Thus have I heard -
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha on the Vulture's Peak mountain, not long after Devadatta had departed.
Then Brahmā Sahampati, when the night was far advanced, with surpassing beauty, having illuminated almost the entire Vulture's Peak mountain, approached the Blessed One;
having approached, he paid respect to the Blessed One and stood to one side.
Standing to one side, Brahmā Sahampati, referring to Devadatta, spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One -
"Fruit indeed kills the plantain, fruit the bamboo, fruit the reed;
Honour kills a contemptible person, as the embryo kills the mule."
