The Chapter on Thomaka

1.

The Life History of the Elder Thomaka

1.

"Standing in the heavenly world, being peaceful, of Vipassī, the great sage;

Having heard the Teaching, joyful, I spoke these words.

2.

"'Homage to you, thoroughbred among men, homage to you, highest of men;

You help many people cross over, teaching the Deathless state.'

3.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I spoke that speech then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of praise.

4.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Thomaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Thomaka is the first.

2.

The Life History of the Elder Ekāsanadāyaka

"Having abandoned the divine beauty, together with my wife I came here;

Wishing to make an aspiration, in the Dispensation of the Buddha, the foremost.

6.

"Devala by name, a disciple of Padumuttara;

To him almsfood was given by me, with a clear mind.

7.

"A hundred thousand cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of almsfood.

8.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekāsanadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Ekāsanadāyaka is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Citakapūjaka

9.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Ānanda, self-become, unconquered;

Attained final Nibbāna in the forest, in a grove inhabited by non-human spirits.

10.

"Having come here from the world of the gods, having made a pyre then;

I burnt the body there, and I made honour.

11.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

12.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Citakapūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Citakapūjaka is the third.

4.

The Life History of the Elder Ticampakapupphiya

13.

"Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Vikata;

In the middle of it dwells an ascetic with developed faculties.

14.

Having seen his peace, with a clear mind;

Having taken three champaka flowers, I sprinkled them.

15.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

16.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ticampakapupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Ticampakapupphiya is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Sattapāṭaliya

17.

"Shining like a kaṇikāra tree, seated in the mountain caves;

Seven trumpet-flower blossoms, upon the Buddha I placed.

18.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

19.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sattapāṭaliya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Sattapāṭaliya is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Upāhanadāyaka

"I was named Candana, the son of the Self-Enlightened One then;

A pair of sandals was given by me, bring about enlightenment for me, you.

21.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave a beverage vessel then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of sandals.

22.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Upāhanadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Upāhanadāyaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Mañjaripūjaka

23.

Having made a flower-bunch, I proceeded along the road;

I saw the foremost of ascetics, honoured by the community of monks.

24.

"With a confident mind, glad at heart, and with supreme rapture;

Having held up with both hands, I placed it upon the Buddha.

25.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of flower-offering.

26.

"Seventy-three cosmic cycles from now, I was the sole lord of the earth;

Jotiya by name, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

27.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Mañjaripūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Mañjaripūjaka is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Paṇṇadāyaka

28.

"On the Himalayan mountain, I was a wearer of bark garments;

I was one who ate unsalted leaves, and restrained in observances.

29.

"When the morning meal had not yet arrived, Siddhattha approached me;

That I gave to the Buddha, devoted, with my own hands.

30.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave leaves then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving leaves.

31.

"In the twenty-seventh cosmic cycle, I was a king with elephants;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

32.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Paṇṇadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Paṇṇadāyaka is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Kuṭidāyaka

33.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One, wandering in the forest, a master dwelling at the root of a tree then;

Having made a leaf-hut, I gave it to the unconquered one.

34.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave a leaf hut;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving a hut.

35.

"Twenty-eight cosmic cycles from now, sixteen were kings;

'Raining everywhere,' they were called, universal monarchs.

36.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kuṭidāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Kuṭidāyaka is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Aggapupphiya

37.

"The golden-coloured self-enlightened one, seated in the mountain caves;

Illuminating with rays, like Sikhi, like a fire.

38.

"Having taken a first-born flower, I approached the highest among men;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I placed it upon the Buddha.

39.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

40.

"Twenty-five cosmic cycles ago, he was of immeasurable going;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

41.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Aggapupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Aggapupphiya is the tenth.

The Thomaka Chapter is the twenty-sixth.

Its summary:

Thomaka, Ekāsana, Citaka, Campaka, Sattapāṭali;

Pāṇādhipati, Mañjarī, Paṇṇa, Kuṭidāyaka, Aggapupphiya;

The verses counted here are forty-one only.
