Having paid respect to the self-enlightened, I departed facing north.

4.

"Not long after I had just gone, the king of beasts struck me;

Being struck by the lion, there I deceased.

"The action done by me near the Buddha, the foremost one, without mental corruptions;

Well released like the speed of an arrow, I went to the world of the gods.

6.

"There was a beautiful sacrificial post, created by meritorious deeds;

With a thousand storeys, a hundred pinnacles, adorned with flags, made of green gold.

7.

"Radiance radiates from him, like the risen sun;

Crowded by heavenly maidens, I rejoiced, desiring sensual pleasures.

I wander in two existences, in divinity and also in humanity.

50.

"Having fallen away from the world of the gods, having come to human existence;

I am born in two families, in the warrior caste and also in the brahmin caste.

51.

"Endowed with major and minor limbs, with height and girth;

I am handsome and pure, with complete limbs, not deficient.

52.

"In the heavenly world or among human beings, or born wherever anywhere;

In existence golden-coloured, like molten gold.

53.

"Soft, gentle, smooth, subtle, delicate;

My skin is always so, when the Bodhi leaves are well discarded.

54.

"From wherever in the destinations, when a body has arisen;

Dust and dirt do not cling, the result when the bowl is discarded.

55.

In heat, wind and sun, or else by the heat of fire;

Sweat does not emit from his body, the result when the bowl is discarded.

56.

"Leprosy and boils and eczema, moles and blisters likewise;

Ringworm too does not arise in the body, the result when the bowl is discarded.

There is no mind-produced affliction, the result when the bowl is discarded.

"Both internal and external, townspeople and those with their kingdoms;

All are engaged, desiring growth, wishing for happiness.

65.

"I am wealthy and glorious, splendid with kinsmen's support;

Free from fear and trembling, may I be in every existence.

66.

"Gods, humans, titans, gandhabbas, demons and goblins;

All of them protect him, as he transmigrates through existences always.

67.

"In the heavenly world and among human beings, having experienced glory in both;

And at the end, Nibbāna, the safe, unsurpassed, he attained.

68.

"Having dedicated to the Self-Enlightened One, or to the enlightenment of that Teacher;

Whatever man generates merit, what indeed is difficult to obtain for him?

69.

"In the path and fruit and scripture, and in the qualities of meditative absorption and direct knowledge;

Having become superior to others, I attain final liberation without mental corruptions.

"With a confident mind, glad at heart, having made a salutation with joined palms at my head;

Having paid respect to the Self-enlightened One, I gave a gallnut fruit.

"In this fortunate cosmic cycle, a kinsman of Brahma of great fame;

Kassapa by clan, the best of speakers arose.

82.

"Accomplished in features, possessing the thirty-two excellent characteristics;

Surrounded by a fathom-wide radiance, covered with a net of rays.

83.

A consoler like the moon, a light-bringer like the sun;

An extinguisher like a cloud, a mine of virtues like the ocean.

84.

Like the earth in morality, like the Himalayas in concentration;

Like space in wisdom, unattached like the wind.

85.

"He, the great hero, sometimes confident in the assemblies;

Makes known the truths, lifting up the great multitude.

86.

"At that time in Bārāṇasī, a merchant's son of great fame;

I was then of abundant wealth and grain, of much.

87.

"Walking about for leg exercise, having approached the deer-park;

I saw the stainless Buddha, teaching the Deathless state.

88.

"With clear and pleasant speech, with a voice like the Indian cuckoo;

With a proclamation like the calls of swans, teaching the great multitude.

89.

"Having seen him, the god above gods, and having heard his sweet utterance;

Having abandoned not insignificant wealth, I went forth into homelessness.

90.

"Having thus gone forth, before long I became very learned;

I was a preacher of the Teaching, with varied inspiration.

91.

In the midst of the great assembly, with joyful mind, again and again,

I praised the excellence of the golden-coloured one, skilled in praising.

92.

"This is the Buddha who has eliminated the mental corruptions, without trouble, with doubt cut off;

Having attained the elimination of all action, liberated in the extinction of clinging.

93.

"This is that Blessed One, the Buddha, this is the unsurpassed lion;

The one who sets in motion the sublime wheel for the world with its gods.

94.

"Tamed, a tamer, peaceful, a pacifier, quenched, a sage;

An extinguisher and comforted, a consoler of the great multitude.

95.

"A hero, valiant and courageous, wise, compassionate, a master;

Victorious and a conqueror, not proud, without attachment.

96.

"Imperturbable, immovable, wise, non-deluded, matchless sage;

A beast of burden, a leading bull, an elephant, a lion, able even among the venerable.

97.

"Dispassion, spotless, Brahmā, a speaker, valiant, one who abandons conflict;

Without barrenness and free from the dart, matchless, self-controlled, pure.

98.

"Brahmin, ascetic, protector, physician, surgeon;

Warrior, Buddha, learned and unlearned, immovable, joyful, smiling.

99.

"The supporter, the retainer, and the peaceful, the doer, the leader, the proclaimer;

The gladdener, the breaker, the cutter, the stream, the praised one.

100.

"Without barrenness and free from the dart, without trouble, free from doubt;

Without longing, stainless, the doer, odours, the speaker, the praised one.

101.

"A helper across, a doer of good, a causer to act, one who accomplishes;

One who causes to attain, enduring, lovely, a slayer, ardent, an ascetic.

102.

"With even mind, equal to the matchless, without companion, an abode of compassion;

Marvellous being, without deceit, one who has done what was to be done, the seventh sage.

103.

"Having crossed over uncertainty, free from pride, immeasurable, incomparable;

Gone beyond all paths of speech, the Conqueror who has reached the end of what is to be understood through truth.

104.

"In that excellent being of substance, confidence brings the Deathless;

Therefore faith in the Buddha and the Teaching and the Community is of great benefit.

105.

"With such virtues and so on, praising the supreme refuge of the three worlds,

In the midst of the assembly, I gave a talk on the Teaching.

106.

"Having passed away from Tusita, having experienced great happiness;

Having passed away from there among human beings, I was born as Sugandhika.

107.

"My breath and mouth odour, likewise my body odour;

And the odour of sweat constantly, all odours are mine.

108.

"The odour of my mouth is always like lotus, waterlily and champaka;

The assembly always blows fragrant, and likewise my body too.

109.

"The entire fruit of one endowed with virtues and meaning is supremely wonderful;

All with fully focused minds, I will praise, listen to me.

110.

"Having spoken of the Buddha's virtue, incomparable for welfare;

I am happy everywhere, the Community is endowed with heroes.

111.

"Famous, happy, pleasant, brilliant, agreeable to behold;

A speaker, not despised, faultless, and likewise wise.

112.

"When life is exhausted, Nibbāna is easily obtained by one devoted to the Buddha;

I will declare their cause, listen to that according to truth.

113.

"Paying respect in due method to the existing fame of the Blessed One;

Wherever I am reborn, by that I become famous.

114.

"The Buddha who makes an end of suffering, the Teaching peaceful and unconditioned;

Praising them, I was a giver of happiness, and from that I was happy among beings.

115.

"Speaking the virtue of the Buddha, endowed with joy in the Buddha;

I generated my own radiance and others' radiance, thereby becoming radiant.

116.

"The Conqueror, in that place crowded with sectarians, having overcome the false teachers;

Speaking the virtue, I illuminated the leader, brilliant from that.

117.

"Doing what is dear to people, speaking the virtues of the Fully Self-Enlightened One;

Like the autumn moon with its hare, therefore I was agreeable to behold.

118.

"According to my ability, I praised with all my words;

The Fortunate One, therefore Vāgīsa, with variegated inspiration.

119.

"Those fools who have reached doubt, despise the great sage;

I rebuked them by the Good Teaching, I am not despised by that.

120.

"By the praise of the Buddha, I removed the defilements of beings;

I became one with a mind free from defilements, owing to that action.

121.

"I produced growth for the listeners, as a preacher of recollection of the Buddha;

Thereby I was wise, one gifted with introspection into subtle meanings.

122.

"With all mental corruptions eliminated, one who has crossed over the ocean of the round of rebirths;

Like fire without clinging, I shall attain peace.

123.

"In this very cosmic cycle, in which I praised the Conqueror;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of praising the Buddha.

124.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

125.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

126.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sugandha spoke these verses.
