The Chapter on Tuvaradāyaka

1.

The Life History of the Elder Tuvaradāyaka

1.

"Formerly I was a deer hunter, in the forest grove;

Having prepared and taken pigeon peas, I gave them to the Community.

2.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of tuvara."

3.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tuvaradāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Tuvaradāyaka is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Nāgakesariya

4.

"Having made the bow unerring, I entered into the midst of the forest;

Having seen a small lake in full bloom, with shimmering splendour arisen.

5.

"Having held up with both hands, having made a salutation with joined palms at my head;

I placed it upon the Buddha, Tissa, the kinsman of the world.

6.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

7.

"In the seventy-third cosmic cycle, seven were named Kesara;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

8.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Nāgakesariya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Nāgakesariya is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Naḷinakesariya

"In the middle of a natural lake, I dwell as a water-cock;

I saw the god of gods, going through the sky-path.

10.

"Having taken a lion-flower with my beak, with a clear mind;

I placed it upon the Buddha, Tissa, the kinsman of the world.

11.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

12.

"In the seventy-third cosmic cycle, seven were named Kesara;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

13.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Naḷinakesariya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Naḷinakesariya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Viravapupphiya

"With a thousand who eliminated the mental corruptions, the leader of the world goes forth;

Having taken virava flowers, I placed them upon the Buddha.

15.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

16.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Viravapupphiya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Viravapupphiya is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Kuṭidhūpaka

17.

"Of the Blessed One Siddhattha, I was a hut guardian;

From time to time I fumigated, devoted, with my own hands.

18.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving incense.

19.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kuṭidhūpaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Kuṭidhūpaka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Pattadāyaka

"With supreme mastery, to Siddhattha, the great sage;

A gift of a bowl was given by me, to such a one who was upright.

21.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the gift that I gave then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the gift of a bowl.

22.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Pattadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Pattadāyaka is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Dhātupūjaka

"When the Lord of the World was quenched, Siddhattha, the Highest of Men;

One relic was obtained by me, of the lord of bipeds, such a one.

24.

"Having taken that relic of the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun;

For five years I tended him, as if the highest among men were still standing.

25.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I worshipped that relic then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the relic.

26.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Dhātupūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Dhātupūjaka is the seventh.

8.

The Life History of the Elder Sattalipupphapūjaka

27.

"Seven sattali flowers, having placed upon my head then;

I placed upon the Buddha, Vessabhū, the Highest of Men.

28.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

29.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sattalipupphapūjaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Sattalipupphapūjaka is the eighth.

9.

The Life History of the Elder Bimbijāliya

30.

"The Conqueror named Padumuttara, the self-become one, the foremost person;

He makes known the four truths, he explains the Deathless state.

31.

"Having spread out bimbijālaka flowers, I then;

Placed them upon the Buddha, the lord of bipeds, such a one.

32.

"Sixty-eight cosmic cycles from now, four with lion's manes;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

33.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Bimbijāliya spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Bimbijāliya is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Uddālakadāyaka

34.

"Kakudha by name, self-become, unconquered;

Having gone forth from the wilds, he arrived at the great river.

35.

"Having taken an uddālaka flower, I gave to the self-born one;

To the restrained one, the upright one, I with a gladdened mind.

36.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the flower that I honoured;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the gift of flowers.

37.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Uddālakadāyaka spoke these verses.

The life history of the Elder Uddālakadāyaka is the tenth.

The Chapter on Tuvaradāyaka is the twenty-fifth.

Its summary:

Tuvara, Nāga, Naḷina, Viravī, Kuṭidhūpaka;

Patta, Dhātu, Sattali, Bimbī, and with Uddālaka;

Thirty-seven verses, counted by the wise.
