The Chapter on Citakapūjaka

1.

The Life History of the Elder Citakapūjaka

1.

"Ajita by name, I was a brahmin then;

Wishing to make an oblation, I gathered various flowers.

2.

"Having seen the blazing funeral pyre of Sikhi, the kinsman of the world;

And having brought together those flowers, I scattered them on the funeral pyre.

3.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

4.

"Twenty-seven cosmic cycles ago from now, there were seven lords of men;

Named Supajjalita, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

5.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Citakapūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Citakapūjaka is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Pupphadhāraka

"I was a wearer of bark garments, clothed in an antelope hide as upper robe;

Five direct knowledges had arisen, I was one who stroked the moon.

7.

"Having seen Vipassī, the light of the world, who had come to me;

I held coral tree flowers for the Teacher.

8.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of bearing in mind.

9.

"Eighty-seven cosmic cycles from now, I was the sole lord of the earth;

Named Samantadhāraṇa, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

10.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Pupphadhāraka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Pupphadhāraka is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Chattadāyaka

11.

"My son went forth, wearing ochre robes then;

And he attained the state of a Buddha, quenched, honoured by the world.

12.

"Searching for my own son, I went behind;

To the funeral pyre of the great one who was quenched, I went.

13.

"Having raised my joined palms there, having paid homage to the funeral pyre, I;

And having held up a white umbrella, I raised it then.

14.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I raised up an umbrella;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving an umbrella.

15.

"Twenty-five cosmic cycles ago from now, seven were lords of men;

Named Mahāraha, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

16.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Chattadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Chattadāyaka is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Saddasaññaka

"When the sun had risen, great joy arose;

The manifestation in the world of the Buddha, the foremost, the great sage.

18.

"I heard the sound there, yet I do not see that Victor;

And having reached death, I recollected the perception of the Buddha.

19.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I obtained that perception then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

20.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Saddasaññaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Saddasaññaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Gosīsanikkhepaka

21.

"Having gone out from the monastery door, a rug of yellow sandalwood was spread by me;

I experience my own action, this is the fruit of past action.

22.

"Thoroughbreds swift as the wind, Sindh horses with rapid conveyance;

I experience all this, this is the fruit of the yellow sandalwood.

23.

"Oh, the service, the supreme service, well done by me in the good field;

Of the service done to the Community, nothing else is worth a fraction.

24.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I spread out my head;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the mat.

25.

"In the seventy-fifth cosmic cycle, named Supatiṭṭhita;

I was the sole one of great radiance, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

26.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Gosīsanikkhepaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Gosīsanikkhepaka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Pādapūjaka

27.

"On the Himalayan mountain, I was a kinnara then;

I saw the stainless Buddha, like the luminous sun with golden rays.

28.

"Having approached that Buddha, Vipassī, the leader of the world;

With sandalwood and tagara too, I besprinkled his feet then.

29.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I venerated the foot;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the foot.

30.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Pādapūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Pādapūjaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Desakittaka

31.

"Upasālaka by name, I was a brahmin then;

Having plunged into the forest grove, the elder of the world, the lord of men.

32.

"Having seen, I paid homage at the feet of the receiver of the world's offerings;

Having known me with a confident mind, the Buddha disappeared.

33.

"Having gone forth from the forest, I recollected the Buddha, the foremost;

Having praised that region, I rejoiced in heaven for a cosmic cycle.

34.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I praised that region;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of praising.

35.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Desakittaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Desakittaka is the seventh.

8.

The Life History of the Elder Saraṇagamaniya

36.

"On the Himalayan mountain, I was a hunter then;

I saw the Buddha Vipassī, the elder of the world, the lord of men.

37.

"Having attended upon the self-enlightened, I performed service;

And I went to refuge, of the lord of bipeds, such a one.

38.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, I went for refuge;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of going for refuge.

39.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Saraṇagamaniya spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Saraṇagamaniya is the eighth.

9.

The Life History of the Elder Ambapiṇḍiya

40.

"Romasa by name, renowned as a Titan;

A bunch of mangoes was given by me, to Vipassī, the great sage.

41.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave a mango then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving a mango.

42.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ambapiṇḍiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Ambapiṇḍiya is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Anusaṃsāvaka

43.

"While walking for almsfood, I saw Vipassī, the Victor;

I gave a ladleful of almsfood to the lord of bipeds, such a one.

44.

"With a confident mind, glad at heart, I paid respect then;

I proclaimed the benefits of the Buddha, for the attainment of the highest goal.

45.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, I proclaimed the benefits;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of proclaiming the benefits.

46.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Anusaṃsāvaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the elder Anusaṃsāvaka is the tenth.

The Citakapūjaka chapter is the thirtieth.

Its summary:

Citaka, Pārichatta, and Saddagosīsasanthara;

Pāda, Padesa, Saraṇa, Amba, and Saṃsāvaka too;

Forty-eight verses, counted by the wise.

Then the chapter summary:

Kaṇikāra, Hatthidada, Ālambaṇa, Udakāsana;

Tuvara and Thomaka too, Ukkhepa, Sīsupadhāna.

Paṇṇada and Citapūjī, and verses altogether;

Four hundred and fifty-one here.

Five hundred and twenty-five in all, and seventy-two beyond that;

Three hundred life histories, counted by those intent upon the good.

The ten chapters of the Kaṇikāra group.

The third hundred is complete.
