1.

The Life History of the Elder Ākāsukkhipiya

1.

"The golden-coloured Siddhattha, going through the market place;

Having taken two water-born flowers, I approached the lord of men.

2.

"One flower at the feet of the Buddha, the foremost, I placed;

And one flower, having held it up, into space I threw.

3.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the gift of flowers.

4.

"Thirty-six cosmic cycles from now, I was the sole lord of the earth;

Named Antalikkhakara, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

5.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ākāsukkhipiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Ākāsukkhipiya is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Telamakkhiya

"When the Blessed One Siddhattha, the lord of men, attained final Nibbāna;

I anointed oil on the railing of the Bodhi tree at that very moment.

7.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the oil which I anointed then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of anointing.

8.

"Twenty-four cosmic cycles ago from now, a warrior named Succhavi;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

9.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Telamakkhiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Telamakkhiya is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Aḍḍhacandiya

"To Tissa, the Blessed One, at the excellent Bodhi tree;

A half-moon offering was given by me, at the tree growing from the earth.

11.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I planted the moon;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the enlightenment.

12.

"Twenty-five cosmic cycles ago from now, a warrior named Devala;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

13.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Aḍḍhacandiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Aḍḍhacandiya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Padīpadāyaka

14.

"Being become a god, having descended to earth then;

I gave five lamps, devoted, with my own hands.

15.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave a lamp then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving a lamp.

16.

"In fifty-five cosmic cycles, I was the sole lord of the earth;

Named Samantacakkhu, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

17.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Padīpadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Padīpadāyaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Biḷālidāyaka

18.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Romasa;

At the foot of that mountain, an ascetic with developed faculties.

19.

"Having taken bulbous plants, I gave to the ascetic;

The great hero, the self-become one, unconquered, gave thanks.

20.

"The bilāli plant was given by me to you, with a clear mind;

When arising in existence, the fruit arose for you.

21.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave the bilālī plant;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the bilālī plant.

22.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Biḷālidāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Biḷālidāyaka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Macchadāyaka

"On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was an osprey then;

Having held up a great fish, I gave it to the sage Siddhattha.

24.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave fish then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving fish.

25.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Macchadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Macchadāyaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Javahaṃsaka

"On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was a forester then;

I saw Siddhattha the Buddha, going through the sky-path.

27.

"Having raised my joined palms, looking up at the great sage;

Having gladdened my own mind, I venerated the leader.

28.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, I paid homage to the lord of men;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of homage.

29.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Javahaṃsaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Javahaṃsaka is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Saḷalapupphiya

30.

"On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was a kinnara then;

I saw the Buddha Vipassī, covered with a net of rays.

31.

"With a confident mind, glad at heart, and with supreme rapture;

Having held up a sal flower, I scattered it upon Vipassī.

32.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

33.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Saḷalapupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Saḷalapupphiya is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Upāgatāsaya

34.

"In the middle of the Himalayas, there was a well-created lake;

There I was a demon, of base character, frightful.

35.

"Compassionate and merciful, Vipassī, the leader of the world;

Wishing to uplift me, he came to my presence.

36.

"The great hero who had arrived, the god of gods, the lord of men;

Having gone forth from my dwelling place, I venerated the Teacher.

37.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I paid homage to the highest of men;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of homage.

38.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Upāgatāsaya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Upāgatāsaya is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Taraṇiya

39.

"Golden-coloured, the Fully Self-Enlightened One, Vipassī, worthy of offerings;

The Teacher, standing on the riverbank, honoured by the community of monks.

40.

"There was no boat there, for crossing over the great ocean;

Having gone forth from the river, I helped the leader of the world across.

41.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I helped the highest among men across;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of crossing over.

42.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Taraṇiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Taraṇiya is the tenth.

The Padumukkhipa Chapter is the twenty-seventh.

Its summary:

Ukkhipī and Telacandī, and Dīpada and Biḷālida;

Maccha, Java, Saḷalada, Rakkhasa, Taraṇa, ten;

And the verses herein reckoned, forty and one.
