The Life History of the Elder Umāpupphiya
1.
Seated in concentration, I saw the highest among men.
2.
All the flowers with one head, stalks upward, faces downward.
3.
By that confidence of mind, I was reborn in Tusita.
4.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.
5.
Named Samantachadana, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.
6.
The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.
Thus the Venerable Elder Umāpupphiya spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Flax Flower is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Pulinapūjaka

Shining like the healing star, the lord of men radiating light.
8.
I praised the Teacher, I pleased him by my own action.
9.
Having taken it in my lap, for Vipassī, the great sage.
10.
In the day residence I sprinkled, for the lord of bipeds, such a one.
11.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the sand.
12.
Thus the Venerable Elder Pulinapūjaka spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Sand-Worshipper is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Hāsajanaka

Having raised my joined palms, it was uttered by me repeatedly.
14.
Having raised my joined palms, I gladdened my mind even more.
15.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of perception of the Buddha.
16.
"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."
Thus the Venerable Elder Hāsajanaka spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Joy-Producer is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Yaññasāmika

I upheld the family duty, the sacrifice was encouraged by me.
18.
Brought to the post and pillar, prepared for the sacrifice.
19.
Like the rising sun, like the full moon.
20.
The Fully Self-Enlightened One, having approached, spoke these words.
21.
And abstinence from theft and from sexual misconduct, and from drinking intoxicants.
22.
In the present life and in the hereafter, these qualities are praiseworthy.
23.
Having gladdened the mind in the Buddha, develop the highest path.'
24.
Having thus instructed me, rose up and went into the sky.
25.
By that confidence of mind, I was reborn in Tusita.
26.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of perception of the Buddha.
27.
Thus the Venerable Elder Yaññasāmika spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Sacrifice-Master is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Nimittasaññaka

I saw a golden deer, roaming in the forest.
29.
By that confidence of mind, I recollected other Buddhas.
30.
Just so they shine, those three, like the king of beasts.
31.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of perception of the Buddha.
32.
Araññasattha by name, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.
33.
Thus the Venerable Elder Nimittasaññaka spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Sign-Perceiver is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Annasaṃsāvaka

Resembling a golden flame, with the thirty-two excellent characteristics.
35.
Having led past the self-enlightened one, I fed that great sage.
36.
Having gladdened my mind in the Buddha, I rejoiced in heaven for a cosmic cycle.
37.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving almsfood.
38.
Thus the Venerable Elder Annasaṃsāvaka spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Food-Proclaimer is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Nigguṇḍipupphiya
39.
Three sounds emanate, of the gods giving thanks.
40.
Having become a human being, in the Good Teaching, obtain unsurpassed faith.
41.
Unshakeable for as long as life lasts, in the Good Teaching well proclaimed.
42.
Having done wholesome by mind, non-affliction, without clinging.
43.
Establish other mortals too in the Good Teaching, in the holy life.'
44.
They give thanks to the one passing away: 'Come, god, again and again.'
45.
To what realm of rebirth indeed shall I go, passed away from here?"
46.
Wishing to uplift me, he came to my presence.
47.
Having instructed in the meaning and the teaching, he stirred me then.
The twelfth recitation section.

Having paid respect to that wise one, there I deceased.
49.
Dwelling in my mother's womb, my mother bears me again.
50.
In between here I do not see displeasure in me then.
51.
Having come out from the womb, I did not know dark and bright.
52.
Of the Blessed One Gotama, the Sakyan son, such a one.
53.
I saw there monks complying with the Teacher's teaching.
54.
By a chariot yoked with elephants, he approached the highest enlightenment.
Having raised my joined palms, I went to the assembly.
56.
He who attended upon the Buddha, the disciple named Ānanda.
57.
Gladdening the king's mind, the one of great radiance handed over.
58.
Standing right there, being peaceful, I attained arahantship.
59.
Having paid respect to the self-enlightened, I uttered these words.
60.
Having held up a nigguṇḍī flower, I placed it on the lion's seat.
61.
I have attained the unshakeable state, having abandoned victory and defeat."
Abbudas and nirabbudas, eight by eight warriors stood.
63.
Thus the Venerable Elder Nigguṇḍipupphiya spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Vitex Flower is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Sumanāveḷiya
64.
All people, having assembled together, made a great offering to him.
65.
In front of the lion's seat, I placed them then.
66.
By whom was this flower venerated, for the Buddha, the foremost, such a one.
67.
I experience my own action, well done by myself in the past.
68.
I am dear to all of them, this is the fruit of flower-offering.
69.
Reviling of the restrained austere ascetics, done by me.
70.
I am venerated by all, this is the fruit of not reviling.
71.
Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.
72.
Thus the Venerable Elder Sumanāveḷiya spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Jasmine Garland is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Pupphacchattiya
73.
Who was proclaiming the truth, who was extinguishing living beings.
74.
Having made an umbrella of the flower, I placed it upon the Buddha.
75.
The Teacher, standing in the community of monks, spoke this verse.
76.
By that confidence of mind, he does not go to an unfortunate realm.'
77.
Having dismissed the assembly, rose up into the sky.
78.
In front of the Buddha, the foremost, goes the excellent umbrella.
79.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the flower umbrella.
80.
Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.
81.
Thus the Venerable Elder Pupphacchatiya spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Flower Umbrella is the ninth.

The Life History of the Elder Saparivārachattadāyaka
82.
He rains down the rain of the Teaching, like a rain of water in space.
83.
Having gladdened my own mind, I went to my own house.
84.
Joyful, with a joyful mind, into space I raised it.
85.
Having approached the self-enlightened, he stood firmly on the top of his head.
86.
Having sat down in the community of monks, he spoke these verses.
87.
By that confidence of mind, he does not go to an unfortunate realm.
88.
And thirty-two times as a king, he will be a universal monarch.
89.
Gotama by name, by clan, the Teacher in the world will be.
90.
Having fully understood all mental corruptions, he will attain nibbāna, without mental corruptions.'
91.
With a confident mind, glad at heart, I generate even more joy.
92.
My excellent mansion, risen up and delightful.
93.
Then I gained perception, this is the fruit of past action.
94.
Thirty-six times a wheel-turning monarch, from seven hundred cosmic cycles ago.
95.
Having transmigrated gradually, I came again to the human realm.
96.
Seven years old by birth, I went forth into homelessness.
97.
Having taken a crystal umbrella, he then for the foremost disciple.
98.
Having heard his thanksgiving, I remembered my former deed.
99.
Having remembered my former action, I attained arahantship.
100.
Having paid respect to the self-enlightened, I uttered these words.
101.
Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations.
102.
With both hands he held it up, the self-become one, the foremost person.
103.
Through the gift of a single umbrella, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.
104.
Having fully understood all mental corruptions, I dwell without mental corruptions.
105.
Thus the Venerable Elder Saparivārachattadāyaka spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Umbrella-with-Retinue-Giver is the tenth.
