The Chapter on Paṇṇadāyaka
1.
The Life History of the Elder Paṇṇadāyaka
And as I sat there, the great sage approached me.
To him, seated on a mattress of leaves, a leaf was given by me.
3.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving leaves.
4.
The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."
Thus the Venerable Elder Paṇṇadāyaka spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Paṇṇadāyaka is the first.
2.
The Life History of the Elder Phaladāyaka
Having risen from concentration, he approached me for alms.
Jujube, marking-nut and marmelos, and sweet lovi-lovi fruits.
All that was given by me, with a clear mind.

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving fruit.
9.
Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.
10.
Thus the Venerable Elder Phaladāyaka spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Phaladāyaka is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Paccuggamaniya
Like a shining kakudha tree, the lord of men approaching.
I went out to meet him, with a clear mind.

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of going out to meet.
14.
Saparivāra by name, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.
15.
Thus the Venerable Elder Paccuggamaniya spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Paccuggamaniya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Ekapupphiya
16.
I saw the stainless Buddha, like the luminous sun with golden rays.
17.
One flower was given by me, to the lord of bipeds, such a one.
18.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekapupphiya spoke these verses.
The life history of the Elder Ekapupphiya is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Maghavapupphiya
20.
He, having attained concentration, very clear, undisturbed.
21.
Him I worshipped then with a maghava flower, the Self-Become One.
22.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

Thus the Venerable Elder Maghavapupphiya spoke these verses.
The life history of the elder Maghavapupphiya is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Upaṭṭhākadāyaka

The lord of bipeds, the great elephant, the elder of the world, the lord of men.
25.
An attendant was given by me, to Siddhattha, the great sage.
26.
Having risen from that seat, he departed facing east.
27.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of attendance.
28.
Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.
29.
Thus the Venerable Elder Upaṭṭhākadāyaka spoke these verses.
The life history of the elder Upaṭṭhākadāyaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Apadāniya

And I paid homage to their feet with my head, devoted, with my own hands.

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of praising.

Thus the Venerable Elder Apadāniya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Sattāhapabbajita

Disaster befell me, there was a split among relatives before.
34.
Delighted there for seven days, through longing for the Teacher's instruction.
35.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of going forth.
36.
Named Sunikkhamā, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.
37.
Thus the Venerable Elder Gone Forth for Seven Days spoke these verses.
The life history of the elder Sattāhapabbajita is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Buddhupaṭṭhāyika
38.
Having taken my hand, led me to the Great Sage.
39.
I attended upon them attentively, devoted, with my own hands.
40.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of attendance.
41.
Named Samaṇupaṭṭhāka, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.
42.
Thus the Venerable Elder Buddhupaṭṭhāyika spoke these verses.
The life history of the elder Buddhupaṭṭhāyika is the ninth.

The Life History of the Elder Pubbaṅgamiya
43.
I was their forerunner, for the attainment of the highest goal.
44.
They attended attentively, devoted, with their own hands.
45.
They pervaded with a mind of friendliness, self-become, unconquered.
46.
And having reached death, we went to divinity.
47.
I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of self-restraint.
48.
Thus the Venerable Elder Pubbaṅgamiya spoke these verses.
The life history of the elder Pubbaṅgamiya is the tenth.
The Paṇṇadāyaka chapter is the twenty-ninth.
Its summary:
Upaṭṭhākāpadāna and Pabbajjā, Buddhupaṭṭhāka;
And Pubbaṅgama - forty-eight verses have been proclaimed.
