The Discourse on One who Delights
144.
Thus have I heard -
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One;
having approached, he spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
"One who has children delights in children; likewise, one who has cattle delights in cattle.
Acquisitions truly are a man’s delight; for without acquisitions one does not delight."
"One who has children sorrows over children; likewise, one who has cattle sorrows over cattle.
Acquisitions truly are a man’s sorrows; for without acquisitions one does not sorrow."
Then Māra the Evil One, thinking "the Blessed One knows me, the Fortunate One knows me", afflicted and unhappy, disappeared right there.
