Connected Discourses with Moggallāna

1-8.

Commentary on the First Meditative Absorption Question Discourse and Others

332-339. In the Moggallāna Connected Discourses, "accompanied by sensuality" means accompanied by the five mental hindrances. For when he had emerged from the first meditative absorption, the five mental hindrances presented themselves as peaceful. Therefore that first meditative absorption of his was called conducive to relinquishment. Having known that negligence, the Teacher gave the exhortation "do not be negligent." In the case of the second meditative absorption and so on too, the meaning should be understood by this very method. For here "accompanied by" is said only in the sense of accompanied by the object.

9.

Commentary on the Signless Question Discourse

340. "Signless concentration of mind" means this was said with reference to just the insight concentration that proceeds having abandoned the signs of permanence and so on. "My consciousness follows after signs" means thus, while dwelling with this abiding of insight concentration, when the insight knowledge was proceeding sharp and courageous. Just as for a person cutting a tree with a sharp hatchet, thinking "My hatchet is indeed carrying through well," looking at the hatchet's edge moment by moment, the function of cutting is not accomplished, so too for the elder, attachment arises regarding insight, thinking "My knowledge, having become courageous indeed, is carrying through." Then he was not able to accomplish the function of insight. With reference to that, it was said "my consciousness follows after signs." "Through inattention to all signs, having entered and dwelt in the signless concentration of mind" means through inattention to all signs of permanence, happiness and self, having entered and dwelt in the signless concentration of mind associated with insight meditation leading to emergence, having Nibbāna as object, the concentration of the higher path and fruition.

10-11.

Commentary on the Sakka Discourse and Others

341-342. "With unwavering confidence" means with unshakeable confidence. "In ten respects" means for ten reasons. "Surpass" means they overcome, they stand having gone beyond. The remainder is of manifest meaning everywhere.

The Commentary on the Moggallāna Connected Discourses is concluded.
