The Discourse on the Empty World

Then the Venerable Ānanda, etc.
he said this to the Blessed One -
"'Empty is the world, empty is the world', venerable sir, is said.
In what way, venerable sir, is it said 'the world is empty'?"
"Because, Ānanda, it is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self, therefore it is said 'the world is empty'.
And what, Ānanda, is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self?
The eye, Ānanda, is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self.
Forms are empty of a self or of what belongs to a self, eye-consciousness is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self, eye-contact is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self, etc.
whatever feeling arises with mind-contact as condition - whether pleasant or unpleasant or neither-unpleasant-nor-pleasant - that too is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self.
Because, Ānanda, it is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self, therefore it is said 'the world is empty'."
