The Chapter on Kumuda

1.

The Life History of the Elder Kumudamāliya

1.

"On the Himalayan mountain, there was a great natural lake;

Born there, I was a demon, of terrible form and great power.

2.

"White water lilies bloom there, wheel-sized ones arise;

And I gather those flowers, for the assembly of the powerful one then.

3.

"The Blessed One Atthadassī, the lord of bipeds, the lord of men;

Having seen the contracted flowers, came to my presence.

4.

"And having approached the self-enlightened, the god of gods, the lord of men;

And having held up all the flowers, I placed them upon the Buddha.

5.

"As far as the Himalayan boundary, that assembly then was;

Endowed with a roof of that extent, the Tathāgata went.

6.

"In eighteen hundred cosmic cycles, the flower that I offered;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

7.

"Fifteen cosmic cycles from now, seven were lords of men;

Named Sahassaratha, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

8.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Kumudamāliya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Kumudamāliya is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Nisseṇidāyaka

"For the Blessed One Koṇḍañña, the foremost of the world, such a one;

For the purpose of ascending the mansion, a ladder was made by me.

10.

"By that confidence of mind, having experienced accomplishment;

I bear my final body in the teaching of the Fully Self-Enlightened One.

11.

"In thirty-one thousand cosmic cycles, there were three;

Several kings named, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

12.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Nisseṇidāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Nisseṇidāyaka is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Rattipupphiya

13.

"Formerly I was a deer hunter, in the forest grove;

I saw the Buddha Vipassī, the god of gods, the lord of men.

14.

"Having seen a kuṭaja tree growing on the earth, flowering at night;

Having taken it up with its root, I presented it to the great sage.

15.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I offered the flower;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the gift of flowers.

16.

"And eight cosmic cycles ago from now, I was named Suppasanna;

Endowed with the seven treasures, I was a king of great power.

17.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Rattipupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Rattipupphiya is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Udapānadāyaka

"A well was made by me for the Blessed One Vipassī;

And having given almsfood, I dedicated it then.

19.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the well.

20.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Udapānadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Udapānadāyaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Sīhāsanadāyaka

21.

"When the Lord of the World, the leader Padumuttara, was quenched;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I gave a lion's seat.

22.

"With many garlands of fragrance, bringing happiness in the present life;

Having made offerings there, many people are extinguished.

23.

"With a confident mind, glad at heart, having paid homage to the highest enlightenment;

For a hundred thousand cosmic cycles, I was not reborn in an unfortunate realm.

24.

"In fifteen thousand cosmic cycles, eight were they;

Named Siluccaya, kings, universal monarchs.

25.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sīhāsanadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Sīhāsanadāyaka is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Maggadattika

"The Blessed One Anomadassī, the lord of bipeds, the lord of men;

For the sake of happiness in the present life, walked up and down in the open air.

27.

"Having raised my feet with flowers, the splendour remained on my head;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, having paid homage, I scattered flowers.

28.

"In twenty thousand cosmic cycles from now, there were five people;

Named Pupphacchadaniya by name, universal monarchs of great power.

29.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Maggadattika spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Maggadattika is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Ekadīpiya

"To the sage Padumuttara, at the excellent Bodhi tree, the sal tree;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I gave a single lamp.

31.

"When arising in existence, reborn in an accumulation of merit;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving a lamp.

32.

"Sixteen thousand cosmic cycles from now, these four people;

Candābhā by name, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

33.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Ekadīpiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Ekadīpiya is the seventh.

The ninth recitation section.

The Life History of the Elder Maṇipūjaka

"On this side of the Himalayas, a small river flowed;

And near its bank, the Self-Become One dwelt then.

35.

"Having held up a jewelled divan, well-decked and delightful;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I placed it upon the Buddha.

36.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the gem which I placed upon it;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

37.

"And twelve cosmic cycles from now, named Sataraṃsī;

Eight were kings, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

38.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Maṇipūjaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Maṇipūjaka is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Tikicchaka

"In the city of Bandhumatī, I was a well-trained physician;

Bringing happiness to the multitude, for the sick who were in pain.

40.

"Having seen an ascetic who was ill, virtuous, of great effulgence;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I gave medicine then.

41.

"He was healthy, that very ascetic with controlled faculties;

Asoka by name, the attendant of Vipassī.

42.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave medicine;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of medicine.

43.

"And eight cosmic cycles ago from now, one named Sabbosadha;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

44.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tikicchaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Tikicchaka is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Saṅghupaṭṭhāka

45.

"Under the Blessed One Vessabhū, I was a monastery attendant;

With a confident mind, glad at heart, I attended on the highest Community.

46.

"Thirty-one cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of attendance.

47.

"Seven cosmic cycles from now, seven were with water;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

48.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Saṅghupaṭṭhāka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Saṅghupaṭṭhāka is the tenth.

The Kumuda Chapter is the eighteenth.

Its summary:

Kumuda and then Nisseṇī, Rattika, Udapānada;

Sīhāsanī, Maggadada, Ekadīpī, Maṇippada;

Tikicchaka, Upaṭṭhāka, fifty-one verses.
