The Discourse on Dāmali
86.
At Sāvatthī.
Then Dāmali the young god, when the night was far advanced, with surpassing beauty, having illuminated almost the entire Jeta's Grove, approached the Blessed One;
having approached, he paid respect to the Blessed One and stood to one side.
Standing to one side, Dāmali the young god spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
By the abandoning of sensual pleasures, by that he does not long for existence."
For a brahmin has performed his obligations.
He strives with all his limbs;
But having obtained a foothold, standing on dry ground,
He does not strive, for he has gone beyond.
For one who has eliminated the mental corruptions, prudent, a meditator;
Having reached the end of birth and death,
He does not strive, for he has gone beyond."
