The Chapter on Ārakkhadāyaka

1.

The Life History of the Elder Ārakkhadāyaka

1.

"For the sage who sees the Dhamma, a fence was caused to be made by me;

And protection was given by me, to the lord of bipeds, such a one.

2.

"In eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, the action which I did then;

By that distinction of action, the elimination of mental corruptions has been attained by me.

3.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ārakkhadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Protection-Giver is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Bhojanadāyaka

"Well-born like a young Sal tree, risen up like a Sobhañjana tree;

Like Indra's banner in the sky, the Conqueror always shines brilliantly.

5.

"To that god of gods, Vessabhū, the great sage;

I gave food, with a clear mind.

6.

"The Buddha, the self-become one, the unconquered, gave thanks for that to me;

When arising in existence, may the fruit arise for you.

7.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of food.

8.

"Twenty-five cosmic cycles ago from now, I was the sole one without enemies;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

9.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bhojanadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Food-Giver is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Gatasaññaka

"Just as in space there is no track, in the sky, the wind-path;

I saw Siddhattha, the conqueror, going in the celestial courtyard.

11.

"Having seen the robe of the Fully Self-Enlightened One stirred by the wind;

Joy was mine at that very moment, having seen the sage walking.

12.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I obtained that perception then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of perception of the Buddha.

13.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Gatasaññaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Perceiver of the Gone is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Sattapadumiya

14.

"I dwelt on the river bank, a brahmin named Nesāda;

Having swept the hermitage with lotus flowers.

15.

"The golden-coloured self-enlightened one, Siddhattha, the leader of the world;

Having seen him going through the sky, joy arose in me.

16.

"Having gone out to meet the Self-enlightened One, the elder of the world, the lord of men;

Having led him past the hermitage, I scattered the finest water-born flowers upon him.

17.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

18.

"Seven cosmic cycles from now, four excellent in lineage;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

19.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sattapadumiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Seven Lotuses is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Pupphāsanadāyaka

20.

"The golden-coloured self-enlightened one, like the luminous sun with golden rays;

Going not far away, Siddhattha, the unconquered.

21.

"Having gone out to meet him, having led him into the hermitage;

A flower seat was given by me, with a clear mind.

22.

"Having raised my joined palms, filled with joy then I;

Having gladdened my mind in the Buddha, I diverted that action.

23.

"Whatever merit I have made, in the Self-become One who conquered Māra;

By all that wholesome deed, may I be spotless in the Dispensation.

24.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, I gave a flower seat then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the flower seat.

25.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Pupphāsanadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Flower-Seat-Giver is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Āsanasanthavika

26.

"The highest shrine, by name, of Sikhi, the kinsman of the world;

In the forest, in the wilderness, in the wood, I wandered blindly then.

27.

"While coming out from the wilds, a lion's seat was seen by me;

Having arranged my upper robe on one shoulder and made salutation with joined palms, I praised the leader of the world.

28.

"Having praised for the daytime, the Buddha, the supreme leader of the world;

Joyful, with a joyful mind, I uttered these words.

29.

"'Homage to you, thoroughbred among men, homage to you, highest of men;

You are omniscient, O great hero, eldest of the world, bull among men.'

30.

Having praised Sikhi, by making a sign, I

Having paid respect to the seat, I departed facing north.

31.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I praised the best of speakers;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of praise.

32.

"Twenty-seven cosmic cycles ago from now, incomparable, seven were they;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

33.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Āsanasanthavika spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Seat-Spreader is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Saddasaññaka

34.

"Sudassana, the great hero, teaches the Deathless state;

Surrounded by disciples, he dwells in the excellent house.

35.

"With that sweet speech, he treats kindly the great multitude;

And the sound was extensive, a blessing among gods and humans.

36.

"Having heard the resounding sound of Siddhattha, the great sage;

Having gladdened my mind at the sound, I venerated the leader of the world.

37.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I obtained that perception then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of perception of the Buddha.

38.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Saddasaññaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Sound-Perceiver is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Tiraṃsiya

39.

"Like a well-born maned lion, like a mass of fire on a mountain;

Illuminating all directions, Siddhattha in the mountain caves.

40.

"Having seen the light of the sun, and likewise the light of the moon;

And having seen the light of the Buddha, joy arose in me.

41.

"Having seen the three lights, the Self-enlightened One and the best of disciples;

Having arranged my antelope skin on one shoulder, I praised the leader of the world.

42.

"For three are the light-makers, in the world dispelling the world's darkness;

The moon and the sun, and the Buddha, the leader of the world.

43.

"Having shown a simile, the great sage was praised by me;

Having praised the Buddha, I rejoiced in heaven for a cosmic cycle.

44.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I praised the Buddha;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of praising.

45.

"Sixty-one cosmic cycles from now, one bearer of knowledge was;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

46.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tiraṃsiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Three Rays is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Kandalipupphiya

47.

"On the bank of the river Sindhu, I was a farmer then;

Engaged in working for others, dependent on others' food.

48.

"While wandering along the Sindhu, I saw the Conqueror Siddhattha;

Seated in concentration, like a lotus in full bloom.

49.

"Seven kandali flowers, having cut them at the stalk, I then;

Placed upon the head, of the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.

50.

"The golden-coloured self-enlightened one, concentrated in favourable conditions;

An elephant in rut in three ways, like a tusker difficult to approach.

51.

"Having approached him, the prudent one with developed faculties;

Having raised my joined palms, I venerated the Teacher.

52.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

53.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kandalipupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Plantain Flower is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Kumudamāliya

54.

"The bull, the excellent, the hero, the great sage, the victorious;

Vipassī, the great hero, like a well-born maned lion.

55.

"Proceeding along the road, the receiver of oblations;

Having taken a garland of white water lilies, I sprinkled the foremost Buddha.

56.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

57.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kumudamāliya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder White Lily Garland is the tenth.

The Protection-Giver Chapter, the thirty-second.

Its summary:

Ārakkhada, Bhojanada, Gatasaññī, Padumiya;

Pupphāsanī, Santhavika, Saddasaññī, Tiraṃsiya;

Kandalika and Kumudī, fifty-seven verses.
