1.

The Life History of the Elder Bhaddāli

1.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Sumedha, the foremost compassionate sage;

Desiring seclusion, the chief of the world, approached the Himalayas.

2.

"Having plunged into the Himalaya, the wise one, the leader of the world;

Folding his legs crosswise, the highest of men sat down.

3.

"He, having attained concentration, the wise one, the leader of the world;

For seven nights and days the Buddha, the highest of men, sat down.

4.

"Having taken a carrying-pole burden, I entered into the midst of the forest;

There I saw the self-enlightened one, a crosser of the mental floods, without mental corruptions.

5.

"Having taken a broom, having swept the hermitage;

Having set up four poles, I made a pavilion then.

6.

"Having brought sal flowers, I covered the pavilion;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I bowed down to the Tathāgata.

7.

"He whom they call the wise one, of extensive wisdom, the wise;

Having sat down in the community of monks, he spoke these verses.

8.

"Having understood the Buddha's word, all the gods assembled;

Without doubt the Supreme Buddha, the one with vision, teaches the Teaching.

9.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Sumedha, the receiver of oblations;

Having sat down in the assembly of gods, spoke these verses.

10.

"'He who for seven days held a pavilion for me, covered with sal branches;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

11.

"Whether become a god or a human, he will be golden-coloured;

Having become one of abundant wealth, he will be an enjoyer of sensual pleasures.

12.

"Sixty thousand elephants, adorned with all ornaments;

Mātaṅgas with golden trappings, clothed in golden adornments.

13.

"Mounted by village headmen, with spears and goads in hand;

In the evening and morning for attendance, they will come to this man;

Surrounded by those elephants, this man will delight.

14.

"Sixty thousand horses, adorned with all ornaments;

Thoroughbreds by birth, Sindh horses with swift conveyance.

15.

"Mounted by village headmen, bearing short swords and bows;

They will constantly surround me, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

16.

"Sixty thousand chariots, adorned with all ornaments;

With panther skins and also tiger skins, armoured with raised banners.

17.

"Mounted by village headmen, with bows in hand, wearing armour;

They will constantly surround me, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

18.

"Sixty thousand villages, complete in every respect;

With abundant wealth and grain, thoroughly prosperous in every respect;

Will always appear, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

19.

"'Elephants, horses, chariots, infantry, and a fourfold army;

They will constantly surround me, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

20.

"For eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, he will delight in the heavenly world;

A thousand times he will be a king, a universal monarch.

21.

"'Three hundred times he will exercise divine kingship;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

22.

"In thirty thousand cosmic cycles, of the Okkāka clan origin;

Gotama by name, by clan, the Teacher in the world will be.

23.

"'His heir in the teachings, legitimate, created by the Teaching;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will dwell without mental corruptions.'

24.

"In thirty thousand cosmic cycles, I saw the leader of the world;

From that time onwards, I sought the Deathless state.

25.

"It is a gain for me, it is well-gained for me, that I understood the teaching;

The three true knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

26.

"Homage to you, thoroughbred among men, homage to you, highest of men;

Having praised your knowledge, I have attained the unshakeable state.

27.

"Whatever realm of rebirth I am reborn in, whether divinity or human;

Everywhere I am happy, this is the fruit of praising knowledge.

28.

"This is my last, the final existence goes on;

Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.

29.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, all existences have been uprooted;

Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.

30.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, my coming to the Buddha's presence;

The three true knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

31.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bhaddāli spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Bhaddāli is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Ekachattiya

32.

"On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, a hermitage was well made by me;

Strewn with very clean sand, a leaf-hut was well built.

33.

"A small river with shallow banks, with good fords, delightful;

Abounding in fish and turtles, frequented by crocodiles.

34.

"Bears, panthers and peacocks, Indian cuckoos and myna-birds;

These always chirp, beautifying my hermitage.

35.

"Cuckoos, charming speakers, and swans with sweet voices;

They warble there, beautifying my hermitage.

36.

"Lions, tigers and boars, bears, wolves and hyenas;

They roar in the mountain fortress, beautifying my hermitage.

37.

"Antelopes and sarabha deer, jackals and many pigs;

They roar in the mountain fortress, beautifying my hermitage.

38.

"Uddālaka trees and champaka trees, trumpet-flower trees and sinduvāraka trees;

Atimutta trees and asoka trees, adorn my hermitage.

39.

"Aṅkola trees and jasmine, sattalī and bimbijālā creepers;

Kaṇikāra trees are blooming, beautifying my hermitage.

40.

"Ironwood trees and sal trees and salala trees, white lotuses here in bloom;

Wafting divine fragrance, adorn my hermitage.

41.

"Arjuna trees and asana trees here, and mahānāma trees in bloom;

Sal trees and millet-flowered trees, adorn my hermitage.

42.

"Mango trees and rose-apple trees and tilaka trees, neem trees and beautiful sal trees;

Wafting divine fragrance, adorn my hermitage.

43.

"Asoka trees and elephant-apple trees, and mountain garlands in bloom here;

Wafting divine fragrance, adorn my hermitage.

44.

"Kadamba trees and plantains too, and sage's beans were planted;

They constantly bear fruits, beautifying my hermitage.

45.

Yellow myrobalans, emblic myrobalans, mangoes, rose-apples, beleric myrobalans;

Jujubes, marking-nut trees, marmelos trees, bearing fruit in my hermitage.

46.

"Not far away is a pond, with good fords, delightful;

Covered with mandālaka flowers, and with lotuses and waterlilies.

47.

"The lotuses take embryo, others bloom with stamens;

And those with fallen pericarps, bloom in my hermitage.

48.

"Shad fish, rainy-season fish, balaja fish, munja fish, red fish;

Moving about in the clear water, adorn my hermitage.

49.

"Nayitā and mango-scented, and ketaka trees in favourable conditions;

Wafting divine fragrance, adorn my hermitage.

50.

"Honey flows from the lotus roots, milk and ghee from the tubers;

Wafting divine fragrance, adorn my hermitage.

51.

"The sandy banks there are beautiful, strewn about and frequented by water;

Covered with flowers, in bloom they lie, beautifying my hermitage.

52.

"Laden with a burden of matted hair, wearing antelope hides as upper garments;

All wearing bark garments, they adorn my hermitage.

53.

"Looking only a yoke's length ahead, prudent, of peaceful conduct;

Without concern for sensual pleasures, they dwell in my hermitage.

54.

"With overgrown armpit hair, nails, and body hair, with stained teeth, with dusty heads;

All bearers of muddy dirt, dwell in my hermitage.

55.

"Having attained the perfection of direct knowledge, and moving through the sky, they;

Rising up into the sky, these ones adorn my hermitage.

56.

"Surrounded by those pupils, I dwelt in the forest then;

I do not know night and day, always devoted to meditative absorption.

57.

"The Blessed One at that time, Atthadassī, the great sage;

Removing the darkness of ignorance, the leader of the world arose.

58.

"Then a certain pupil came to my presence;

He, wishing to study the sacred texts, the characteristic named the six-factored.

59.

"A Buddha has arisen in the world, intent upon the good, the great sage;

Making known the four truths, he teaches the Deathless state.

60.

"Satisfied, joyful, greatly delighted, with my dwelling place gone into the Teaching;

Having gone forth from the hermitage, I spoke these words.

61.

"'A Buddha has arisen in the world, bearing the thirty-two excellent characteristics;

Come, let us all go to the presence of the Fully Self-Enlightened One.'

62.

"They who accept exhortation, having reached perfection in their own teaching;

Replied 'Good!', seekers of the highest good.

63.

"They, laden with matted hair, wearing antelope hides as upper garments;

Seeking the highest good, they departed from the forest then.

64.

"The Blessed One at that time, Atthadassī of great fame;

Making known the four truths, he teaches the Deathless state.

65.

"Having taken a white parasol, I held it over the foremost Buddha;

Having held it for one day, I paid homage to the foremost Buddha.

66.

"The Blessed One Atthadassī, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Having sat down in the community of monks, he spoke these verses.

67.

"He who held an umbrella for me, devoted, with his own hands;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

68.

"'For this one being born, in divinity and also in humanity;

An umbrella will always be held, this is the fruit of giving an umbrella.

69.

"'For seventy-seven cosmic cycles, he will delight in the heavenly world;

A thousand times he will be a king, a universal monarch.

70.

"'Seventy-seven times, he will exercise divine kingship;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

71.

"'In eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, Gotama, the bull of the Sakyans;

Removing the darkness of ignorance, the one with vision will arise.

72.

"'His heir in the teachings, legitimate, created by the Teaching;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will dwell without mental corruptions.'

73.

"Since I performed the deed, holding an umbrella for the Buddha;

In between here I do not know a white parasol not held.

74.

"This is my last, the final existence goes on;

Even in the midst of umbrella-bearing, it goes on constantly.

75.

"Oh, well done is my action, for Atthadassī, such a one;

All mental corruptions are completely eliminated, there is now no more rebirth.

76.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

77.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

78.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekachattiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Ekachattiya is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Tiṇasūlakachādaniya

79.

"Birth and ageing and death, I reviewed then;

Having gone forth alone, I went forth into homelessness.

80.

"Wandering gradually, I approached the bank of the Ganges;

There I saw a piece of land, elevated on the bank of the Ganges.

81.

"Having built a hermitage there, I dwell in the hermitage;

A walking path was well made by me, frequented by various flocks of birds.

82.

"They approach me confidently, and chirp charmingly;

Delighting together with them, I dwell in the hermitage.

83.

"In the vicinity of my hermitage, the king of beasts, able to go in four directions;

Having gone forth from his dwelling place, he roared like a thunderbolt.

84.

"When the king of beasts roared, joy arose in me;

Seeking the king of beasts, I saw the leader of the world.

85.

"Having seen the god of gods, Tissa, the supreme leader of the world;

Joyful, with a joyful mind, I worshipped the nāga-kesara flower.

86.

Like the rising sun, like a king of sal trees in bloom;

Shining like the healing star, I praised the leader of the world.

87.

"'By your knowledge, O Omniscient One, you delivered this world with its gods;

Having pleased you, may I be released from birth.

88.

"By not seeing the omniscient Buddhas, the all-seeing ones;

They fall into the Avīci hell, overwhelmed by lust and hate.

89.

"'Having come to see you, omniscient, lord of the world;

They are freed from all existences, they reach the Deathless state.

90.

"'When Buddhas, those with vision, arise as light-bringers;

Having burnt up the defilements, they show forth the light.'

91.

"Having praised the self-enlightened, Tissa, the supreme leader of the world;

Joyful, with a joyful mind, I venerated the jasmine flower.

92.

"Having understood my thought, Tissa, the chief leader of the world,

Having sat down on his own seat, he spoke these verses.

93.

"'He who covered me with flowers, devoted, with his own hands;

Him I will explain, listen to me as I speak.

94.

"'Twenty-five times, he will exercise divine kingship;

And seventy-five times, he will be a universal monarch.

95.

"'Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting;

By the outcome of that action, and by the veneration with flowers.

96.

"'If this man, having bathed his head, desires a flower;

Connected with meritorious action, it will appear before him.

97.

"'Whatever he wishes for with sensual pleasures, that will appear;

Having fulfilled his thought, he will attain nibbāna, without mental corruptions.'

The eighteenth recitation section.

98.

"Having burnt up the defilements, fully aware, mindful;

Having sat down on one seat, I attained arahantship.

99.

"Walking up and down or lying down, seated or standing;

Having remembered the foremost Buddha, I always dwell.

100.

"Regarding robes and almsfood, regarding requisites and lodging;

There is no deficiency for me in that, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

101.

"He has now attained the Deathless, the unsurpassed state of peace;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, I dwell without mental corruptions.

102.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

103.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

104.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

105.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tiṇasūlakachādaniya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Tiṇasūlakachādaniya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Madhumaṃsadāyaka

106.

"In the city of Bandhumatī, I was a pork-butcher;

Having cooked the offal, I poured it over with honey and meat.

107.

"Having gone to the assembly, I took one bowl;

Having filled that bowl, I gave to the community of monks.

108.

"The elder monk who handed me over then for this purpose;

By this bowlful, may you obtain abundant happiness.

109.

"Having enjoyed the two successes, urged on by wholesome root;

When the final existence is progressing, he will burn up the defilements.

110.

"Having gladdened my mind there, I went to Tāvatiṃsa;

Having eaten and drunk there, I obtain abundant happiness.

111.

"In a pavilion or at the root of a tree, I recollected my former action;

A shower of food and drink, rains down upon me at that very moment.

112.

"This is my last, the final existence goes on;

Here too food and drink rains down for me, at all times.

113.

"By that very gift of honey, having transmigrated in existence, I;

Having fully understood all mental corruptions, I dwell without mental corruptions.

114.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving honey.

115.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

116.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

117.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Madhumaṃsadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Madhumaṃsadāyaka is the fourth.

5.

The Life History of the Elder Nāgapallava

118.

"In the city of Bandhumatī, in a royal garden I dwelt;

In the vicinity of my hermitage, the leader of the world sat down.

119.

"Having taken a nāga sprout, I placed it upon the Buddha;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I paid respect to the Fortunate One.

120.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I honoured with a young leaf;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

121.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

122.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

123.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Nāgapallava spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Nāgapallava is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Ekadīpiya

124.

"When the Fortunate One attained final Nibbāna, Siddhattha, the leader of the world;

All together with gods and humans venerate the highest of bipeds.

125.

And when the funeral pyre was prepared, Siddhattha, the leader of the world;

Each with their own strength, they venerate the pyre of the Teacher.

126.

"Not far from the funeral pyre, I lit a lamp;

Until the sun rose, my lamp blazed so long.

127.

"By that well-done action, and by volition and aspirations;

Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa.

128.

"There my divine mansion was well made, known as 'One Lamp';

A hundred thousand lamps blaze forth in my divine mansion.

129.

"Like the rising sun, my body always shines;

With radiance of the body, there is always light for me.

130.

"Through walls, through rocks, having passed over mountains;

All around for a hundred yojanas, I see with my eye.

131.

"Seventy-seven times, I delighted in the heavenly world;

Thirty-one times, I exercised divine kingship.

132.

"Twenty-eight times I was a universal monarch;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

133.

"Having fallen away from the world of the gods, I was reborn in my mother's womb;

Even while gone into my mother's womb, my eye does not close.

134.

"Four years old by birth, I went forth into homelessness;

Before a fortnight had passed, I attained arahantship.

135.

"I purified the divine eye, all existences have been uprooted;

All mental defilements have been cut off, this is the fruit of a single lamp.

136.

"Through walls, through rocks, and even through entire mountains;

Having transcended, I see, this is the fruit of a single lamp.

137.

"The uneven becomes even for me, darkness is not found;

I do not see gloom, this is the fruit of a single lamp.

138.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave a lamp then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of a single lamp.

139.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

140.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

141.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekadīpiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Ekadīpiya is the sixth.

7.

The Life History of the Elder Ucchaṅgapupphiya

142.

"In the city of Bandhumatī, I was a garland-maker then;

Having filled my lap, I went to the market place.

143.

"The Blessed One at that time, honoured by the Community of monks;

With great power, the leader of the world goes forth.

144.

"Having seen the light of the world, Vipassī, the one who leads the world across;

Having held up a flower from my lap, I venerated the foremost Buddha.

145.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

146.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

147.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

148.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ucchaṅgapupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Ucchaṅgapupphiya is the seventh.

8.

The Life History of the Elder Yāgudāyaka

149.

"Having taken my guest, I went to the small village then;

Having seen the full river, I approached the monastery.

150.

"Forest dwellers, practitioners of ascetic practices, meditators with coarse robes;

The wise, delighting in seclusion, they dwell in the monastery of the Community.

151.

"Their destination is cut off, of those well-liberated ones of such quality;

They do not go for almsfood, because of being obstructed and roaring.

152.

"With a confident mind, glad at heart, filled with joy, with joined palms;

Having taken my rice-grain, I gave a gift of rice gruel.

153.

Having given rice gruel to five, devoted, with my own hands;

Satisfied by my own actions, I went to Tāvatiṃsa.

154.

"And my divine mansion made of jewels arose among the company of the Thirty-three;

Together with groups of women, I rejoice in the highest divine mansion.

155.

"Thirty-three times as lord of the gods, I exercised divine kingship;

Thirty times as a wheel-turning monarch, I exercised great kingship.

156.

"Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting;

In the heavenly world or among human beings, having experienced myself.

157.

"When the final existence was attained, I went forth into homelessness;

As soon as my hair was cut off, I penetrated all.

158.

"Meditating on the corpse as elimination and passing away;

Before the undertaking of the training rules, I attained arahantship.

159.

"Well given by me was the excellent gift, trade well undertaken;

By that very giving of rice gruel, I have attained the unshakeable state.

160.

"Sorrow, lamentation, disease, disturbance, mental torment;

I do not directly know as arisen, this is the fruit of giving rice gruel.

161.

"Having given rice gruel to the Community, the unsurpassed field of merit;

I experience five benefits, oh, well offered is the rice gruel.

162.

"Freedom from illness, beauty, quick understanding of the teaching;

Obtaining of food and drink, with life span as the fifth - these are mine.

163.

"Whoever, producing inspiration, would give rice gruel to the Community;

These five states, the wise one would receive.

164.

"All that was to be done has been done, existences have been abolished by me;

All mental corruptions are completely eliminated, there is now no more rebirth.

165.

"I shall wander from village to village, from town to town;

Paying homage to the Self-enlightened One and to the good nature of the Teaching."

166.

"In thirty thousand cosmic cycles, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving rice gruel.

167.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

168.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

169.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Yāgudāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Yāgudāyaka is the eighth.

9.

The Life History of the Elder Patthodanadāyaka

170.

"Formerly I was a forester, constantly a forest worker;

Having taken a bowl of rice, I went to work.

171.

"There I saw the self-enlightened one, the Self-Become One, the unconquered;

Having gone forth from the forest for almsfood, having seen, I gladdened my mind.

172.

"Engaged in working for others, merit is not found in me;

This bowl of rice there is, I shall feed the sage.

173.

"Having taken a bowl of rice, I gave to the self-born one;

While I was gazing, the sage then consumed.

174.

"By that well-done action, and by volition and aspirations;

Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa.

175.

"Thirty-six times as lord of the gods, I exercised divine kingship;

Thirty-three times I was a king, a universal monarch.

176.

"Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting;

I am happy, glorious, this is the fruit of a bowl of rice.

177.

"Wandering in the round of rebirths from existence to existence, I obtain immeasurable wealth;

There is no deficiency in my wealth, this is the fruit of a bowl of rice.

178.

"Like the current of a river, wealth arises for me;

I am not able to measure it, this is the fruit of a bowl of rice.

179.

"Eat this, enjoy this, lie on this bed;

Therefore I am happy, this is the fruit of a bowl of rice.

180.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of a bowl of rice.

181.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

182.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

183.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Patthodanadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Patthodanadāyaka is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Mañcadāyaka

184.

"When the Compassionate One attained final Nibbāna, Siddhattha, the leader of the world;

When the Scriptures were widespread, honoured by gods and humans.

185.

"An outcast I was there, a maker of sofas and chairs;

By that work I live, by that I support my children.

186.

"Having made a well-crafted sofa, devoted, with my own hands;

Having approached myself, I gave to the community of monks.

187.

"By that well-done action, and by volition and aspirations;

Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa.

188.

"Having gone to the world of gods, being peaceful, I rejoice among the company of the Thirty-three;

Very costly beds arise at will.

189.

"Fifty times as lord of the gods, I exercised divine kingship;

Eighty times I was a king, a universal monarch.

190.

"Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting;

I am happy, glorious, this is the fruit of giving a bed.

191.

"Having fallen away from the world of the gods, if I go to human existence;

Very precious, excellent beds come to be mine by themselves.

"This is my last, the final existence goes on;

Even today at the time for sleeping, a bed stands close.

193.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving a bed.

194.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

195.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

196.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Mañcadāyaka spoke these verses.

Thus he spoke.

The life history of the Elder Mañcadāyaka is the tenth.
