The Chapter on Tamālapupphiya

1.

The Life History of the Elder Tamālapupphiya

1.

"Eighty-four thousand golden pillars there were;

Like a divine staff in comparison, my mansion was well-fashioned.

2.

"Having held up a tamāla flower, with a clear mind;

Placed them upon the Buddha, Sikhi, the kinsman of the world.

3.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

4.

"Twenty cosmic cycles from now, one alone named Candatitta;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

5.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tamālapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Tamālapupphiya is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Tiṇasanthāraka

"When the forest-dwelling sage mowed grass for the Teacher;

All turning to the right, they fell upon the earth.

7.

"Having taken that grass, I spread it on the excellent earth;

Having brought just three palm leaves, I then.

8.

"Having made a roof with grass, I gave to Siddhattha;

For seven days they held it for him, the Teacher of gods and humans.

9.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave that grass then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving grass.

10.

"Sixty-five cosmic cycles from now, four were of great riches;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

11.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tiṇasanthāraka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Tiṇasanthāraka is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Khaṇḍapulliya

"The stupa of the Blessed One Phussa was in the great forest;

Broken by elephants then, a tree grew there.

13.

"Having made the uneven even, I gave a lump of lime;

Pleased by the virtues of that one, the teacher of the three worlds.

14.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the lime almsfood.

15.

"In the seventy-seventh cosmic cycle, sixteen were victorious in battle;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

16.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Khaṇḍaphulliya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Khaṇḍapulliya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Asokapūjaka

"In the charming city of Tivarā, there was a royal garden then;

I was a park keeper there, a devoted servant of the king.

18.

"Paduma by name, self-become, with radiance he was;

Seated on a white lotus, the shadow did not leave that sage.

19.

"Having seen an Asoka tree in bloom, a cluster laden, beautiful to behold;

I placed it upon the Buddha, whose name is the Highest Water-born.

20.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

21.

"In thirty-seven cosmic cycles, sixteen who gave up conflict;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

22.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Asokapūjaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Asokapūjaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Aṅkolaka

"Having seen an aṅkola tree in bloom, excellent for garlands, with buds;

Having plucked that flower, I went to the presence of the Buddha.

24.

"Siddhattha at that time, the great sage, withdrawn;

Having waited for a moment, I scattered flowers in the cave.

25.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the gift of flowers.

26.

"Thirty-six cosmic cycles ago from now, one named Āseka, thunderer of the gods;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

27.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Aṅkolaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Aṅkolaka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Kisalayapūjaka

"In the city of Dvāravatī, a flower garden was mine;

And right there a well, for the growing of trees.

29.

"Supported by Sabala, Siddhattha, unconquered;

He, having compassion for me, goes through the sky-path.

30.

"I do not see anything else, suitable for honouring the great sage;

Having seen an Asoka sprout, into space I threw.

31.

"Those tender shoots of the Buddha, as he went, followed behind;

Having seen them, I was stirred, oh, the greatness of the Buddha!

32.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, I placed a sprout;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

33.

"Thirty-seven cosmic cycles ago from now, there was one sole sovereign;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

34.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kisalayapūjaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Kisalayapūjaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Tindukadāyaka

"I was a roamer in mountain fastnesses, a monkey of strength and speed;

Having seen a tinduka tree with fruit, I recollected the foremost Buddha.

36.

"Having gone forth for a few days, I searched for the leader of the world;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, Siddhattha, who has gone to the end of the three existences.

37.

"Having understood my thought, the Teacher, unsurpassed in the world,

With a thousand who eliminated the mental corruptions, came to my presence.

38.

"Having generated gladness, with fruit in hand, I approached;

The Blessed One accepted, the omniscient one, the best of speakers.

39.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave that fruit then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving fruit.

40.

"Fifty-seven cosmic cycles ago, one named Upananda;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

41.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tindukadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Tindukadāyaka is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Muṭṭhipūjaka

"The Blessed One named Sumedha, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Out of compassion for those who come after, the Conqueror strove in striving.

43.

"To him who was walking up and down, to the lord of bipeds, such a one;

A handful of mountain nela flowers, I planted for the Buddha.

44.

"By that confidence of mind, urged on by wholesome root;

For thirty thousand cosmic cycles, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.

45.

"Twenty-three hundred cosmic cycles ago, a warrior named Sunela;

Endowed with the seven treasures, I was the sole one of great power.

46.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Muṭṭhipūjaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Muṭṭhipūjaka is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Kiṃkaṇikapupphiya

47.

"Sumaṅgala by name, self-become, unconquered;

Having gone forth from the wilds, the Conqueror entered the city.

48.

Having walked for almsfood, having gone out from the town, the sage;

Like one who has performed his obligations, the Fully Self-Enlightened One, that master dwelt in the midst of the forest.

49.

Having held up a kiṃkaṇi flower, I placed it upon the Buddha;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, to the self-born great sage.

50.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

51.

"Eighty-six cosmic cycles from now, named Apilāsi;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

52.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kiṃkaṇikapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Kiṃkaṇikapupphiya is the ninth.

The Life History of the Elder Yūthikapupphiya

53.

"The Conqueror named Padumuttara, the receiver of oblations;

Having gone forth from the wilds, the one with vision goes to the monastery.

54.

"Having held up with both hands, the jasmine flower, the highest;

Upon the Buddha I placed it, having a benevolent heart, such a one.

55.

"By that confidence of mind, having experienced accomplishment;

For a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.

56.

"Fifty cosmic cycles from now, I was the sole lord of men;

Named Samittanandana, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

57.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Yūthikapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Yūthikapupphiya is the tenth.

The Tamālapupphiya Chapter is the twentieth.

Its summary:

Tamālatiṇasanthāra, Khaṇḍaphulli, Asokiya;

Aṅkolakī, Kisalaya, Tinduka, Nelapupphiya;

Kiṃkaṇika and Yūthika, fifty-eight verses.

Then the chapter summary:

Bhikkhādāyī, Parivāra, Sereyya, Sobhita likewise;

Chatta and Bandhujīvī, and Supāricariya also.

Kumuda and Kuṭaja, Tamāli made the tenth;

Six hundred verses, and sixty-six beyond that.

The Ten Chapters on Almsfood.

The Second Hundred is complete.
