1.

The Life History of the Elder Timirapupphiya

1.

"On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I went downstream;

Having seen the ascetic seated, serene, undisturbed.

2.

"Having gladdened my mind there, thus I thought then;

'This one who has crossed over will help others cross, this tamed one will tame others.'

3.

"Being comforted, he will comfort, and being peaceful, he will bring peace;

Being released, he will release, and being quenched, he will quench.

4.

"Having thus reflected, upon Siddhattha, the great sage;

Having taken timira flowers, I scattered them on his head.

5.

"Having raised my joined palms, and having circumambulated him keeping him on my right;

Having paid homage at the Teacher's feet, I departed to another direction.

6.

"Not long after I had just gone, the king of beasts harassed me;

Following the precipice, right there I fell.

7.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of flower-offering.

8.

"In the fifty-sixth cosmic cycle, seven were of great fame;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

9.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Timirapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Timirapupphiya is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Gatasaññaka

"Seven years old by birth, I went forth into homelessness;

I venerated the Teacher's feet, with a clear mind.

11.

"Seven plough-flowers, into space I threw;

Directed towards Tissa Buddha, the ocean of infinite virtues.

12.

Having venerated the path followed by the Fortunate One, with joyful mind;

And I made a salutation with joined palms, devoted, with my own hands.

13.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

14.

"In the eighth cosmic cycle from now, there were three Flame-Crests;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

15.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Gatasaññaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Gatasaññaka is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Nipannañjalika

16.

"Seated at the root of a tree, I was afflicted by a severe disease;

I had reached the utmost pitiable state, in the forest grove.

17.

"Out of compassion, the Teacher Tissa approached me;

And I, lying down, being peaceful, having made a salutation with joined palms at my head.

18.

"With a confident mind, glad at heart, the highest of all beings;

Having paid respect to the self-enlightened, there I deceased.

19.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I paid homage to the highest of men;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of homage.

20.

"Five cosmic cycles from now, there were just five great crested ones;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

21.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Nipannañjalika spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Nipannañjalika is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Adhopupphiya

"That monk named Abhibhū, the chief disciple of Sikhī;

Of great majesty, possessor of the threefold true knowledge, approached the Himalaya.

23.

"I too, in the Himalayas, in a delightful hermitage, a sage;

I dwell in the boundless states, and was then a master in supernormal powers.

24.

"Born as a bird, like in the sky, I overpowered the mountain;

Having taken a flower from below, I came to the mountain.

25.

"Having taken seven flowers, I scattered them on his head;

And when looked upon by the hero, I departed facing east.

26.

"Having attained a residence, having reached the hermitage, I;

Having taken a carrying-pole burden, I set out for the mountain interior.

27.

"A boa constrictor crushed me, of terrible form and great power;

Having remembered my former action, there I deceased.

28.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of flower-offering.

29.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Adhopupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Adhopupphiya is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Raṃsisaññaka

30.

"On the Himalayan mountain, I made my dwelling formerly;

Wearing an antelope hide as my upper garment, I dwell in the mountain caves.

31.

"The golden-coloured self-enlightened one, like the radiant sun;

Having seen him gone into the forest, like a king of sal trees in bloom.

32.

"Having gladdened my mind with the rays of Vipassī, the great sage;

Having raised my joined palms, I paid homage, squatting with my head bowed.

33.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the perception of rays.

34.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Raṃsisaññaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Raṃsisaññaka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Dutiyaraṃsisaññaka

35.

"On the Himalayan mountain, I was a wearer of bark garments;

Having ascended the walking path, I sat down facing east.

36.

"Having seen the Fortunate One on the mountain, Phussa, delighting in meditative absorption then;

Having raised my joined palms, I gladdened my mind with the rays.

37.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I obtained that perception then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the perception of rays.

38.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Raṃsisaññaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Dutiyaraṃsisaññaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Phaladāyaka

39.

"On the Himalayan mountain, I was a wearer of a rough antelope hide;

Having seen Phussa, the excellent conqueror, with fruit in hand, I gave fruit.

40.

"Whatever fruit I gave, with a clear mind;

When arising in existence, the fruit arises for me.

41.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave that fruit;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving fruit.

42.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Phaladāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Phaladāyaka is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Saddasaññaka

43.

"On the Himalayan mountain, I dwell on a mattress of leaves;

At the sound of Phussa teaching the Dhamma, I gladdened my mind.

44.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of meritorious action.

45.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Saddasaññaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Saddasaññaka is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Bodhisiñcaka

46.

"For the Blessed One Vipassī, there was a great Bodhi-tree festival;

Being one who had gone forth, peaceful, I approached then.

47.

"Having taken flower-water, I scattered it on the Bodhi tree;

Being released, he will release, and being quenched, he will quench.

48.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I sprinkled the Bodhi tree;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of sprinkling the Bodhi tree.

49.

"In the thirty-third cosmic cycle, there were lords of men;

Named Udakasecana, these eight were universal monarchs.

50.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bodhisiñcaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Bodhisiñcaka is the ninth.

The Life History of the Elder Padumapupphiya

51.

"Having entered the lotus grove, I was breaking lotuses;

There I saw the Buddha Phussa, with the thirty-two excellent characteristics.

52.

"Having taken a lotus flower, into space I threw;

Having remembered evil action, I went forth into homelessness.

53.

"Having gone forth, with the body, and with a restrained mind;

Having abandoned verbal misconduct, I purified my livelihood.

54.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

55.

"And eighteen kings named Padumābhāsa;

In eighteen cosmic cycles, forty-eight they were.

56.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Padumapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Padumapupphiya is the tenth.

The Timira Chapter is the ninth.

Its summary:

Timira, Naṅgalīpuppha, Nippannañjalika, Adho;

Two Raṃsisaññī, Phalada, Saddasaññī and Secaka;

And Padmapupphī - fifty-six verses have been praised.
