The Chapter on Supāricariya

1.

The Life History of the Elder Supāricariya

1.

"Paduma by name, the lord of bipeds, the lord of men;

Having gone forth from the wilds, the one with vision teaches the Teaching.

2.

"There was a time for the demons, not far from the great sage;

Having arrived for whatever purpose, they looked on at that very moment.

3.

"Having understood the Buddha's word, and the teaching of the Deathless;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, having clapped my hands, I attended.

4.

"See the fruit of what was well practised, of attendance upon the Teacher;

For thirty thousand cosmic cycles, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.

5.

"In twenty-nine hundred cosmic cycles, named Samalaṅkata;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

6.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Supāricariyo spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Supāricariya is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Kaṇaverapupphiya

"The Blessed One named Siddhattha, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Honoured by disciples, proceeded towards the city.

8.

"I was in the king's inner palace, an authorized guardian;

Seated in the mansion, I saw the leader of the world.

9.

"Having taken oleander flowers, I sprinkled them on the community of monks;

Having made a separate offering to the Buddha, I then sprinkled even more.

10.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

11.

"Eighty-seven cosmic cycles from now, there were four of great supernormal power;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

12.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kaṇaverapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Kaṇaverapupphiya is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Khajjakadāyaka

13.

"To Tissa, the Blessed One, in the past I gave fruit;

And I gave a coconut, a sweet-meat well esteemed.

14.

"Having given that to the Buddha, to Tissa the great sage;

I rejoice, one who possesses sensual pleasures as desired, I was reborn wherever I wished.

15.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving fruit.

16.

"Thirteen cosmic cycles from now, there was a king equal to Indra;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

17.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Khajjakadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Khajjakadāyaka is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Desapūjaka

"The Blessed One Atthadassī, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Having risen up into the sky, goes through the sky-path.

19.

"In which region the Teacher stood, the great sage rose up;

That region I venerated, devoted, with my own hands.

20.

"In eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, I saw that Great Sage;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring a region.

21.

"Eleven hundred cosmic cycles ago, one named Gosujāta;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

22.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Desapūjaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Desapūjaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Kaṇikārachattiya

"Vessabhū by name, the Fully Self-Enlightened One, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

The sage, for the day residence, plunged into the great forest.

24.

"Having plucked kaṇikāra flowers, having made an umbrella then;

Having made a flower covering, I placed it upon the Buddha.

25.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

26.

"Twenty cosmic cycles from now, eight warriors with golden radiance;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

27.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kaṇikāracchattiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Kaṇikārachattiya is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Sappidāyaka

"Phussa was the name of the Blessed One, the receiver of oblations;

The hero goes along the street, extinguishing the great multitude.

29.

"Gradually the Blessed One came to my presence;

Then, having held up that bowl, I gave ghee and oil.

30.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave ghee then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the gift of ghee.

31.

"Fifty-six cosmic cycles ago from now, there was one Samodaka;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

32.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sappidāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Sappidāyaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Yūthikapupphiya

33.

"On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I went downstream;

There I saw the Self-Become One, like a fully blossomed king of sal trees.

34.

"Having taken a jasmine flower, I approached the great sage;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I placed it upon the Buddha.

35.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

36.

"Sixty-seven cosmic cycles hence, there was one who lifted up;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

37.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Yūthikapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Yūthikapupphiya is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Dussadāyaka

38.

"In the charming city of Tivarā, I was a prince then;

Having received a present, I was always a servant of the Peaceful One.

39.

"The Blessed One consented, he touched the cloth with his hand;

Siddhattha, having consented, rose up into the sky.

40.

"As the Buddha was going, cloths run behind;

There I gladdened my mind, the Buddha is our foremost person.

41.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave cloth then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving cloth.

42.

"Sixty-seven cosmic cycles hence, there was a wheel-turning monarch;

By the name Parisuddha, a lord of men of great power.

43.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Dussadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Dussadāyaka is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Samādapaka

44.

"In the city of Bandhumatī, there was a great group of guilds;

Of them I was the most excellent, and they were my bound companions.

45.

"Having assembled all of them, I undertook meritorious action;

'Let us build a pavilion for the Community, the unsurpassed field of merit.'

46.

Having replied "Good!", they, following my wish and will;

And having completed that pavilion, we gave to Vipassī.

47.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave a pavilion then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving a pavilion.

48.

"Sixty-nine cosmic cycles ago,

There was one lord of men.

Ādeyya by name, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

49.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Samādapaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Samādapaka is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Pañcaṅguliya

50.

"Tissa was the name of the Blessed One, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

The sage, skilled in dwelling, enters the perfumed chamber.

51.

Having taken a fragrant garland, I went into the presence of the Conqueror;

And silently towards the Self-enlightened One, I gave a five-fingered salute.

52.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I planted that odour;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the five fingers.

53.

"Seventy-two cosmic cycles ago from now, I was a king, self-radiant;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

54.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Pañcaṅguliya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Pañcaṅguliya is the tenth.

The Chapter on Supāricariya is the seventeenth.

Its summary:

Supāricari, Kaṇaverī, Khajjaka, Desapūjaka;

Kaṇikāra, Sappidada, Yūthika, Dussadāyaka;

Māḷa and Pañcaṅgulika, fifty-four verses.
