Thus have I heard -
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
There the Blessed One addressed the monks thus:
"Monks."
"Venerable sir," those monks assented to the Blessed One.
The Blessed One said this:
"There are, monks, these five faculties. Which five? The faith faculty, the energy faculty, the mindfulness faculty, the concentration faculty, the wisdom faculty - these, monks, are the five faculties."

In how many ways do these five faculties become pure?
These five faculties become pure in fifteen ways.
For one avoiding faithless persons, for one associating with, keeping company with, and attending on faithful persons, for one reviewing inspiring discourses -
by these three ways the faith faculty becomes pure.
For one avoiding lazy persons, for one associating with, keeping company with, and attending on persons putting forth strenuous energy, for one reviewing the right strivings -
by these three ways the energy faculty becomes pure.
For one avoiding unmindful persons, for one associating with, keeping company with, and attending on mindful persons, for one reviewing the establishments of mindfulness -
by these three ways the mindfulness faculty becomes pure.
For one avoiding unconcentrated persons, for one associating with, keeping company with, and attending on concentrated persons, for one reviewing the meditative absorptions and deliverances -
by these three ways the concentration faculty becomes pure.
For one avoiding unwise persons, for one associating with, keeping company with, and attending on wise persons, for one reviewing the practice of profound knowledge -
by these three ways the wisdom faculty becomes pure.
Thus for one avoiding these five persons, for one associating with, keeping company with, and attending on five persons, for one reviewing five collections of discourses -
by these fifteen ways these five faculties become pure.
In how many ways are the five faculties developed, in how many ways is there development of the five faculties? In ten ways the five faculties are developed, in ten ways there is development of the five faculties. Abandoning faithlessness, one develops the faith faculty; developing the faith faculty, one abandons faithlessness; abandoning idleness, one develops the energy faculty; developing the energy faculty, one abandons idleness; abandoning negligence, one develops the mindfulness faculty; developing the mindfulness faculty, one abandons negligence; abandoning restlessness, one develops the concentration faculty; developing the concentration faculty, one abandons restlessness; abandoning ignorance, one develops the wisdom faculty; developing the wisdom faculty, one abandons ignorance. In these ten ways the five faculties are developed, in these ten ways there is development of the five faculties.
In how many ways are the five faculties developed and well developed? In ten ways the five faculties are developed and well developed. Because faithlessness has been abandoned, well abandoned, the faith faculty is developed and well developed; because the faith faculty has been developed and well developed, faithlessness is abandoned and well abandoned. Because idleness has been abandoned, well abandoned, the energy faculty is developed and well developed; because the energy faculty has been developed and well developed, idleness is abandoned and well abandoned. Because negligence has been abandoned, well abandoned, the mindfulness faculty is developed and well developed; because the mindfulness faculty has been developed and well developed, negligence is abandoned and well abandoned. Because restlessness has been abandoned, well abandoned, the concentration faculty is developed and well developed; because the concentration faculty has been developed and well developed, restlessness is abandoned and well abandoned. Because ignorance has been abandoned, the wisdom faculty is developed and well developed; because the wisdom faculty has been developed and well developed, ignorance is abandoned and well abandoned. In these ten ways the five faculties are developed and well developed.

In how many ways are the five faculties developed, in how many ways are the five faculties developed and well developed and tranquillised and well tranquillised?
In four ways the five faculties are developed, in four ways the five faculties are developed and well developed and tranquillised and well tranquillised.
At the moment of the path of stream-entry the five faculties are developed;
at the moment of the fruition of stream-entry the five faculties are developed and well developed and tranquillised and well tranquillised.
At the moment of the path of once-returning the five faculties are developed;
at the moment of the fruition of once-returning the five faculties are developed and well developed and tranquillised and well tranquillised.
At the moment of the path of non-returning the five faculties are developed;
at the moment of the fruition of non-returning the five faculties are developed and well developed and tranquillised and well tranquillised.
At the moment of the path of arahantship the five faculties are developed;
at the moment of the fruition of arahantship the five faculties are developed and well developed and tranquillised and well tranquillised.
Thus four path purifications, four fruition purifications, four eradication purifications, four cessation purifications.
By these four ways the five faculties are developed;
by these four ways the five faculties are developed and well developed and tranquillised and well tranquillised.
For how many persons is there development of the faculties; how many persons have developed faculties? For eight persons there is development of the faculties; three persons have developed faculties. For which eight persons is there development of the faculties? For the seven trainees and for the virtuous worldling - for these eight persons there is development of the faculties. Which three persons have developed faculties? Through hearing, a Buddha, a disciple of the Truth-finder, one who has eliminated the mental corruptions, has developed faculties; in the sense of being self-become, a Paccekabuddha has developed faculties; in the sense of being immeasurable, the Truth-finder, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One has developed faculties - these three persons have developed faculties. Thus for these eight persons there is development of the faculties; these three persons have developed faculties.
