"Monks, there are these seven underlying tendencies.
Which seven?
The underlying tendency to sensual lust, the underlying tendency to aversion, the underlying tendency to wrong view, the underlying tendency to sceptical doubt, the underlying tendency to conceit, the underlying tendency to lust for existence, the underlying tendency to ignorance -
these, monks, are the seven underlying tendencies.
For the direct knowledge, full understanding, utter elimination, and abandoning of these seven underlying tendencies, monks, etc.
this noble eightfold path is to be developed."
