The Chapter on Sudhā

1.

The Life History of the Elder Sudhāpiṇḍiya

1.

"For one who venerates those worthy of veneration, whether Buddhas or disciples;

Who have transcended obsession, who have crossed over sorrow and lamentation.

2.

"For one who venerates such ones as these, quenched, safe from every quarter;

The merit cannot be reckoned, even this much by anyone.

3.

"Even if one should make a warrior lord of the four continents;

This is not worth a sixteenth fraction of one devotional offering.

4.

"At the shrine of Siddhattha, the highest of men, in between the split sections;

A lump of lime was given by me, with a clear mind.

5.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, the action which I did then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of restoration.

6.

"Thirty cosmic cycles from now, named Paṭisaṅkhāra;

Accomplished with the seven jewels, thirteen universal monarchs.

7.

"The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances;

The six higher knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sudhāpiṇḍiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Sudhāpiṇḍiya is the first.

The Life History of the Elder Sucintika

8.

"To Tissa, the Protector of the World, I gave a pure chair;

Joyful, with a joyful mind, to the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.

9.

"Eighteen cosmic cycles ago from now, I was a king of great splendour;

Wealth was abundant, and beds were not few.

10.

Having given a chair to the Buddha, with a clear mind;

I experience my own action, well done by myself in the past.

11.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave that chair then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the gift of a chair.

12.

"Thirty-eight cosmic cycles ago from now, there were three universal monarchs;

Ruci and Uparuci, and Mahāruci the third.

13.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sucintika spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Sucintika is the second.

The Life History of the Elder Aḍḍhaceḷaka

14.

"For the Blessed One Tissa, I gave half a cloth;

I have attained supreme wisdom, bestowed by one in misfortune.

15.

Having given half a cloth, I rejoiced in heaven for a cosmic cycle;

In the remaining cosmic cycles, wholesome was caused to be done by me.

16.

"Ninety-two cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave cloth then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving cloth.

17.

"Forty-nine cosmic cycles ago, kings, universal monarchs;

Named Samantacchadana, there were thirty-two lords of men.

18.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Aḍḍhaceḷaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Aḍḍhaceḷaka is the third.

The Life History of the Elder Sūcidāyaka

19.

"Formerly I was a blacksmith, in Bandhumā, the best city;

A gift of needles was given by me, to Vipassī, the great sage.

20.

"Knowledge similar to a diamond's tip, arises through such action;

I am dispassionate, I am liberated, I have attained the elimination of mental corruptions.

21.

"In all existences in the past, in the present and in the future;

With knowledge I investigated all, this is the fruit of giving a needle.

22.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, there were seven named Vajira;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

23.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Sūcidāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Sūcidāyaka is the fourth.

The Life History of the Elder Gandhamāliya

24.

"For the Blessed One Siddhattha, I made a fragrant stupa;

Covered with jasmine flowers, made befitting a Buddha.

25.

"Resembling a golden flame, the Buddha, the supreme leader of the world;

Like a blazing blue water-lily, like a burning fire.

26.

Like an excellent bull-tiger, like a well-born maned lion;

Seated, the foremost of ascetics, honoured by the community of monks.

27.

"Having paid homage at the Teacher's feet, I departed facing north;

Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, since I gave a garland of fragrance.

28.

"By the fruit of the service done to the Buddha, I distinctively;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the Buddha.

29.

"In the thirty-ninth cosmic cycle minus one, there were sixteen;

Named Devagandha, those kings, universal monarchs.

30.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Gandhamāliya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Gandhamāliya is the fifth.

The Life History of the Elder Tipupphiya

31.

"Formerly I was a deer hunter, in the forest grove;

Having seen a green trumpet-flower tree, I scattered three flowers upon it.

32.

"Having taken the fallen leaves, I threw them outside then;

Pure within, pure without, well liberated, without mental corruptions.

33.

"As if face to face with the self-enlightened, Vipassī, the leader of the world;

Having paid respect to the trumpet-flower tree, there I deceased.

34.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, when I venerated the enlightenment;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of honouring the enlightenment.

35.

"Named All-Pleasing, thirteen were the kings;

Thirty-three cosmic cycles from now, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

36.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Tipupphiya spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Tipupphiya is the sixth.

The Life History of the Elder Madhupiṇḍika

37.

"Having seen in the forest grove, quiet and undisturbed;

Siddhattha, the foremost of sages, the receiver of oblations.

38.

"The great elephant with self quenched, like a leading bull of good breed;

Shining like the healing star, venerated by the community of gods.

39.

"Joy was mine at that very moment, knowledge arose at that very moment;

Having given honey to the Teacher who had emerged from concentration.

40.

"Having paid homage at the Teacher's feet, I departed facing east;

In the thirty-fourth cosmic cycle, I was a king named Sudassana.

41.

"Honey flows from the lotus roots, and instantly in the food;

A rain of honey rained down, this is the fruit of past action.

42.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, when I gave that honey then;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of giving honey.

43.

"Thirty-four cosmic cycles from now, those four were beautiful to see;

Accomplished with the seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

44.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Madhupiṇḍika spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Madhupiṇḍika is the seventh.

8.

The Life History of the Elder Senāsanadāyaka

45.

"To the Blessed One Siddhattha, I gave a mattress of leaves;

And offerings all around, I scattered flowers.

46.

"Such a mansion, virtuous and charming, I experience, very precious;

And costly flowers rain down upon my bed.

47.

"I share the same bed, on a variegated flower-strewn rug;

And a shower of flowers on the bed, rains down at that very moment.

48.

"Ninety-four cosmic cycles ago from now, I gave a mattress of leaves;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of the mat.

49.

"Named Tiṇasanthara, these seven universal monarchs;

Five cosmic cycles from now, these lords of men arose.

50.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Senāsanadāyaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Senāsanadāyaka is the eighth.

The Life History of the Elder Veyyāvaccaka

51.

"Of the Blessed One Vipassī, there was a great group of guilds;

I was a steward, appointed in all duties.

52.

"I have no gift to give, to the Fortunate One, the great sage;

I venerated the Teacher's feet, with a clear mind.

53.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, I performed service;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of service.

54.

"And eight cosmic cycles ago from now, I was a king named Sucintita;

Endowed with the seven treasures, a wheel-turning monarch of great power.

55.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder Veyyāvaccaka spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Veyyāvaccaka is the ninth.

10.

The Life History of the Elder Buddhupaṭṭhāka

56.

"Of the Blessed One Vipassī, I was a conch-shell blower;

I was constantly engaged in attendance, of the Fortunate One, the great sage.

57.

"See the fruit of attendance, upon the Protector of the World, such a one;

Sixty thousand musical instruments, surround me always.

58.

"Ninety-one cosmic cycles ago from now, I attended on the great sage;

I do not know of an unfortunate realm, this is the fruit of attendance.

59.

"Twenty-four cosmic cycles ago from now, named Mahānigghosa;

Sixteen were kings, wheel-turning monarchs of great power.

60.

"The four analytical knowledges, etc. the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."

Thus the Venerable Elder, the Buddha's attendant, spoke these verses.

The Life History of the Elder Buddhupaṭṭhāka is the tenth.

The Sudhā Chapter is the tenth.

Its summary:

Sudhā, Sucintī and Ceḷa, Sūcī and Gandhamāliya;

Tipupphiya, Madhusena, Veyyāvacca and Upaṭṭhāka;

And sixty verses have been praised in this chapter.

Then the chapter summary:

The Buddha Chapter is first, Sīhāsaniya and Subhūti;

Kuṇḍadhāna and Upāli, Bījanī, Sakacintī and;

Nāgasamāla, Timira, with the Sudhā Chapter these are ten;

Fourteen hundred verses, and fifty-five as well.

The Decad of the Buddha Chapter.

The First Hundred is complete.
