own strength.

137.

"Then having brought almsfood, they consume it together;

Of all those departing, such ones of radiant power.

138.

"By the sound of antelope hides, the forest resounds then;

Such are your pupils, O Great Hero, of fierce austerity, mine.

139.

"Surrounded by them, I dwell in my hermitage;

Pleased by their own action, disciplined ones have assembled.

140.

"These pleased me, desiring their own actions;

Virtuous and prudent, skilled in the boundless states.

141.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Having arranged the time, the great leader approached.

142.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One, having approached, ardent and prudent, the sage;

The Fully Self-Enlightened One, having held up his bowl, approached me for alms.

143.

"The great hero who had arrived, the supreme leader born of the water;

Having prepared a grass mat, I scattered sal flowers upon him.

144.

"Having seated the self-enlightened one, joyful, with an agitated mind;

Having quickly ascended the mountain, I took up aloe wood.

145.

Having taken a pot-sized jackfruit, with divine fragrance;

Having placed it on my shoulder, I approached the guide.

146.

Having given fruit to the Buddha, I anointed him with aloe wood;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I paid homage to the foremost Buddha.

147.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Having sat down in the midst of the sages, he spoke these verses.

148.

"He who gave me fruit and aloe wood, and gave me a seat;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

149.

"'Whether in a village or in the wilderness, on mountain slopes or in caves;

Having understood this one's mind, food will arise.

150.

"In the heavenly world or among human beings, this man reborn;

With food and with cloths, he will satisfy the assembly.

151.

"Whatever realm of rebirth he arises in, whether divinity or human;

Having become one of imperturbable wealth, this man will transmigrate.

152.

"'For thirty thousand cosmic cycles, he will delight in the heavenly world;

A thousand times he will be a king, a universal monarch.

153.

"'Seventy-one times, he will exercise divine kingship;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

154.

"In a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, of the Okkāka clan origin;

Gotama by name, by clan, the Teacher in the world will be.

155.

"'His heir in the teachings, legitimate, created by the Teaching;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will dwell without mental corruptions.'

156.

"It is a gain for me, it is well-gained for me, that I saw the leader;

The three true knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

157.

"Whether in a village or in the wilderness, on mountain slopes or in caves;

Having understood my thought, food is always there for me.

158.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

159.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

160.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Upasīva spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Upasīva is fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Nandaka

161.

"Formerly I was a deer hunter, in the forest grove;

Seeking the pasada deer, I saw the Self-Become One.

162.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Anuruddha, self-become, unconquered;

That wise one, desiring seclusion, entered the midst of the forest then.

163.

"Having taken four poles, I set them up in four places;

Having made a well-crafted pavilion, I covered it with lotus flowers.

164.

"Having covered the pavilion, I paid respect to the Self-Become One;

Having put down my bow right there, I went forth into homelessness.

165.

"Not long after I had gone forth, illness arose in me;

Having remembered my former action, there I deceased.

166.

"Connected with former action, I went to the Tusita heaven;

There a golden divine mansion arises at will.

167.

"Having mounted a divine vehicle drawn by horses, yoked with a thousand;

Having ascended that vehicle, I go wherever I wish.

168.

"Then, as I was being led forth, having become a god, being mindful;

All around for a hundred yojanas, a pavilion is held for me.

169.

"I share the same bed, on a flower-strewn rug uncovered;

And lotuses from the sky, raining constantly.

170.

"When the mirage is shimmering, and the sun's heat is scorching;

The heat does not scorch me, this is the fruit of the pavilion.

171.

"Having transcended the unfortunate realm, the realms of misery are closed to me;

In a pavilion or at the root of a tree, torment is not found in me.

172.

"Having determined the perception of the earth, I cross the salt water;

That well-done action of mine, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

173.

"Having made a path where there was no path, I go through the sky-path;

Oh, well done is my action, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

174.

"I know past lives, the divine eye has been purified;

My mental corruptions are completely eliminated, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

175.

"Previous birth is given up, I am a legitimate son of the Buddha;

And I am an heir in the Good Teaching, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

176.

"I have pleased the Fortunate One, Gotama, the bull of the Sakyans;

Having the Teaching as my banner, heir to the Teaching, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

177.

"Having attended on the self-enlightened, Gotama, the bull of the Sakyans;

I asked the leader of the world about the path leading to the beyond.

178.

"Requested, the Buddha spoke, the profound, subtle state;

Having heard his Teaching, I have attained the elimination of mental corruptions.

179.

"Oh, well done is my action, I am released from birth;

With all mental corruptions eliminated, there is now no more rebirth."

180.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

181.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

182.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Nandaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Nandaka is the sixth.

7.

The Life History of the Elder Hemaka

183.

"In dependence on the mountain peak, an ascetic named Anoma;

Having made a well-crafted hermitage, he dwelt in a leaf-hut then.

184.

"His ascetic practice is accomplished, having attained success in his own strength;

Excelling in his own asceticism, ardent and prudent, the sage.

185.

"Confident in his own doctrine, and skilled in the doctrines of others;

Versed in the earth and sky, and skilled in portents.

186.

"Free from sorrow, without killing of animals, eating little food, not covetous;

Content with gain and loss, a meditator, delighting in meditative absorption, a sage.

187.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Piyadassī, the foremost compassionate sage;

Wishing to help beings cross over, he pervaded with compassion then.

188.

"Having seen people capable of being enlightened, Piyadassī, the great sage;

Having gone even to a thousand world-circles, the sage exhorts.

189.

"Wishing to uplift me, he came to my hermitage;

The Conqueror was not seen by me before, nor heard of from anyone.

190.

"Omens, dreams, and characteristics are well-proclaimed by me;

Versed in the earth and sky, skilled in the constellations and their courses.

191.

"Having heard of the Buddha, I gladdened my mind there;

Whether standing or seated, I remember constantly.

192.

"While I was thus remembering, the Blessed One too recollected;

For one recollecting the Buddha, rapture arises in me at that very moment.

193.

"And having come again in time, the great sage approached me;

Even when he had arrived, I did not know, 'This is the Buddha, the great sage.'

194.

"Compassionate and merciful, Piyadassī, the great sage;

He revealed himself, 'I am the Buddha in the world with its gods'.

"Having recognised the self-enlightened, Piyadassin, the great sage;

Having gladdened my own mind, I spoke these words.

"'Others sit down on chairs and divans, on sofas;

You too, all-seeing one, sit down upon the jewelled seat.'

"Having created a chair made of all jewels at that very moment;

I gave it, created by supernormal power, to the sage Piyadassī.

198.

"And to one sitting on a jewelled small chair, created by supernormal power;

A pot-sized rose-apple fruit, I gave at that very moment.

"Having generated my laughter, the great sage consumed it;

Then having gladdened my mind, I paid respect to the Teacher.

"The Blessed One Piyadassī, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Seated on a jewelled seat, spoke these verses.

"He who gave me a chair made of jewels, and the Deathless fruit;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

"'For seventy-seven cosmic cycles, he will delight in the heavenly world;

And seventy-five times, he will be a universal monarch.

203.

"'Thirty-two times as lord of the gods, he will exercise divine kingship;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

204.

"'Made of gold, made of silver, a divan well made, abundant;

And made of coral, he will obtain one made of jewels.

205.

"Even as the human walked, endowed with meritorious deeds;

Many divans surrounded him then.

206.

"Pinnacle chambers and mansions, and a very precious bed;

Having understood this one's mind, they will arise at that very moment.

207.

"Sixty thousand elephants, adorned with all ornaments;

Mātaṅgas with golden trappings, clothed in golden adornments.

208.

"Mounted by village headmen, with spears and goads in hand;

They will attend upon me, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.

209.

"Sixty thousand horses, adorned with all ornaments;

Thoroughbreds by birth, Sindh horses with swift conveyance.

210.

"Mounted by village headmen, bearing short swords and bows;

They too will attend upon me, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.

211.

"Sixty thousand chariots, adorned with all ornaments;

With panther skins and also tiger skins, armoured with raised banners.

212.

"Mounted by village headmen, with bows in hand, wearing armour;

They will constantly surround me, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.

213.

"Sixty thousand cows, milch cows with bulls and leading bulls;

They will produce calves, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.

214.

"Sixteen thousand women, adorned with all ornaments;

Adorned with variegated garments and ornaments, wearing jewelled earrings.

215.

'With long eyelashes, cheerful, with good perception, slender-waisted;

They will constantly surround me, this is the fruit of a jewelled chair.

216.

"In eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, the one with vision named Gotama;

Having dispelled the darkness of ignorance, the Buddha will arise in the world.

217.

"'Having come to see him, he will go forth without possessions;

Having pleased the Teacher, he will delight in the Dispensation.

218.

"'Having heard his teaching, he will destroy the defilements;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will attain nibbāna, without mental corruptions.'

219.

"Energy is my beast of burden, carrying me to freedom from bondage;

Aspiring to the highest good, I dwell in the Dispensation.

220.

"This is my last, the final existence goes on;

All mental corruptions are completely eliminated, there is now no more rebirth.

221.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

222.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

223.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Hemaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Hemaka is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Todeyya

"A king named Ajitañjaya, in the excellent city of Ketumatī;

A hero endowed with valour, dwelt in the midst of the city then.

225.

"When that king was heedless, forest dwellers arose;

The Otāras and Tuṇḍikas, they destroyed the country then.

226.

"When the borderland was agitated, quickly the tamer of lords convoked;

Both soldiers and army members, he subdued the enemy then.

227.

"Elephant riders, royal bodyguards, heroes and leather-clad warriors;

Archers and fierce warriors, all gathered together then.

228.

"Cooks and barbers, bath attendants and garland-makers;

Heroes victorious in battle, all gathered together then.

229.

"Men with swords in hand, and bowmen wearing armour;

Fierce hunters victorious in battle, all gathered together then.

230.

"Mātaṅgas erupted in three ways, tuskers sixty years old;

With golden trappings and ornaments, all gathered together then.

231.

"Patient with cold and heat, and with the carrying of dung;

Warriors by livelihood, their work done, all gathered together then.

232.

"The sound of conches, the sound of drums, and also the sound of the season;

Gladdening them with these, all gathered together then.

233.

And with tridents, lances and spells;

Pounding and throwing down, all gathered together then.

234.

"Having observed what indeed, the king Ajitañjaya with his army;

Sixty thousand living beings, I impaled on stakes then.

235.

"They made a human sound, 'Oh, the king is unrighteous;

For one being tormented in hell, when will there be an end?'"

236.

"Sharing the same bed, I see then in hell;

I do not sleep by day and night, they threaten me with a stake.

237.

"What use is negligence, kingship, vehicle and power;

They are not able to sustain me, they torment me always.

238.

"What use are sons and wife to me, and the entire kingdom;

What if I should go forth, I would purify the path to my destination.

239.

"Sixty thousand elephants, adorned with all ornaments;

With golden trappings, the great elephants, clothed in golden caparisons.

240.

"Mounted by village headmen, with spears and goads in hand;

In a state frequenting the battle-field, without longing, having abandoned, I;

Scorched by my own action, went forth into homelessness.

241.

"Sixty thousand horses, adorned with all ornaments;

Of good breed by birth, Sindh horses, swift vehicles.

242.

"Mounted by village headmen, with bows in hand, wearing armour;

Having struck them all, I went forth into homelessness.

243.

"Sixty thousand chariots, adorned with all ornaments;

With leopard skins and also tiger skins, armoured with raised banners;

Having renounced all those, I went forth into homelessness.

244.

"Sixty thousand cows, all with bronze milk pails;

Having abandoned even those, I went forth into homelessness.

245.

"Sixty thousand women, adorned with all ornaments;

Adorned with variegated garments and ornaments, wearing jewelled earrings.

246.

'With long eyelashes, cheerful, with good perception, slender-waisted;

Having left them while they were crying, I went forth into homelessness.

247.

"Sixty thousand villages, complete in every respect;

Having abandoned that kingdom, I went forth into homelessness.

248.

"Having gone out from the city, I approached the Himalayas;

On the bank of the Bhāgīrathī river, I built a hermitage.

249.

"Having made a leaf-hut, I made a fire room;

Putting forth strenuous energy, resolute, I dwell in a hermitage.

250.

"In a pavilion or at the root of a tree, or in an empty house, meditating;

No fear is found in me, I did not see fear and dread.

251.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Sumedha, the foremost compassionate sage;

Shining with the light of knowledge, arose in the world at that very moment.

252.

"In the vicinity of my hermitage, there was a demon of great supernormal power;

When the Buddha, the foremost one, had arisen, he announced it to me then.

253.

"A Buddha has arisen in the world, the wise one named Sumedha, the one with vision;

He helps all the populace to cross over, he will help him too to cross over.

254.

"Having heard the word of the demon, I was agitated at that very moment;

Thinking 'Buddha, Buddha,' I set the hermitage in order.

255.

"Having abandoned the firewood, having set in order the rug;

Having bowed down to the hermitage, I departed from the forest.

256.

"Then, having taken sandalwood, from village to village, from town to town;

Seeking the god of gods, I approached the guide.

257.

"The Blessed One at that time, the wise one, the leader of the world;

Making known the four truths, awakens many people.

258.

"Having raised my joined palms, having placed sandalwood upon my head;

Having paid respect to the self-enlightened, I spoke these verses.

259.

"When the jasmine is in bloom, it wafts its fragrance nearby;

You, O hero, with the fragrance of your virtues, diffuse in all directions.

260.

"Among champaka trees and ironwood trees, atimuttaka and ketaka flowers;

When the sal trees are in bloom, the fragrance blows forth with the wind.

261.

"Having heard your odour, from the Himalayas I came here;

I venerate you, O great hero, eldest of the world, of great fame."

262.

"I anointed with excellent sandalwood the wise one, the leader of the world;

Having gladdened my own mind, I stood silent at that very moment.

263.

"The Blessed One named Sumedha, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Having sat down in the community of monks, he spoke these verses.

264.

"'He who praised my virtues, and offered sandalwood;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

265.

"'One whose words are to be heeded, lofty, upright, majestic;

For twenty-five cosmic cycles, he will be radiant.

266.

"'For twenty-six hundred cosmic cycles, he will delight in the heavenly world;

A thousand times he will be a king, a universal monarch.

267.

"'Thirty-three times as lord of the gods, he will exercise divine kingship;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

268.

"Having passed away from there, this human being will go to human existence;

Connected with meritorious action, he will become a kinsman of Brahma.

269.

"A reciter, a bearer of sacred texts, one who has gone beyond the three Vedas;

Accomplished with the three characteristics, a brahmin named Bāvarī.

270.

"'Having become his pupil, he will be one gone beyond the sacred texts;

Having approached the self-enlightened, Gotama, the bull of the Sakyans.

271.

"'Having asked subtle questions, having developed the straight path;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will dwell without mental corruptions.'

272.

"The threefold fire has been quenched by me, all existences have been uprooted;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, I dwell without mental corruptions.

273.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

274.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

275.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Todeyya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Todeyya is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Jatukaṇṇi

"In the city of Haṃsavatī, I was a merchant's son;

Endowed with the types of sensual pleasure, I enjoyed myself then.

"Then having ascended the mansion, enjoying great wealth;

There with dancing and singing, I enjoyed myself then.

278.

"Musical instruments were played for me, accompanied by cymbals;

All the women dancing, they captivate my mind.

279.

"Cloth-wearers, jewel-wearers, grove-dwellers, those in the middle;

Jumpers and sorrow-meditators, they surround me always.

280.

"Vetāḷa performers and pot-drummers, dancers and many actors;

Performers and dramatists too, surround me always.

281.

"Barbers, bath attendants, chefs, garland-makers, good lay followers;

Wrestlers and all those, they surround me always.

282.

"While these were playing, trained and skilled in archery;

I do not know night and day, like Indra among the company of deities.

283.

"All travellers and wayfarers, beggars and many wretched ones;

They constantly approach my house, begging for alms.

284.

"Ascetics and brahmins, unsurpassed fields of merit;

Increasing my merit, they come to my house.

285.

"Cloth-wearers, quail-like ones, all Jains, flower-cloaked ones;

Those with three staves, single top-knotted ones, come to my house.

286.

"Ājīvakas, plunderers, those with ox-practices, those with god-practices;

These bearers of muddy dirt, come to my house.

287.

"Few are those who have attained peace, many are those prone to wrath;

Austere ascetics and forest dwellers come to my house.

288.

"Oḍḍakas and Damiḷas, Sākuḷas and Malavāḷakas;

Savaras and Yonakas, they come to my house.

289.

"Andhakans, shavelings all, Koṭalans, Hanuvindakans;

And those from Ārāvacīna country, come to my house.

290.

"Alexandrians and Pallavas, Dhamma-delighting and followers of the departed;

Householders and servants too, come to my house.

291.

"Madhurakans, Kosalans, Kalingas, elephant-traders;

Isindas and Makkalas too, they come to my house.

292.

"Celāvakas and Ārabbhas, Oghuḷhas and many Meghalas;

Khuddakas and Suddakas too, they come to my house.

293.

"From Rohaṇa and Sindh, funeral pyres and single-eared ones;

From Suraṭṭha and Aparanta, they come to my house.

294.

"The Suppārakas and princes, the Mallas and those of the Golden Land;

The Vajjians and Aṅgas, all of them come to my house.

295.

"Basket-makers and weavers, tanners and carpenters;

Smiths and potters come to my house.

296.

"Gem-cutters, metal workers, goldsmiths and cloth dealers;

And lead workers, all of them come to my house.

297.

"Fletchers and turners, weavers and perfumers;

Washermen and tailors, come to my house.

298.

"Oil dealers and wood-carriers, and water-carriers and servants;

Cooks and curry-keepers, come to my house.

299.

"Doorkeepers, royal bodyguards, prison guards, rubbish removers;

Elephant riders, elephant keepers, come to my house.

300.

"To the great king Ānanda, for my benefit I gave;

With the sevenfold jewel, I fulfil what is lacking.

301.

"All those whom I have praised, many people of different colours;

Having understood their minds, I satisfied them with jewels.

302.

"While lovely ones were speaking, while drums were being beaten;

While conches were being blown, I rejoiced in my own home.

303.

"The Blessed One at that time, the leader Padumuttara;

He with a hundred thousand masters, who had eliminated the mental corruptions.

304.

Together with the monks, the one with vision proceeded along the street;

Illuminating all directions, he shines like a lamp post.

305.

"All the drums are beaten, as the leader of the world goes;

Radiance radiates from him, like the risen sun.

306.

"Through the gaps in the door panels, and by the rays that entered;

In the inner houses, abundant light was at that very moment.

307.

Having seen the radiance of the Buddha, I said to the councillors:

"Without doubt the Supreme Buddha has come to this street."

308.

"Having quickly descended from the mansion, I went to the market place;

Having paid respect to the self-enlightened, I spoke these words.

309.

"'May the Buddha have compassion on me, the highest leader born of water;

That sage consented with a hundred thousand masters.'

310.

"Having invited the self-enlightened one, I led him to my own house;

There with food and drink, I satisfied the great sage.

311.

"When he had finished eating, having understood the proper time, of the Buddha, the foremost, such a one;

With a hundred-part musical instrument, I attended on the foremost Buddha.

312.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Having sat down inside the house, he spoke these verses.

313.

"'He who attended on me with music, and gave me food and drink;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

314.

"'Having become one with abundant food, with gold, with provisions;

This man will exercise sovereign power over the four continents.

315.

"'Having undertaken the five precepts, then the ten courses of action;

Having undertaken and proceeding, he will train the assembly.

316.

"A hundred thousand musical instruments, drums fully adorned;

They will constantly play for me, this is the fruit of attendance.

317.

"'For thirty thousand cosmic cycles, he will delight in the heavenly world;

Sixty-four times as lord of the gods, he will exercise divine kingship.

318.

"'Sixty-four times as a king, he will be a universal monarch;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

319.

"In a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, of the Okkāka clan origin;

Gotama by name, by clan, the Teacher in the world will be.

320.

"Whatever realm of rebirth he arises in, whether divinity or human;

Having become one of complete enjoyment, he will go to human existence.

321.

"'Having become a reciter, one who has gone beyond the three Vedas;

Seeking the highest good, he will wander this earth.

322.

"'He, having gone forth afterwards, urged on by wholesome root;

He will delight in the Dispensation of the Blessed One Gotama.'

323.

"'Having pleased the self-enlightened, Gotama, the bull of the Sakyans;

Having burnt up the defilements, this one will become a Worthy One.'

324.

"Like a tiger king in the forest, like a lion, the king of beasts;

Fearless I dwell today, in the Sakyan son's Dispensation.

325.

"In the heavenly world or among human beings, among the poor or in an unfortunate realm;

I do not see rebirth for me, this is the fruit of attendance.

326.

"I am devoted to seclusion, at peace, without clinging;

Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.

327.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

328.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

329.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Jatukaṇṇi spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Jatukaṇṇi is the ninth.

The Life History of the Elder Udena

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Paduma;

A hermitage was well made by me, a leaf-hut was well built.

331.

"Rivers flow there, with good fords, delightful;

With clear water, with cool water, rivers flow always.

332.

"Shad fish, rainy-season fish, balaja fish, munja fish, red fish;

These, beautifying the rivers, dwell in the river always.

333.

"Covered with mango and rose-apple trees, musk-rose and tilaka trees likewise;

Uddālaka trees and trumpet-flower trees, they adorn my hermitage.

334.

"Aṅkolaka trees and bimbijālā creepers, and māyākārī trees in bloom;

Blowing towards with their fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

335.

"Atimutta trees and sattalika trees, ironwood trees and sal trees in bloom;

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

336.

"Kosamba, Salala, and Nīpa trees, and also Aṭṭhaṅga trees in bloom;

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

337.

Yellow myrobalans, emblic myrobalans, mangoes, rose-apples, beleric myrobalans;

Jujubes, marking-nut trees, marmelos trees - many fruits in the hermitage.

"Kalamba and kandali there, bloom in my hermitage;

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

339.

"Asoka trees and piṇḍī water plants, and neem trees in bloom;

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

340.

"Punnāga trees and mountain punnāga trees, timira trees in bloom there;

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

341.

Nigguṇḍī and Sirinigguṇḍī, and Campa trees here in bloom;

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

342.

"Not far away is a pond, resounding with the singing of ruddy geese;

Covered with mandālaka flowers, and with lotuses and waterlilies.

"With clear water, with cool water, with good fords, delightful;

Clear, like crystal, they adorn my hermitage.

344.

"Lotuses flower there, white lotuses and waterlilies;

Covered with mandālaka flowers, they adorn my hermitage.

345.

"Shad fish, rainy-season fish, balaja fish, munja fish, red fish;

Wandering about there, they adorn my hermitage.

346.

Crocodiles and crocodiles too, and turtles and many seizers;

Pythons and boa constrictors too, they adorn my hermitage.

347.

"Pigeons, sun-geese, ruddy geese, river-dwellers;

Lapwings and myna-birds here, they adorn my hermitage.

348.

"Nayitā and mango-scented, ketaka trees there in bloom;

Wafting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage.

349.

"Lions, tigers and panthers, bears, wolves and hyenas;

Roaming about in the forest wilds, they adorn my hermitage.

350.

"Laden with a burden of matted hair, wearing antelope hides as upper garments;

Roaming about in the forest wilds, they adorn my hermitage.

351.

"These wearing antelope hides, prudent, of peaceful conduct;

All of them eating little food, they adorn my hermitage.

352.

"Having taken a carrying-pole burden, having entered the forest then;

Eating roots and fruits, they dwell in the hermitage then.

353.

"They do not bring firewood, nor water for washing the feet;

By the power of all, it is brought by itself.

354.

"Eighty-four thousand sages have assembled here;

All these are meditators, seekers of the highest good.

355.

"Austere ascetics leading the holy life, urging on to absorption;

All sky-dwellers, they dwell in the hermitage then.

356.

"Every five days they gather together, fully focused, of peaceful conduct;

Having paid respect to one another, they depart facing the directions.

357.

"The Conqueror named Padumuttara, who has gone beyond all phenomena;

Dispelling the darkness of ignorance, the Conqueror arose at that very moment.

358.

"In the vicinity of my hermitage, there was a demon of great supernormal power;

He praised to me the self-enlightened, the supreme leader born of the water.

359.

"This Buddha has arisen, Padumuttara, the great sage;

Having gone quickly to the self-enlightened one, attend on him, dear sir.

360.

"Having heard the word of the demon, with a clear mind;

Having set in order the hermitage, I departed from the forest then.

361.

"When my cloth was burning, having gone forth from the hermitage;

Having stayed for one night, I approached the guide.

362.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Making known the four truths, he taught the Deathless state.

363.

"Having taken a fully blossomed lotus, having approached the great sage;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I placed it upon the Buddha.

364.

"Having venerated the self-enlightened, the supreme leader born of the water;

Having arranged my antelope skin on one shoulder, I praised the leader of the world.

365.

"By which knowledge the Fully Self-Enlightened One, without mental corruptions, dwells here;

That knowledge I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

366.

"'Having cut through the stream of wandering in the round of rebirths, you helped all living beings to cross;

Having heard your teaching, they cross the stream of craving.

367.

"You are the Teacher and the banner, the flag and the sacrificial post for living beings;

The ultimate goal and the support, the island, O best of bipeds.

368.

"As far as in the world there are those with followings, who are called caravan leaders;

You are the highest, the Omniscient One, they are included within you.

369.

"'By your knowledge, O Omniscient One, you help many people to cross;

Having come to see you, they will make an end of suffering.

370.

'Whatever kinds of perfumes blow in the world, O One with Vision;

There is none equal to your odour, O great sage, field of merit.'

371.

"'From the animal realm and hell, you delivered, O One with Vision;

The unconditioned state, peaceful, you taught, O great sage.'

372.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Having sat down in the community of monks, he spoke these verses.

373.

"Whoever venerated my knowledge, devoted, with his own hands;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

374.

"'For thirty thousand cosmic cycles, he will delight in the heavenly world;

A thousand times he will be a king, a universal monarch.'

375.

"I have obtained a well-gained gain, having pleased the one of good conduct;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, I dwell without mental corruptions.

376.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

377.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

378.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Udena spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Udena is the tenth.

The Metteyya Chapter is the forty-first.

Its summary:

Metteyya, Puṇṇaka the elder, Mettagū and also Dhotaka;

Upasīva and Nanda, Hemaka the seventh there.

Todeyya and Jatukaṇṇī, and Udena of great fame;

Three hundred verses here, eighty and three more.
