The Chapter on Conjunction
1.
The Treatise on the Yoked Together
1.
Thus have I heard -
On one occasion the Venerable Ānanda was dwelling at Kosambī in Ghosita's park.
There the Venerable Ānanda addressed the monks -
"Friends, monks."
"Friend," those monks assented to the Venerable Ānanda.
The Venerable Ānanda said this -
"Whoever indeed, friends, whether monk or nun, declares the attainment of arahantship in my presence, all of them do so by four paths, or by one or other of them. Which four?
"Here, friends, a monk develops insight meditation preceded by serenity meditation. For him developing insight meditation preceded by serenity meditation, the path arises. He practises, develops, and cultivates that path. For him practising, developing, and cultivating that path, the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.
"Furthermore, friends, a monk develops serenity meditation preceded by insight meditation. For him developing serenity meditation preceded by insight meditation, the path arises. He practises, develops, and cultivates that path. For him practising, developing, and cultivating that path, the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.
"Furthermore, friends, a monk develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction. For him developing serenity and insight meditation in conjunction, the path arises. He practises, develops, and cultivates that path. For him practising, developing, and cultivating that path, the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.
"Furthermore, friends, a monk's mind is seized by restlessness concerning the Teaching. There comes a time, friends, when that mind stands still internally, settles, becomes unified, becomes concentrated. For him the path arises. He practises, develops, and cultivates that path. For him practising, developing, and cultivating that path, the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.
"Whoever indeed, friends, whether monk or nun, declares the attainment of arahantship in my presence, all of them do so by these four paths, or by one or other of them."

Discourse Exposition
2.
How does one develop insight meditation preceded by serenity meditation?
By means of renunciation, unified focus of mind is non-distraction, concentration.
Therein, regarding the mental states arisen, insight in the meaning of observation as impermanent, insight in the meaning of observation as suffering, insight in the meaning of observation as non-self.
Thus first serenity, afterwards insight.
Therefore it is said -
"one develops insight meditation preceded by serenity meditation."
"Develops" means four kinds of development -
development in the meaning of not surpassing one another of mental states arisen therein, development in the meaning of one flavour of the faculties, development in the meaning of carrying along the energy appropriate to that, development in the meaning of repetition.
"The path arises" - how does the path arise? In the meaning of seeing, right view as path arises; in the meaning of fixing upon, right thought as path arises; in the meaning of discernment, right speech as path arises; in the meaning of origination, right action as path arises; in the meaning of cleansing, right livelihood as path arises; in the meaning of exertion, right effort as path arises; in the meaning of establishing, right mindfulness as path arises; in the meaning of non-distraction, right concentration as path arises - thus the path arises.
He practises, develops, and cultivates that path. "Practises" - how does one practise? Attending, one practises; knowing, one practises; seeing, one practises; reviewing, one practises; resolving the mind, one practises; resolving through faith, one practises; arousing energy, one practises; establishing mindfulness, one practises; concentrating the mind, one practises; understanding with wisdom, one practises; directly knowing what should be directly known, one practises; fully understanding what should be fully understood, one practises; abandoning what should be abandoned, one practises; developing what should be developed, one practises; realizing what should be realized, one practises - thus one practises.
"Develops" - how does one develop? Attending, one develops; knowing, one develops; seeing, one develops; reviewing, one develops; resolving the mind, one develops; resolving through faith, one develops; arousing energy, one develops; establishing mindfulness, one develops; concentrating the mind, one develops; understanding with wisdom, one develops; directly knowing what should be directly known, one develops; fully understanding what should be fully understood, one develops; abandoning what should be abandoned, one develops; developing what should be developed, one develops; realizing what should be realized, one develops - thus one develops.
"Cultivates" - how does one cultivate? Attending, one cultivates; knowing, one cultivates; seeing, one cultivates; reviewing, one cultivates; resolving the mind, one cultivates; resolving through faith, one cultivates; arousing energy, one cultivates; establishing mindfulness, one cultivates; concentrating the mind, one cultivates; understanding with wisdom, one cultivates; directly knowing what should be directly known, one cultivates; fully understanding what should be fully understood, one cultivates; abandoning what should be abandoned, one cultivates; developing what should be developed, one cultivates; realizing what should be realized, one cultivates - thus one cultivates.
For him practising, developing, and cultivating that path, the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end - how are the mental fetters abandoned, how do the underlying tendencies come to an end? By the path of stream-entry, identity view, sceptical doubt, adherence to moral rules and austerities - these three mental fetters are abandoned; the underlying tendency to wrong view, the underlying tendency to sceptical doubt - these two underlying tendencies come to an end. By the path of once-returning, the gross mental fetter of sensual lust, the mental fetter of aversion - these two mental fetters are abandoned; the gross underlying tendency to sensual lust, the underlying tendency to aversion - these two underlying tendencies come to an end. By the path of non-returning, the residual mental fetter of sensual lust, the mental fetter of aversion - these two mental fetters are abandoned; the residual underlying tendency to sensual lust, the underlying tendency to aversion - these two underlying tendencies come to an end. By the path of arahantship, lust for fine-material existence, lust for immaterial existence, conceit, restlessness, ignorance - these five mental fetters are abandoned; the underlying tendency to conceit, the underlying tendency to lust for existence, the underlying tendency to ignorance - these three underlying tendencies come to an end. Thus the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.
3.
By means of non-anger, unified focus of mind and non-distraction is concentration, etc.
By means of perception of light, unified focus of mind and non-distraction is concentration, etc.
Observing relinquishment by means of in-breath, observing relinquishment by means of out-breath, unified focus of mind and non-distraction is concentration.
In the meaning of seeing, right view as path arises; in the meaning of fixing upon, right thought as path arises, etc. In the meaning of non-distraction, right concentration as path arises. Thus the path arises.
He practises, develops, and cultivates that path. "Practises" - how does one practise? Attending, one practises, etc. Realizing what should be realized, one practises; thus one practises. "Develops" - how does one develop? Attending, one develops; knowing, one develops, etc. Realizing what should be realized, one develops; thus one develops. "Cultivates" - how does one cultivate? Attending, one cultivates; knowing, one cultivates, etc. Realizing what should be realized, one cultivates; thus one cultivates.
Thus one develops insight meditation preceded by serenity meditation.
4.
How does one develop serenity meditation preceded by insight meditation?
Insight in the sense of observation as impermanent, insight in the sense of observation as suffering, insight in the sense of observation as non-self.
Therein, for the mental states arisen, having release as object, unified focus of mind, non-distraction.
Concentration - thus first insight, afterwards serenity.
Therefore it is said -
"one develops serenity meditation preceded by insight meditation."
"Develops" means four kinds of development -
development in the meaning of practice, etc.
"the path arises" - how does the path arise? etc.
thus the path arises.
Thus the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.
Materiality - insight in the sense of observation as impermanent, materiality - insight in the sense of observation as suffering, materiality - insight in the sense of observation as non-self. Therein, for the mental states arisen, having release as object, unified focus of mind, non-distraction is concentration. Thus first insight, afterwards serenity. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity meditation preceded by insight meditation." "Develops" means four kinds of development - development in the meaning of practice, etc. "the path arises" - how does the path arise? etc. thus the path arises. Thus the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.
Feeling... etc. perception... activities... consciousness... the eye... etc. ageing and death - insight in the sense of observation as impermanent, ageing and death as suffering... etc. insight in the sense of observation as non-self. Thus one develops serenity meditation preceded by insight meditation.
5.
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction?
One develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction by sixteen aspects.
In the meaning of object, in the meaning of resort, in the meaning of abandoning, in the meaning of relinquishment, in the meaning of emergence, in the meaning of turning away, in the meaning of peaceful, in the meaning of sublime, in the meaning of liberated, in the meaning of without mental corruptions, in the meaning of crossing over, in the meaning of signless, in the meaning of desireless, in the meaning of emptiness, in the meaning of one flavour, in the meaning of not surpassing, in the meaning of conjunction.
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of object? For one abandoning restlessness, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, concentration has cessation as object; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation has cessation as object. Thus in the meaning of object, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become conjoined, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of object." "Develops" means four kinds of development - development in the meaning of practice, etc. "the path arises" - how does the path arise? etc. thus the path arises. Thus the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end. Thus one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of object.
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of resort? For one abandoning restlessness, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, concentration has cessation as resort; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation has cessation as resort. Thus in the meaning of resort, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become conjoined, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of resort."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of abandoning? For one abandoning the mental defilements accompanied by restlessness and the aggregates, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, concentration has cessation as resort; for one abandoning the mental defilements accompanied by ignorance and the aggregates, insight in the meaning of observation has cessation as resort. Thus in the meaning of abandoning, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become conjoined, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of abandoning."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of relinquishment? For one relinquishing the mental defilements accompanied by restlessness and the aggregates, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, concentration has cessation as resort; for one relinquishing the mental defilements accompanied by ignorance and the aggregates, insight in the meaning of observation has cessation as resort. Thus in the meaning of relinquishment, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become conjoined, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of relinquishment."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of emergence? For one emerging from mental defilements accompanied by restlessness and from aggregates, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, and concentration have cessation as their resort; for one emerging from mental defilements accompanied by ignorance and from aggregates, insight in the meaning of observation has cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of emergence, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of emergence."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of turning away? For one turning away from mental defilements accompanied by restlessness and from aggregates, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, and concentration have cessation as their resort; for one turning away from mental defilements accompanied by ignorance and from aggregates, insight in the meaning of observation has cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of turning away, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of turning away."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of peacefulness? For one abandoning restlessness, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, and concentration are peaceful, having cessation as their resort; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation is peaceful, having cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of peacefulness, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of peacefulness."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of sublimity? For one abandoning restlessness, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, and concentration are sublime, having cessation as their resort; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation is sublime, having cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of sublimity, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of sublimity."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of liberation? For one abandoning restlessness, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, and concentration are liberated from the mental corruption of sensuality, having cessation as their resort; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation is liberated from the mental corruption of ignorance, having cessation as its resort. Thus through the fading away of lust there is liberation of mind, through the fading away of ignorance there is wisdom; in the meaning of liberation, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of liberation."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of being without mental corruptions? For one abandoning restlessness, unified focus of mind, non-distraction, and concentration are without mental corruptions regarding the mental corruption of sensuality, having cessation as their resort; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation is without mental corruptions regarding the mental corruption of ignorance, having cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of being without mental corruptions, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of being without mental corruptions."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of crossing over? For one crossing over the mental defilements accompanied by restlessness and the aggregates, concentration that is unified focus of mind and non-distraction has cessation as its resort; for one crossing over the mental defilements accompanied by ignorance and the aggregates, insight in the meaning of observation has cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of crossing over, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not mutually surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of crossing over."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of signlessness? For one abandoning restlessness, concentration that is unified focus of mind and non-distraction becomes signless from all signs, having cessation as its resort; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation becomes signless from all signs, having cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of signlessness, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not mutually surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of signlessness."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of desirelessness? For one abandoning restlessness, concentration that is unified focus of mind and non-distraction becomes desireless from all aspirations, having cessation as its resort; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation becomes desireless from all aspirations, having cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of desirelessness, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not mutually surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of desirelessness."
How does one develop serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of emptiness? For one abandoning restlessness, concentration that is unified focus of mind and non-distraction becomes empty from all adherences, having cessation as its resort; for one abandoning ignorance, insight in the meaning of observation becomes empty from all adherences, having cessation as its resort. Thus in the meaning of emptiness, serenity and insight become of one flavour, become yoked together, do not mutually surpass one another. Therefore it is said - "one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of emptiness." "Develops" means four kinds of development - development in the meaning of practice, etc. "the path arises" - how does the path arise? etc. thus the path arises. Thus the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end. Thus one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction in the meaning of emptiness. By these sixteen aspects one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction; thus one develops serenity and insight meditation in conjunction.

Exposition on the Avoidance of Restlessness about Phenomena
6.
How is the mind seized by restlessness concerning the Teaching?
For one attending as impermanent, light arises; one reflects upon the light as "light is a mental state"; from that, distraction is restlessness.
With a mind seized by that restlessness, one does not understand as it really is the establishing as impermanent, does not understand as it really is the establishing as suffering, does not understand as it really is the establishing as non-self.
Therefore it is said -
"The mind is seized by restlessness concerning the Teaching. There comes a time when that mind stands still internally, settles, becomes unified, becomes concentrated.
For him the path arises." How does the path arise? Etc.
Thus the path arises, thus the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.
For one attending as impermanent, knowledge arises, rapture arises, tranquillity arises, happiness arises, decision arises, exertion arises, establishing arises, equanimity arises, attachment arises; one reflects upon the attachment as "attachment is a mental state". From that, distraction is restlessness. With a mind seized by that restlessness, one does not understand as it really is the establishing as impermanent, does not understand as it really is the establishing as suffering, does not understand as it really is the establishing as non-self. Therefore it is said - "The mind is seized by restlessness concerning the Teaching. There comes a time when that mind stands still internally, settles, becomes unified, becomes concentrated. For him the path arises." How does the path arise? Etc. Thus the path arises, thus the mental fetters are abandoned, the underlying tendencies come to an end.

From that, distraction is restlessness. With a mind seized by that restlessness. One does not understand as it really is the establishing of ageing and death as non-self. One does not understand as it really is the establishing of ageing and death as impermanent, does not understand as it really is the establishing of ageing and death as suffering. Therefore it is said - "The mind is seized by restlessness concerning the Teaching. There comes a time when that mind stands still internally, settles, becomes unified, becomes concentrated. Thus the mind is seized by restlessness concerning the Teaching.
Regarding tranquillity and happiness, by which the mind trembles.
And regarding adverting to equanimity, and regarding equanimity and attachment.
One becomes skilled in restlessness regarding phenomena, and does not go to confusion.
One is distracted but does not become defiled, meditative development declines.
And the mind is not distracted and does not become defiled, the development of mind does not pass away.
By these four grounds, one fully understands the ten states regarding the mind seized by contraction and distraction.
The Treatise on the Yoked Together is concluded.

The Treatise on Truth
8.
The earlier origin.
"Monks, there are these four things that are true, unerring, not otherwise.
What are the four?
'This is suffering', monks - this is true, this is unerring, this is not otherwise;
'This is the origin of suffering' - this is true, this is unerring, this is not otherwise; 'This is the cessation of suffering' - this is true, this is unerring, this is not otherwise; 'This is the practice leading to the cessation of suffering' - this is true, this is unerring, this is not otherwise.
These, monks, are the four things that are true, unerring, not otherwise."
1.
First Discourse Exposition
How is suffering truth in the meaning of being true? Four meanings of suffering as suffering are true, unerring, not otherwise. Suffering has the meaning of oppression, the meaning of conditioned, the meaning of torment, the meaning of change - these four meanings of suffering as suffering are true, unerring, not otherwise. Thus suffering is truth in the meaning of being true.
How is the origin truth in the meaning of being true? Four meanings of the origin as origin are true, unerring, not otherwise. The origin has the meaning of accumulation, the meaning of source, the meaning of bondage, the meaning of impediment - these four meanings of the origin as origin are true, unerring, not otherwise. Thus the origin is truth in the meaning of being true.
How is cessation truth in the meaning of being true? Four meanings of cessation as cessation are true, unerring, not otherwise. Cessation has the meaning of escape, the meaning of seclusion, the meaning of unconditioned, the meaning of deathlessness - these four meanings of cessation as cessation are true, unerring, not otherwise. Thus cessation is truth in the meaning of being true.
How is the path truth in the meaning of being true? Four meanings of the path as path are true, unerring, not otherwise. The path has the meaning of deliverance, the meaning of cause, the meaning of seeing, the meaning of authority - these four meanings of the path as path are true, unerring, not otherwise. Thus the path is truth in the meaning of being true.

How in the meaning of non-self... etc. in the meaning of truth... in the meaning of penetration... in the meaning of direct knowing... in the meaning of full understanding... in the meaning of phenomenon... in the meaning of being true... in the meaning of knowing... in the meaning of realization... in the meaning of touching... in the meaning of full realization are the four truths of single penetration? By sixteen ways in the meaning of full realization the four truths are of single penetration. Suffering has the meaning of oppression, the meaning of conditioned, the meaning of torment, the meaning of change, the meaning of full realization; the origin has the meaning of accumulation, the meaning of source, the meaning of bondage, the meaning of impediment, the meaning of full realization; cessation has the meaning of escape, the meaning of seclusion, the meaning of unconditioned, the meaning of deathlessness, the meaning of full realization; the path has the meaning of deliverance, the meaning of cause, the meaning of seeing, the meaning of authority, the meaning of full realization - by these sixteen ways in the meaning of full realization the four truths are included as one. What is included as one, that is unity. Unity is penetrated by one knowledge - the four truths are of single penetration.
12.
How many characteristics of the truths are there?
There are two characteristics of the truths.
The characteristic of the conditioned and the characteristic of the unconditioned -
these are the two characteristics of the truths.
How many characteristics of the truths are there? There are six characteristics of the truths. Of the conditioned truths, arising is evident, passing away is evident, change in their duration is evident; of the unconditioned truth, no arising is evident, no passing away is evident, no change in its duration is evident - these are the six characteristics of the truths.
How many characteristics of the truths are there? There are twelve characteristics of the truths. Of the truth of suffering, arising is evident, passing away is evident, change in its duration is evident. Of the truth of origin, arising is evident, passing away is evident, change in its duration is evident. Of the truth of the path, arising is evident, passing away is evident, change in its duration is evident. Of the truth of cessation, no arising is evident, no passing away is evident, no change in its duration is evident - these are the twelve characteristics of the truths.
Of the four truths, how many are wholesome, how many are unwholesome, how many are indeterminate? The truth of origin is unwholesome, the truth of the path is wholesome, the truth of cessation is indeterminate. The truth of suffering may be wholesome, may be unwholesome, may be indeterminate.
Could three truths be included in one truth, and one truth be included in three truths? By way of basis and by method, there could be. And how could there be? Whatever truth of suffering is unwholesome, the truth of origin is unwholesome - thus in the sense of unwholesome, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. Whatever truth of suffering is wholesome, the truth of the path is wholesome - thus in the sense of wholesome, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. Whatever truth of suffering is indeterminate, the truth of cessation is indeterminate - thus in the sense of indeterminate, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. Thus there could be three truths included in one truth, and one truth included in three truths, by way of basis and by method.

Second Discourse Pāḷi
13.
"Before the enlightenment, monks, while still unenlightened, being just a Bodhisatta, this occurred to me -
'What indeed is the gratification in matter, what is the danger, what is the escape?
What is the gratification in feeling, what is the danger, what is the escape?
What is the gratification in perception, what is the danger, what is the escape?
What is the gratification in activities, what is the danger, what is the escape?
What is the gratification in consciousness, what is the danger, what is the escape?'
This occurred to me, monks -
'Whatever happiness and pleasure arises dependent on matter -
this is the gratification of matter.
That matter is impermanent, suffering, subject to change -
this is the danger of matter.
Whatever is the removal of desire and lust, the abandoning of desire and lust regarding matter -
this is the escape from matter.
Whatever dependent on feeling, etc.
whatever perception dependent on...
whatever dependent on activities...
whatever happiness and pleasure arises dependent on consciousness -
this is the gratification in consciousness.
That consciousness is impermanent, suffering, subject to change -
this is the danger in consciousness.
Whatever is the removal of desire and lust, the abandoning of desire and lust regarding consciousness -
this is the escape from consciousness.'
"As long as I, monks, did not directly know as it really is the gratification of these five aggregates of clinging as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape, I did not acknowledge, monks, in the world with its gods, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, among the generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its gods and humans, that I had fully awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. But when I, monks, directly knew as it really is the gratification of these five aggregates of clinging as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape, then I acknowledged, monks, in the world with its gods, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, among the generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its gods and humans, that I had fully awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. And knowledge and vision arose in me - 'Unshakable is my liberation. This is the last birth, there is now no more rebirth.'"

At Sāvatthī.
There the Venerable Sāriputta addressed the monks:
"Friends, monks."
"Friend," those monks assented to the Venerable Sāriputta.
The Venerable Sāriputta said this -
"There are these seven factors of enlightenment, friends. Which seven? The enlightenment factor of mindfulness, the enlightenment factor of investigation of phenomena, etc. the enlightenment factor of equanimity - these, friends, are the seven factors of enlightenment. Of these seven factors of enlightenment, friends, with whatever factor of enlightenment I wish to dwell in the earlier period of the day, with that factor of enlightenment I dwell in the earlier period of the day. With whatever factor of enlightenment I wish to dwell in the noon period of the day, etc. to dwell in the afternoon period of the day, with that factor of enlightenment I dwell in the afternoon period of the day. If, friends, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness is thus for me, it is 'immeasurable' for me, it is 'thoroughly undertaken' for me. And when it remains I understand 'it remains.' If it passes away for me, I understand 'it passes away for me with this as condition.' The enlightenment factor of investigation of phenomena, etc. If, friends, the enlightenment factor of equanimity is thus for me, it is 'immeasurable' for me, it is 'thoroughly undertaken' for me. And when it remains I understand 'it remains.' If it passes away for me, I understand 'it passes away for me with this as condition.'
"Just as, friends, there might be a clothes-chest full of cloths of various colours belonging to a king or a king's chief minister. Whatever suit of garments he might wish to wear in the earlier period of the day, that very suit of garments he would wear in the earlier period of the day. Whatever suit of garments he might wish to wear in the noon period of the day, etc. to wear in the afternoon period of the day, that very suit of garments he would wear in the afternoon period of the day. Just so indeed, friends, of these seven factors of enlightenment, with whatever factor of enlightenment I wish to dwell in the earlier period of the day, with that factor of enlightenment I dwell in the earlier period of the day. And when it remains I understand 'it remains.' If it passes away for me, I understand 'it passes away for me with this as condition.' Etc. If, friends, the enlightenment factor of equanimity is thus for me, it is 'immeasurable' for me, it is 'thoroughly undertaken' for me. And when it remains I understand 'it remains.' If it passes away for me, I understand 'it passes away for me with this as condition.'"
Discourse Exposition
21.
How is the enlightenment factor of mindfulness thus for me a factor of enlightenment?
As far as cessation is attended to, so far is the enlightenment factor of mindfulness.
Thus for me it is a factor of enlightenment.
Just as when an oil lamp is burning, as far as there is flame so far there is colour, as far as there is colour so far there is flame.
Just so, as far as cessation is attended to, so far is the enlightenment factor of mindfulness.
Thus for me it is a factor of enlightenment.
How is it immeasurable thus for me a factor of enlightenment? Mental defilements are bound by measure, and all prepossessions, and whatever activities lead to rebirth - cessation is immeasurable in the meaning of unshakeable, in the meaning of unconditioned. As far as cessation is attended to, so far it is immeasurable. Thus for me it is a factor of enlightenment.
How is it thoroughly undertaken thus for me - a factor of enlightenment? Mental defilements are unrighteous, and all prepossessions, and whatever activities lead to rebirth - cessation is a righteous phenomenon in the meaning of peaceful, in the meaning of sublime. As far as cessation is attended to, so far it is thoroughly undertaken thus for me a factor of enlightenment.
How do I understand "when it remains, it remains"; if it passes away, I understand "it passes away with this as condition"? In how many ways does the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remain? In how many ways does the enlightenment factor of mindfulness pass away? In eight ways the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains. In eight ways the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away.
By which eight ways does the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remain? Because of attending to non-arising, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains; because of not attending to arising, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains; because of attending to non-occurrence, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains; because of not attending to occurrence, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains; because of attending to the signless, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains; because of not attending to sign, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains; because of attending to cessation, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains; because of not attending to activities, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains - by these eight ways the enlightenment factor of mindfulness remains.
By which eight ways does the enlightenment factor of mindfulness pass away? Because of attending to arising, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away; because of not attending to non-arising, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away; because of attending to occurrence, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away; because of not attending to non-occurrence, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away; because of attending to sign, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away; because of not attending to the signless, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away; because of attending to activities, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away; because of not attending to cessation, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away - by these eight ways the enlightenment factor of mindfulness passes away. Thus I understand "when it remains, it remains." If it passes away, I understand "it passes away for me with this as condition." Etc.
How is the enlightenment factor of equanimity thus for me a factor of enlightenment? As far as cessation is attended to, so far is the enlightenment factor of equanimity thus for me a factor of enlightenment. Just as when an oil lamp is burning, as far as there is flame so far there is colour, as far as there is colour so far there is flame. Just so, as far as cessation is attended to, so far is the enlightenment factor of equanimity thus a factor of enlightenment.
How is the factor of enlightenment immeasurable, if thus it is? Mental defilements are bound by measure, and all prepossessions, and whatever activities lead to rebirth - cessation is immeasurable in the meaning of unshakeable, in the meaning of unconditioned. As far as cessation is attended to, so far it is immeasurable, if thus it is - a factor of enlightenment.
How is the factor of enlightenment thoroughly undertaken, if thus it is? Mental defilements are unrighteous, and all prepossessions, and whatever activities leading to rebirth - cessation is a righteous phenomenon in the meaning of peaceful, in the meaning of sublime. As far as cessation is attended to, so far it is thoroughly undertaken, if thus it is - a factor of enlightenment.
How do I understand "when it remains, it remains"; and if it passes away, I understand "it passes away for me with this as condition"? In how many ways does the enlightenment factor of equanimity remain? In how many ways does the enlightenment factor of equanimity pass away? In eight ways the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains. In eight ways the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away.
By which eight ways does the enlightenment factor of equanimity remain? Because of having attended to non-arising, the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains; because of not having attended to arising, the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains; because of having attended to non-occurrence, the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains; because of not having attended to occurrence, the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains; because of having attended to the signless, the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains; because of not having attended to sign, the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains; because of having attended to cessation, the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains; because of not having attended to activities, the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains - by these eight ways the enlightenment factor of equanimity remains.
By which eight ways does the enlightenment factor of equanimity pass away? Because of having attended to arising, the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away; because of not having attended to non-arising, the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away; because of having attended to occurrence, the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away; because of not having attended to non-occurrence, the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away; because of having attended to sign, the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away; because of not having attended to the signless, the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away; because of having attended to activities, the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away; because of not having attended to cessation, the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away - by these eight ways the enlightenment factor of equanimity passes away. Thus I understand "and when it remains, it remains"; and if it passes away, I understand "it passes away for me with this as condition."
The Treatise on the Factors of Enlightenment is concluded.

At Sāvatthī.
"Monks, when the liberation of mind through friendliness has been practised, developed, cultivated, mastered, made a basis of, practised, accumulated, and thoroughly undertaken, eleven benefits are to be expected.
What are the eleven?
One sleeps pleasantly, one wakes up pleasantly, one does not see evil dreams, one is dear to human beings, one is dear to non-human beings, deities protect one, neither fire nor poison nor weapon affects one, the mind quickly becomes concentrated, one's complexion becomes bright, one dies undeluded, if not penetrating further one is reborn in the Brahma world.

Dispassion is the path, liberation is the fruit.
How is dispassion the path?
At the moment of the path of stream-entry, right view in the meaning of seeing becomes dispassionate towards wrong view, becomes dispassionate towards mental defilements that follow it and towards aggregates, and becomes dispassionate externally towards all signs.
Dispassion has dispassion as its object, has dispassion as its domain, has arisen in dispassion, is stable in dispassion, is established in dispassion.
"Dispassion" - there are two kinds of dispassion - Nibbāna is dispassion, and whatever mental states arise with Nibbāna as their object, all are dispassion - dispassion. The seven factors that are conascent go to dispassion - dispassion is the path. By this path, Buddhas and disciples go to Nibbāna, the untravelled direction - the eightfold path. As far as there are paths of the various ascetics and brahmins of other doctrines, this noble eightfold path alone is the foremost and the best and the chief and the highest and the most excellent - of paths, the eightfold is foremost.
Right thought in the meaning of fixing upon becomes dispassionate towards wrong thought. Right speech in the meaning of discernment becomes dispassionate towards wrong speech. Treatise on Analytical Knowledge

Section on the Turning of the Wheel of the Teaching
30.
Thus have I heard -
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Bārāṇasī in the Deer Park at Isipatana.
There the Blessed One addressed the group of five monks -
"There are these two extremes, monks, that should not be cultivated by one who has gone forth. Which two? That which is the pursuit of sensual happiness in sensual pleasures, which is low, vulgar, belonging to ordinary people, ignoble, not connected with benefit; and that which is the pursuit of self-mortification, which is painful, ignoble, not connected with benefit. Not approaching these two extremes, monks, the middle practice has been fully awakened to by the Tathāgata, giving vision, giving knowledge, leading to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna.
"And what, monks, is that middle practice that has been fully awakened to by the Tathāgata, giving vision, giving knowledge, leading to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna? It is just this noble eightfold path, as follows - right view, etc. right concentration. This, monks, is that middle practice that has been fully awakened to by the Tathāgata, giving vision, giving knowledge, leading to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna.
"But this, monks, is the noble truth of suffering. Birth is suffering, ageing is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering, association with what is not dear is suffering, separation from what is dear is suffering, not getting what one wishes for is also suffering; in brief, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering. But this, monks, is the noble truth of the origin of suffering - It is this craving which leads to rebirth, accompanied by delight and lust, finding delight here and there, as follows - sensual craving, craving for existence, craving for non-existence. But this, monks, is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering - that which is the complete fading away and cessation of that very craving without remainder, the giving up, the relinquishment, the freedom, the non-attachment. But this, monks, is the noble truth of the practice leading to the cessation of suffering - It is just this noble eightfold path, as follows - right view, etc. right concentration.
'This is the noble truth of suffering' - thus, monks, regarding things not heard before, vision arose for me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose. 'But this noble truth of suffering is to be fully understood' - thus, monks, etc. 'has been fully understood' - thus, monks, regarding things not heard before, vision arose for me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose.
'This is the noble truth of the origin of suffering' - thus, monks, regarding things not heard before, vision arose for me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose. 'But this noble truth of the origin of suffering is to be abandoned' - thus, monks, etc. 'has been abandoned' - thus, monks, regarding things not heard before, vision arose for me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose.
'This is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering' - thus, monks, regarding things not heard before, vision arose for me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose. 'That noble truth of the cessation of suffering is to be realized' - thus, monks, etc. 'has been realized' - thus, monks, regarding things not heard before, vision arose for me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose.
'This is the noble truth of the practice leading to the cessation of suffering' - thus, monks, regarding things not heard before, vision arose for me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose. 'That noble truth of the practice leading to the cessation of suffering is to be developed' - thus, monks, etc. 'has been developed' - thus, monks, regarding things not heard before, vision arose for me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, true knowledge arose, light arose.
"As long as, monks, my knowledge and vision as it really is of these four noble truths with three rounds and twelve aspects was not well purified, I did not acknowledge, monks, in the world with its gods, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, among the generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its gods and humans, that I had fully awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. But when, monks, my knowledge and vision as it really is of these four noble truths with three rounds and twelve aspects was well purified, then I acknowledged, monks, in the world with its gods, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, among the generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its gods and humans, that I had fully awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. And knowledge and vision arose in me - 'Unshakable is my liberation, this is the last birth, there is now no more rebirth.'
This is what the Blessed One said. Delighted, the group of five monks rejoiced in what the Blessed One had said.
And while this explanation was being spoken, the stainless, spotless eye of the Teaching arose in the Venerable Koṇḍañña - "Whatever has the nature of arising, all that has the nature of cessation."
And when the wheel of the Teaching had been set in motion by the Blessed One, the terrestrial gods proclaimed: "This unsurpassed wheel of the Teaching has been set in motion by the Blessed One at Bārāṇasī in the Deer Park at Isipatana, not to be rolled back by any ascetic or brahmin or god or Māra or Brahmā or anyone in the world." Having heard the sound of the terrestrial gods, the gods ruled by the four great kings proclaimed, etc. Having heard the sound of the gods ruled by the four great kings, the Thirty-three gods, etc. the Yāma gods... etc. the Tusita gods... etc. the Nimmānaratī gods... etc. the Paranimmitavasavattī gods... etc. the gods of Brahmā's company proclaimed: "This unsurpassed wheel of the Teaching has been set in motion by the Blessed One at Bārāṇasī in the Deer Park at Isipatana, not to be rolled back by any ascetic or brahmin or god or Māra or Brahmā or anyone in the world."
Thus in that moment, in that instant, in that second, the sound rose up as far as the Brahmā world. And this ten-thousand world-system trembled, quaked, and shook violently, and an immeasurable, eminent light appeared in the world, surpassing the divine power of the gods.
Then the Blessed One uttered this inspired utterance - "Koṇḍañña has indeed understood; Koṇḍañña has indeed understood!" Thus indeed the Venerable Koṇḍañña came to have the name 'Aññāsikoṇḍañña.'

Treatise on Emptiness

Thus have I heard -
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park.
Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One;
having approached, he paid respect to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.
Seated to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One -
"'Empty is the world, empty is the world', venerable sir, is said. In what respect, venerable sir, is it said 'the world is empty'?" "Because, Ānanda, it is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self, therefore it is said 'the world is empty'. And what, Ānanda, is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self? The eye, Ānanda, is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self. Forms are empty of a self or of what belongs to a self. Eye-consciousness is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self. Eye-contact is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self. Whatever feeling arises with eye-contact as condition - whether pleasant or unpleasant or neither-unpleasant-nor-pleasant - that too is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self.

Mental phenomena are empty of a self or of what belongs to a self. Mind-consciousness is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self. Mind-contact is empty of a self or of what belongs to a self.
