At Sāvatthī.
"I will teach you, monks, asceticism and the goal of asceticism.
Listen to that.
And what, monks, is asceticism?
It is just this noble eightfold path, as follows -
right view, etc.
right concentration.
This is called, monks, asceticism.
And what, monks, is the goal of asceticism?
That which, monks, is the elimination of lust, the elimination of hate, the elimination of delusion -
this is called, monks, the goal of asceticism."
