The Chapter on Ekapadumiya

1.

The Life History of the Elder Ekapadumiya

1.

"The Conqueror named Padumuttara, who has gone beyond all phenomena;

Making clear this or that existence, he helped many people to cross.

2.

"A king of swans I was then, the most excellent of birds was I;

Having plunged into a natural lake, I play the play of swans.

3.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

Above a natural lake, the Conqueror came at that very moment.

4.

"Having seen the god of gods, the Self-Become One, the leader of the world;

Having cut the lotus at the stalk, the hundred-petalled, delightful.

5.

"Having held up with my beak, devoted to the leader of the world;

Having lifted up in the sky, I venerated the foremost Buddha.

6.

"Padumuttara, knower of the world, the receiver of oblations;

The Teacher, standing in the sky, gave me thanksgiving.

7.

"'By this one lotus, and by volition and aspirations;

For a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, you do not go to the nether world.'

8.

Having said this, the Fully Self-Enlightened One, named after the best of lotuses,

Having praised my action, went where he wished.

9.

"A hundred thousand cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

10.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekapadumiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Ekapadumiya is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Tīṇuppalamāliya

11.

"On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was a monkey then;

I saw the stainless Buddha, seated in the mountain caves.

12.

"Illuminating all directions, like a fully blossomed king of sal trees;

Endowed with the marks and characteristics, having seen him, I was delighted.

13.

"Elated in mind, glad at heart, with joyful mind through rapture;

Three waterlily flowers, I placed upon his head.

14.

"Having planted flowers for Vipassī, the great sage;

Having become respectful, I departed facing north.

15.

Going along bowing down, with a clear mind;

Having fallen between the rocks, I reached the destruction of life.

16.

"By that well-done action, and by volition and aspirations;

Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa.

17.

"Three hundred times I exercised divine kingship;

Five hundred times I was a universal monarch.

18.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

19.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tīṇuppalamāliya spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Tīṇuppalamāliya is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Dhajadāyaka

20.

"Tissa was the Teacher, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Having seen the destruction of the three clingings, the flag was raised by me.

21.

"By that well-done action, and by volition and aspirations;

Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa.

22.

"Three hundred times I exercised divine kingship;

Five hundred times I was a universal monarch.

23.

"Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting;

I experience my own action, well done by myself in the past.

24.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving a banner.

25.

"If I wished, today, with its forests, with its mountains;

I could cover with linen cloth, this is the fruit of what was done by me.

26.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Dhajadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Dhajadāyaka is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Tikiṅkaṇipūjaka

27.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Bhūtagaṇa;

There I saw a rag-robe, stuck on a tree-top.

28.

"Having plucked three kiṅkaṇi flowers, I then;

Joyful, with a joyful mind, I venerated the rag-robe.

29.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the three flowers.

30.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tikiṅkaṇipūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Tikiṅkaṇipūjaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Naḷāgārika

31.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Hārita;

The self-become one named Nārada, a master dwelling at the root of a tree then.

32.

"Having made a hut of reeds, I covered it with grass;

Having cleared the walking path, I gave to the self-born one.

33.

"For fourteen cosmic cycles, I delighted in the heavenly world;

And seventy-four times, I exercised divine kingship.

34.

"Seventy-four times I was a universal monarch;

Principality over a district, extensive, incalculable by counting.

35.

"My dwelling is lofty, risen up like a rainbow;

With a thousand pillars, incomparable, a mansion with radiance.

36.

"Having experienced the two successes, urged on by wholesome root;

In the Dispensation of the Blessed One Gotama, I went forth.

37.

"With self resolute in striving, at peace, without clinging;

Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.

38.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Naḷāgārika spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Naḷāgārika is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Campakapupphiya

39.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Jāpala;

The Buddha named Sudassana dwelt in the mountain caves.

40.

"Having taken a golden flower, going through the sky I;

I saw the stainless Buddha, a crosser of the mental floods, without mental corruptions.

41.

"Seven champaka flowers, having placed upon my head then;

I placed upon the Buddha, the self-born great sage.

42.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

43.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Campakapupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Campaka Flower Offerer is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Padumapūjaka

44.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Romasa;

And a Buddha named Sambhava, dwelt in the open air then.

45.

"Having gone forth from the dwelling, I held a lotus;

Having held it for one day, I went again to the dwelling.

46.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I offered the flower;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

47.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Padumapūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Padumapūjaka is the seventh.

The thirteenth recitation section.

The Life History of the Elder Tiṇamuṭṭhidāyaka

48.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Lambaka;

The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Upatissa walked up and down in the open air.

49.

"I was then a deer hunter, in the forest grove;

Having seen that god of gods, the Self-Become One, the unconquered.

50.

"With a clear mind, then to that great sage;

For the purpose of sitting, I gave a handful of grass to the Buddha.

51.

Having given to the god of gods, I gladdened my mind even more;

Having paid respect to the self-enlightened, I departed facing north.

52.

"Not long after I had just gone, the king of beasts struck me;

Being struck by the lion, there I deceased.

53.

"The action done by me near the Buddha, the foremost one, without mental corruptions;

Well released like the speed of an arrow, I went to the heavenly world.

54.

"There was a beautiful sacrificial post, created by meritorious deeds;

With a thousand storeys, a hundred pinnacles, adorned with flags, made of green gold.

55.

"Radiance radiates from him, like the risen sun;

Crowded by heavenly maidens, I rejoiced, desiring sensual pleasures.

56.

"Having fallen away from the world of the gods, urged on by wholesome root;

Having come to human existence, I have attained the elimination of mental corruptions.

57.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, I gave a sitting cloth;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of a handful of grass.

58.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tiṇamuṭṭhidāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Tiṇamuṭṭhidāyaka is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Tindukaphaladāyaka

59.

"Shining like a kaṇikāra tree, seated in the mountain caves;

I saw the stainless Buddha, a crosser of the mental floods, without mental corruptions.

60.

"Having seen a fruitful tinduka tree, having broken open its sheath;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I gave to the self-born one.

61.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the fruit that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving fruit.

62.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tindukaphaladāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Tindukaphaladāyaka is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Ekañjaliya

63.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Romasa, dwelt on the river bank then;

I saw the stainless Buddha, like the luminous sun with golden rays.

64.

Like one heated at the mouth of a forge, resembling embers of acacia wood;

Shining like the healing star, I made a single salutation with joined palms.

65.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I made the salutation with joined palms;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the salutation with joined palms.

66.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekañjaliya spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Ekañjaliya is the tenth.

The Ekapadumiya chapter is the thirty-fifth.

Its summary:

Padumī, Uppalamālī, Dhaja, Kiṅkaṇika, Naḷa;

Campaka, Paduma, Muṭṭhi, Tinduka, Ekañjalī likewise;

Sixty-six verses, counted by the wise.
