The Chapter on Bodhivandana

1.

The Life History of the Elder Bodhivandaka

1.

"Having seen a green trumpet-flower tree, a tree growing on the earth;

Having arranged my upper robe on one shoulder and made salutation with joined palms, I venerated the trumpet-flower tree.

2.

Having raised joined palms, having made the mind reverential;

Pure within, pure without, well liberated, without mental corruptions.

3.

"Vipassī, honoured by the world, an ocean of compassion and knowledge;

As if face to face with the self-enlightened, I venerated the trumpet-flower tree.

4.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I honoured the Bodhi tree;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of homage.

5.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bodhivandaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Bodhivandaka is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Pāṭalipupphiya

"The Blessed One named Vipassī, the self-become one, the foremost person;

Honoured by his pupils, the Conqueror entered Bandhuma.

7.

"Three trumpet-flower blossoms, placed on my lap;

Wishing to bathe my head, I went to the river ford.

8.

"Having gone forth from Bandhumatī, I saw the leader of the world;

Like a blazing blue water-lily, like a burning fire.

9.

Like an excellent bull-tiger, like a well-born maned lion;

Going, the foremost of ascetics, honoured by the community of monks.

10.

"Devoted to that Fortunate One, the washer of the stain of defilements;

Having taken three flowers, I venerated the foremost Buddha.

11.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

12.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Pāṭalipupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Pāṭalipupphiya is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Tīṇuppalamāliya

13.

"On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was a monkey then;

I saw the stainless Buddha, seated in the mountain caves.

14.

"Illuminating all directions, like a fully blossomed king of sal trees;

Endowed with the marks and characteristics, having seen him, I was delighted.

15.

"Elated in mind, glad at heart, with joyful mind through rapture;

Three waterlily flowers, I placed upon his head.

16.

"Having venerated with flowers the great sage Phussa,

Having become respectful, I departed facing north.

17.

Going along bowing down, with a clear mind;

Having fallen between the rocks, I reached the destruction of life.

18.

"By that well-done action, and by volition and aspirations;

Having abandoned the former birth, I went to Tāvatiṃsa.

19.

"Three hundred times I exercised divine kingship;

Five hundred times I was a universal monarch.

20.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

21.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tīṇuppalamāliya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Tīṇuppalamāliya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Paṭṭipupphiya

22.

"When the Fully Self-Enlightened One, the great sage Padumuttara, attained Nibbāna;

All the people having assembled, they carried out his body.

23.

"While the body was being carried out, while drums were being beaten;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I venerated with a paṭṭi flower.

24.

"A hundred thousand cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the body.

25.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, all existences have been uprooted;

Like an elephant having cut the bond, I dwell without mental corruptions.

26.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, my coming to the Buddha's presence;

The three true knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

27.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Paṭṭipupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Paṭṭipupphiya is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Sattapaṇṇiya

28.

"The Fully Self-Enlightened One named Sumana, the leader of the world, arose;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I made an offering of the Alstonia Scholaris tree.

29.

"A hundred thousand cosmic cycles ago, I made an offering of the Alstonia Scholaris tree;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Alstonia Scholaris tree.

30.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

31.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

32.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sattapaṇṇiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Sattapaṇṇiya is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Gandhamuṭṭhiya

33.

"When the funeral pyre was being prepared, with various odours heaped upon it;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I offered a handful of fragrance.

34.

"A hundred thousand cosmic cycles from now, the funeral pyre that I venerated;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the funeral pyre.

35.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

36.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

37.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Gandhamuṭṭhiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Gandhamuṭṭhiya is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Citakapūjaka

38.

When the Blessed One, named the best of lotuses, attained final Nibbāna;

When the funeral pyre was prepared, I made an offering of sal flowers.

39.

"A hundred thousand cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the funeral pyre.

40.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

41.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

42.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Citakapūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Citakapūjaka is the seventh.

8.

The Life History of the Elder Sumanatālavaṇṭiya

43.

"To the Blessed One Siddhattha, I gave a palm-leaf fan;

Covered with jasmine flowers, I hold this very precious gift.

44.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, I gave a palm-leaf fan;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the fan.

45.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

46.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

47.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sumanatālavaṇṭiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Sumanatālavaṇṭiya is the eighth.

9.

The Life History of the Elder Sumanadāmiya

48.

"Of the Blessed One Siddhattha, the one who has bathed, the austere ascetic;

Having made a jasmine garland, I held it, standing in front.

49.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the garland which I held then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of holding jasmine.

50.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

51.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

52.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sumanadāmiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Sumanadāmiya is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Kāsumāriphaladāyaka

53.

"Shining like a kaṇikāra tree, seated in the mountain caves;

I saw the stainless Buddha, the elder of the world, the lord of men.

54.

"With a confident mind, glad at heart, having made a salutation with joined palms at my head;

Having taken a wood-apple fruit, I gave it to the foremost Buddha.

55.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the fruit that I gave;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving fruit.

56.

"Mental defilements have been burnt by me, etc. I dwell without mental corruptions.

57.

"Indeed welcome it was for me, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.

58.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kāsumāriphala-dāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Kāsumāriphaladāyaka is the tenth.

The Bodhivandana Chapter is the thirty-eighth.

Its summary:

Bodhi, Pāṭali, Uppalī, Paṭṭi, and Sattapaṇṇiya;

Gandhamuṭṭhi and Citaka, Tāla, Sumanadāmaka;

And Kāsumāriphalī, fifty-nine verses.
