The Chapter on Kuṭajapupphiya

1.

The Life History of the Elder Kuṭajapupphiya

1.

"The golden-coloured self-enlightened one, like the risen sun;

Surveying the direction, going through the sky-path.

2.

"Having seen a kuṭaja tree in bloom, spread out and covered over;

Having plucked it from the tree, I placed it upon Phussa.

3.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

4.

"Seventeen cosmic cycles from now, there were three fully blossomed;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

5.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kuṭajapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Kuṭajapupphiya is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Bandhujīvaka

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Siddhattha, the self-become one, praised by the virtuous;

He, having attained concentration, sat down in the mountain caves.

7.

"Seeking in the natural lake, the water-born flower, the highest;

I saw China-rose flowers immediately.

8.

"Having held up with both hands, I approached the Great Sage;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I planted for Siddhattha.

9.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

10.

"Fourteen cosmic cycles from now, I was the sole lord of men;

Samuddakappa by name, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

11.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bandhujīvaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Bandhujīvaka is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Koṭumbariya

12.

"Shining like a kaṇikāra tree, seated in the mountain caves;

Like the immeasurable ocean, like the extended earth.

13.

"Venerated by the host of gods, like a leading bull of good breed;

Joyful, with a joyful mind, I approached the highest among men.

14.

"Having held up seven flowers, filled with koṭumbara blossoms;

I placed it upon the Buddha, Sikhi, the kinsman of the world.

15.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

16.

"Twenty cosmic cycles from now, one named Mahānelasa;

There was one of great radiance, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

17.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Koṭumbariya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Koṭumbariya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Pañcahatthiya

18.

"Tissa was the name of the Blessed One, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Honoured by disciples, he proceeded along the road.

19.

"Five bundles of water-lilies, and four were placed by me;

Wishing to give an oblation, I held them up for the accomplishment of my ascetic practice.

20.

"The golden-coloured self-enlightened one, going through the market place;

Touched by the Buddha's rays, I honoured the highest of bipeds.

21.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

22.

"Thirteen cosmic cycles from now, five authorized as excellent bulls;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

23.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Pañcahatthiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Pañcahatthiya is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Isimuggadāyaka

24.

"Like the rising sun with a hundred rays, like the luminous moon with golden rays;

Like a shining hump of a bull, the leader Padumuttara.

25.

Having ground sage's beans, with honey and small bees' honey, without a nest;

Standing right on the mansion, being peaceful, I gave to the kinsman of the world.

26.

"Eight hundred thousand were the Buddha's disciples;

Filling the bowls of all, and even more than that.

27.

"By that confidence of mind, urged on by wholesome root;

For a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.

28.

"In forty thousand cosmic cycles, thirty-eight were they;

Named Isimugga, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

29.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Isimuggadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Isimuggadāyaka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Bodhiupaṭṭhāka

30.

"In the city of Rammavatī, I was a tambourine player;

I was constantly engaged in attendance, I went to the highest enlightenment.

31.

"Having attended morning and evening, urged on by wholesome root;

For eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.

32.

"Fifteen hundred cosmic cycles from now, I was a lord of men;

Muraja by name, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

33.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bodhiupaṭṭhāka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Bodhiupaṭṭhāka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Ekacintika

"When a god from the host of gods passes away through the exhaustion of life span;

Three sounds emanate, of the gods giving thanks.

35.

"'From here, friend, go to a good destination, to the company of human beings;

Having become a human being, in the Good Teaching, obtain unsurpassed faith.

36.

"'May that faith of yours, when settled, be rooted, established;

Unshakeable for as long as life lasts, in the Good Teaching well proclaimed.

37.

"'Having done wholesome by body, much wholesome by speech;

Having done wholesome by mind, non-affliction, without clinging.

38.

"'Then having made much merit leading to acquisition, through giving;

Establish other mortals too in the Good Teaching, in the holy life.'

39.

"With this compassion, when the gods knew the god;

They give thanks to the one passing away: 'Come, god, again and again.'

40.

"There was spiritual urgency in me then, when the assembly of gods had gathered;

To what realm of rebirth indeed shall I go, passed away from here?"

41.

"Having understood my anxiety, the ascetic with developed faculties;

Wishing to uplift me, he came to my presence.

42.

"Sumana by name, a disciple of Padumuttara;

Having instructed in the meaning and the teaching, he stirred me then.

43.

"Having heard his word, I placed confidence in the Buddha;

Having paid respect to that wise one, there I deceased.

44.

"I was reborn right there, urged on by wholesome root;

For a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.

45.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekacintika spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Ekacintika is the seventh.

8.

The Life History of the Elder Tikaṇṇipupphiya

46.

"Being become a god, honoured by the nymphs;

Having remembered my former action, I recollected the foremost Buddha.

47.

"Having held up a tikaṇṇi flower, I gladdened my own mind;

I placed it upon the Buddha, Vipassī, the lord of men.

48.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

49.

"Seventy-three cosmic cycles from now, there were four excellent kings;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

50.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tikaṇṇipupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Tikaṇṇipupphiya is the eighth.

9.

The Life History of the Elder Ekacāriya

51.

"Among the Tāvatiṃsa gods, a great roar then arose;

The Buddha is extinguished in the world, and we are still with lust.

52.

"For those in whom religious emotion had arisen, who were endowed with the dart of sorrow;

Supported by Sabala, I went to the presence of the Buddha.

53.

Having taken a mandārava flower, created by the rehearsal;

At the time of final Nibbāna, I placed it upon the Buddha.

54.

"All the gods gave thanks, and the nymphs to me then;

For a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.

55.

"Sixty thousand cosmic cycles from now, sixteen of those people;

Named Mahāmallajana, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

56.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekacāriyo spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Ekacāriya is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Tivaṇṭipupphiya

57.

"They all, having come together, fret over me as overpowered;

As they were fretting, fever arose in them.

58.

"Sunanda by name, a disciple of the Buddha then;

Of the sage who sees the Dhamma, came to my presence.

59.

"Those who were my bound companions, they gave me flowers then;

Having taken those flowers, I placed them upon the disciples.

60.

"Having deceased there, I was reborn again;

In eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, I do not go to the nether world.

61.

"Thirteen hundred cosmic cycles ago, there were comets;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

62.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."
Thus the Venerable Elder Tivaṇṭipupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Tivaṇṭipupphiya is the tenth.

The Kuṭajapupphiya Chapter is the nineteenth.

Its summary:

Kuṭaja and Bandhujīvī, Koṭumbarika and Hatthiya;

Isimugga and Bodhi, Ekacintī and Tikaṇṇika;

Ekacārī and Tivaṇṭi, sixty-two verses have been proclaimed.
