"There are, monks, these ten mental fetters.
What are the ten?
Five lower mental fetters, five higher mental fetters.
What are the five lower mental fetters?
Identity view, sceptical doubt, adherence to moral rules and austerities, sensual desire, anger -
these are the five lower mental fetters.
"What are the five higher mental fetters? Lust for fine-material existence, lust for immaterial existence, conceit, restlessness, ignorance - these are the five higher mental fetters. These, monks, are the ten mental fetters." The third.
