There are two characteristics of the truths.
The characteristic of the conditioned and the characteristic of the unconditioned -
these are the two characteristics of the truths.
How many characteristics of the truths are there? There are six characteristics of the truths. Of the conditioned truths, arising is evident, passing away is evident, change in their duration is evident; of the unconditioned truth, no arising is evident, no passing away is evident, no change in its duration is evident - these are the six characteristics of the truths.
How many characteristics of the truths are there? There are twelve characteristics of the truths. Of the truth of suffering, arising is evident, passing away is evident, change in its duration is evident. Of the truth of origin, arising is evident, passing away is evident, change in its duration is evident. Of the truth of the path, arising is evident, passing away is evident, change in its duration is evident. Of the truth of cessation, no arising is evident, no passing away is evident, no change in its duration is evident - these are the twelve characteristics of the truths.
Of the four truths, how many are wholesome, how many are unwholesome, how many are indeterminate? The truth of origin is unwholesome, the truth of the path is wholesome, the truth of cessation is indeterminate. The truth of suffering may be wholesome, may be unwholesome, may be indeterminate.
Could three truths be included in one truth, and one truth be included in three truths? By way of basis and by method, there could be. And how could there be? Whatever truth of suffering is unwholesome, the truth of origin is unwholesome - thus in the sense of unwholesome, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. Whatever truth of suffering is wholesome, the truth of the path is wholesome - thus in the sense of wholesome, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. Whatever truth of suffering is indeterminate, the truth of cessation is indeterminate - thus in the sense of indeterminate, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. Thus there could be three truths included in one truth, and one truth included in three truths, by way of basis and by method.
