The Chapter on Udakāsana

1.

The Life History of the Elder Udakāsanadāyaka

1.

"Having gone out from the monastery door, I spread out a plank;

And I attended with water, for the attainment of the highest goal.

2.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of accusing about the seat.

3.

"Fifteen cosmic cycles from now, named Abhisāmasama;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

4.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Udakāsanadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Udakāsanadāyaka is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Bhājanapālaka

"In the city of Bandhumatī, I was a potter then;

I maintained vessels for the Community of monks at that very moment.

6.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, I maintained a vessel;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the vessel.

7.

"Fifty-three cosmic cycles ago from now, named Anantajāli;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

8.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bhājanapālaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Bhājanapālaka is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Sālapupphiya

"In the city of Aruṇavatī, I was a cake-seller then;

Going past my door, I saw Sikhi, the Victor.

10.

Having held up a bowl to the Buddha, I gave a sal flower;

To the Buddha who has come to the right path, with a clear mind.

11.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I gave;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the sal flower.

12.

"Fourteen cosmic cycles from now, I was one of boundless salutations;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

13.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sālapupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Sālapupphiya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Kilañjadāyaka

14.

"In the charming city of Tivarā, I was a basket-maker then;

When Siddhattha, the light of the world, the populace was devoted there.

15.

"For the purpose of honouring the Protector of the World, he was seeking a mat of rushes;

To those who were making an offering to the Buddha, I gave a mat of rushes.

16.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the mat of rushes.

17.

"In the seventy-seventh cosmic cycle, I was a king named Jaladdhara;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

18.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kilañjadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Kilañjadāyaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Vedikāraka

19.

"At the excellent Bodhi tree of the Blessed One Vipassī;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I had a railing built.

20.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, I had a railing built;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the railing.

21.

"Eleven cosmic cycles from now, I was one equal to the sun;

Possessed of the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

22.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Vedikāraka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Vedikāraka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Vaṇṇakāra

"In the city of Aruṇavatī, I was a dyer then;

At the shrine, cloth goods, of various colours I dyed.

24.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the colour that I dyed then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving colour.

25.

"Twenty-three cosmic cycles from now, one named Vaṇṇasama;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

26.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Vaṇṇakāra spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Vaṇṇakāra is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Piyālapupphiya

27.

"Formerly I was a deer hunter, in the forest grove;

Having seen a piyāla tree in bloom, I threw it on the path he had gone.

28.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

29.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Piyālapupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Piyālapupphiya is the seventh.

8.

The Life History of the Elder Ambayāgadāyaka

30.

"Not haughty in my own craft, I went to the forest;

Having seen the self-enlightened one going, I gave a mango offering.

31.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the mango sacrifice.

32.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ambayāgudāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Ambayāgadāyaka is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Jagatikāraka

33.

"When the Lord of the World was quenched, Atthadassī, the Highest of Men;

A platform was made by me, at the excellent stupa of the Buddha.

34.

"In eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the earth.

35.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Jagatikāraka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Jagatikāraka is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Vāsidāyaka

36.

"Formerly I was a blacksmith, in Tivarā, the best city;

One adze was given by me, to the Self-Become One, the unconquered.

37.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave the adze then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the gift of an adze.

38.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Vāsidāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Vāsidāyaka is the tenth.

The Chapter on Water-Seat is the twenty-fourth.

Its summary:

Water-seat-vessel, Sāla-flower, Mat-maker;

Railing, Dyer, and Piyāla-mango-gruel-giver;

Platform, Adze-giver, and thirty-eight verses.
