The Chapter on Saddasaññaka

1.

The Life History of the Elder Saddasaññaka

1.

"Formerly I was a deer hunter, in the forest grove;

There I saw the self-enlightened one, honoured by the host of gods.

2.

"Making known the four truths, lifting up the great multitude;

I heard the sweet speech, like the cry of the Indian cuckoo.

3.

"Of the sage with the voice of Brahma, Sikhi, the kinsman of the world;

Having gladdened my mind in his utterance, I have attained the elimination of mental corruptions.

4.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of confidence.

5.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Saddasaññaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Saddasaññaka is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Yavakalāpiya

"In the city of Aruṇavatī, I was a barley dealer then;

Having seen the Self-enlightened One on the road, I spread out a sheaf of barley.

"Compassionate and merciful, Sikhī, the chief leader of the world;

Having understood my thought, he sat down on a barley mat.

8.

"Having seen the spotless one seated, the great meditator, the guide;

Having generated gladness, there I deceased.

9.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the carpet-spreading.

10.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Yavakalāpiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Yavakalāpiya is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Kiṃsukapūjaka

11.

"Having seen a kiṃsuka tree in bloom, having raised my joined palms;

Having remembered the Buddha Siddhattha, I venerated him in space.

12.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

13.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kiṃsukapūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Kiṃsukapūjaka is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Sakosakakoraṇḍadāyaka

"Having seen the footprint trodden by Sikhi, the kinsman of the world;

Having arranged my antelope skin on one shoulder, I paid homage to the foremost footprint.

15.

"Having seen a koraṇḍa tree in bloom, a tree growing on the earth;

Having taken it with its buds, I venerated the wheel-marked footprint.

16.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the feet.

17.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sakosaka Koraṇḍadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Sakosakakoraṇḍadāyaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Daṇḍadāyaka

"Having entered the forest grove, having cut bamboo, I then;

Having made a support, I gave it to the Community.

19.

"By that confidence of mind, having paid respect to the one of good conduct;

Having given even a support, I departed facing north.

20.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave the walking stick then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving the walking stick.

21.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Daṇḍadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Daṇḍadāyaka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Ambayāgudāyaka

22.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Sataraṃsī, self-become, unconquered;

Having risen from concentration, he approached me for alms.

23.

"Having seen an Individually Enlightened One, I gave mango rice gruel;

To him of clear mind, with a clear heart.

24.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of mango rice gruel.

25.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ambayāgudāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Ambayāgudāyaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Supuṭakapūjaka

26.

"Having come out from the day residence, Vipassī, the leader of the world;

Wandering for alms, he approached my presence.

27.

"Thereupon delighted, glad at heart, to the Buddha, the foremost, such a one;

Having given a container of salt, I rejoiced in heaven for a cosmic cycle.

28.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave a basket;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the basket.

29.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Supuṭakapūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Supuṭakapūjaka is the seventh.

The Life History of the Elder Mañcadāyaka

30.

"To the Blessed One Vipassī, the foremost of the world, such a one;

One bed was given by me, with confidence, with my own hands.

31.

"Elephant vehicles, horse vehicles, divine vehicles I attained;

By that gift of a small bed, I have attained the elimination of mental corruptions.

32.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave a bed then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving a bed.

33.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Mañcadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Mañcadāyaka is the eighth.

9.

The Life History of the Elder Saraṇagamaniya

34.

"We boarded the boat then, a monk and a naked ascetic and I;

When the boat was breaking apart, the monk gave me refuge.

35.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when he gave me refuge;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of going for refuge.

36.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Saraṇagamaniya spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Saraṇagamaniya is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Piṇḍapātika

37.

"Tissa was the name of the Fully Self-Enlightened One, he dwelt in the forest then;

Having come here from Tusita, I gave almsfood.

38.

"Having paid respect to the Self-Enlightened One, Tissa by name, of great fame;

Having gladdened my own mind, I went to the Tusita heaven.

39.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of almsfood.

40.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Piṇḍapātika spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Piṇḍapātika is the tenth.

The Saddasaññaka chapter is the thirty-sixth.

Its summary:

Saddasaññī, Yavasika, Kiṃsuka, Koraṇḍapupphiya;

Ālambana, Ambayāgu, Supuṭī, Mañcadāyaka;

Saraṇa and Piṇḍapāta, and forty verses exactly.
