The Chapter on Sakacittaniya

1.

The Life History of the Elder Sakacintaniya

1.

"Having seen the forest wilds, with little sound and undisturbed;

Frequented by sages, the receiver of oblations.

2.

"Having made a monument of sand, I sprinkled it with various flowers;

As if face to face with the self-enlightened, I venerated the created one.

3.

"Endowed with the seven treasures, a king, lord in the realm;

Satisfied by my own actions, this is the fruit of flower-offering.

4.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I offered the flower;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of flower-offering.

5.

"For eighty cosmic cycles, with boundless fame, I was a universal monarch;

Endowed with the seven treasures, lord of the four continents.

6.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sakacintaniya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Self-Reflection is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Avopupphiya

"Having gone forth from the dwelling, having risen up on the walking path;

Making known the four truths, he teaches the Deathless state.

8.

"Having understood the word of Sikhī, the Buddha, the foremost, such a one;

Having taken various flowers, I sprinkled them in the sky.

9.

"By that action, lord of bipeds, eldest of the world, bull among men;

I have attained the unshakeable state, having abandoned victory and defeat.

10.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of flower-offering.

11.

"Twenty cosmic cycles from now, a warrior named Sumedha;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

12.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Avopupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Avopupphiya is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Paccāgamaniya

13.

"On the bank of the river Sindhu, I was a ruddy goose then;

Feeding on pure moss, and well-restrained in evil deeds.

14.

"I saw the stainless Buddha, going through the sky-path;

Having held up a sal flower with my beak, I offered it to Vipassī.

15.

"One whose faith in the Tathāgata is unshakeable and well established;

By that confidence of mind, he does not go to an unfortunate realm.

16.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, in the presence of the Buddha, the foremost;

By a peaceful bird, a good seed was planted by me.

17.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I offered the flower;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

18.

"Named Sucārudassana, these eight having the same name;

In seventeen cosmic cycles they were wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

19.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Paccāgamaniya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Returner is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Parappasādaka

20.

"The bull, the excellent, the hero, the great sage, the victorious;

The golden-coloured self-enlightened one, who, having seen him, is not pleased?

21.

"Immeasurable like the Himalayas, hard to cross like the ocean;

So too is the Buddha's meditative absorption, who, having seen it, is not pleased?

22.

"Just as the earth is immeasurable, adorned with forest wreaths;

So too is the Buddha's morality, who, having seen it, is not pleased?

23.

"Unobstructed by wind or dust, just as space is immeasurable;

So too is the Buddha's knowledge, who, having seen it, is not pleased?"

24.

"With these four verses, the brahmin named Sena;

Having praised the foremost Buddha, Siddhattha, the unconquered.

25.

"For ninety-four cosmic cycles, you were not reborn in an unfortunate realm;

You experienced no small amount of the fortunate realm and the achievement of happiness.

26.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, having praised the leader of the world;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of praise.

27.

"In the fourteenth cosmic cycle, four arose;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

28.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Parappasādaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Inspiring-Confidence-in-Others is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Bhisadāyaka

29.

"Vessabhū by name, he was the third of the sages;

Having entered the forest grove, the highest of men dwelt.

30.

"Having taken lotus roots and fibres, I went to the presence of the Buddha;

And that I gave to the Buddha, devoted, with my own hands.

31.

"And touched by the hand of Vessabhū, the one of supreme intelligence;

I do not know of happiness equal to that, how much less surpassing it.

32.

"The final existence goes on for me, all existences have been uprooted;

By a peaceful noble elephant, wholesome merit was planted by me.

33.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving lotus roots.

34.

"And in combination, sixteen kings, lords of men;

In the fourteenth cosmic cycle they were wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

35.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bhisadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Lotus-Root-Donor is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Sucintita

"I was a roamer in mountain fastnesses, well-born like a lion;

Having killed herds of deer, I live in the mountain caves.

37.

"The Blessed One Atthadassī, omniscient, the best of speakers;

Wishing to uplift me, he came to the highest mountain.

38.

"Having killed a pasada deer, I approached to eat;

The Blessed One at that time, begging alms, approached.

39.

"Having held up excellent meats, I gave them to that Teacher;

The great hero gave thanks, extinguishing me then.

40.

"By that confidence of mind, I entered the mountain fortress;

Having aroused joy, there I deceased.

41.

"By this gift of meat, and by the aspirations of the mind;

For fifteen hundred cosmic cycles, I delighted in the heavenly world.

42.

"In the remaining cosmic cycles, wholesome was thought by me;

By that very gift of meat, and by the recollection of the Buddha.

43.

"In the thirty-eighth cosmic cycle, eight named Dīghāyu;

Sixty hundred cosmic cycles from now, two named Varuṇa.

44.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sucintita spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Well-Considered is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Vatthadāyaka

45.

"Born as a bird then I was, a supaṇṇa, lord of the garuḷas;

I saw the stainless Buddha, going to Gandhamādana.

46.

"Having abandoned the form of a harpy, I assumed the form of a young man;

One cloth was given by me, to the lord of bipeds, such a one.

47.

"And having accepted that cloth, the Buddha, the chief leader of the world;

The Teacher, standing in the sky, spoke these verses.

48.

"'By this gift of cloth, and by the aspirations of the mind;

Having abandoned the realm of the garuḷa, he will delight in the heavenly world.'

49.

"The Blessed One Atthadassī, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Having praised the gift of cloth, departed facing north.

50.

"When arising in existence, I have accomplishment of garments;

There is a covering in space, this is the fruit of giving cloth.

51.

"Seven people named Aruṇavā, wheel-turning monarchs of great power;

In the thirty-sixth cosmic cycle, they were lords of men.

52.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Vatthadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Cloth-Donor is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Ambadāyaka

53.

"The Blessed One Anomadassī, seated in the mountain caves;

Pervaded the world with friendliness, the immeasurable, without clinging.

54.

"I was a monkey then, in the Himalayas, the best of mountains;

Having seen Anomadassī, I placed confidence in the Buddha.

55.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there were fruiting mango trees then;

From there, having taken a ripe one, I gave a mango with honey.

56.

"The Buddha explained that to me, Anomadassī, the great sage;

By this gift of honey, and by the gift of mangoes, both.

57.

"For fifty-seven cosmic cycles, he will delight in the heavenly world;

In the remaining cosmic cycles, mixed up he will wander in the round of rebirths.

58.

"Having exhausted evil action, with ripened higher intelligence;

Not having gone to the nether world, he will burn up the defilements.

59.

"By the highest self-control I have been tamed by the great sage;

I have attained the unshakeable state, having abandoned victory and defeat.

60.

"In seventy-seven hundred cosmic cycles, those named after Ambaṭṭha;

Fourteen were those kings, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

61.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ambadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Mango-Donor is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Sumana

62.

"Sumana by name, I was then a garland-maker;

I saw the stainless Buddha, the receiver of the world's offerings.

63.

"Having held up with both hands, the jasmine flower, the highest;

I placed it upon the Buddha, Sikhi, the kinsman of the world.

64.

"By this flower offering, and by volition and aspirations;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

65.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

66.

"In the twenty-sixth cosmic cycle, four were of great fame;

Accomplished with the seven jewels, kings, universal monarchs.

67.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sumana spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Sumana is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Pupphacaṅkoṭiya

68.

Like a fearless lion, like the chief of birds, the Garuḷa;

Like an excellent bull-tiger, like a well-born maned lion.

69.

"Sikhī, the refuge of the three worlds, without longing, unconquered;

Seated, the foremost of ascetics, honoured by the community of monks.

70.

"Having placed in a basket the anoja flower, the highest;

Together with the basket itself, I sprinkled the foremost Buddha.

71.

"By that confidence of mind, lord of bipeds, bull among men;

I have attained the unshakeable state, having abandoned victory and defeat.

72.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

73.

"In the full thirty cosmic cycles, named Devabhūti;

Accomplished with the seven jewels, five were universal monarchs.

74.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Pupphacaṅkoṭiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Flower-Basket is the tenth.

The Chapter on Self-Reflection is the seventh.

Its summary:

Sakacintī, Avopupphī, and with Sapaccāgamana;

Parappasādī, Bhisada, Sucintī, Vatthadāyaka.

Ambadāyī and Sumana, and also Pupphacaṅkoṭakī;

Seventy-one verses spoken, counted by those intent upon the good.
