OUR VISION

A world in which each person can find true happiness by understanding the nature of ultimate reality as taught by the Buddha, and ultimately achieve Nibbāna, the highest mental peace.

THE CHALLENGE

For over 150 years, scholars around the world have tried to translate the vast wisdom of the Pāli Canon (approximately 10 million words) into English. The bulk of the main texts in the Tipiṭaka have been translated; however, most of these translations were produced by various translators over different eras, using different terminology, reflecting different interpretations of the Canon, and resulting in numerous versions of the same passage. Therefore, instead of a single translation of the Canon, we now have a patchwork quilt of numerous pieces of the Canon, spread out among dozens of different sources; and thus, there is little consistency in how the main terms and concepts of the Canon are rendered into English.

Therefore, for sincere seekers, there exists no one location where the complete teachings of the Buddha may be studied in a coherent and consistent manner. Readers must choose between translations of the Canon that contradict one another, reconcile the terminology differences for themselves, and accept that major layers of the Canon do not exist in their native tongue.

There are several contemporary attempts to utilise AI in order to translate Pāli texts. However, most of these efforts rely on free AI applications that have limitations and therefore produce inconsistent translations, characterised by errors in terminology, incorrect rendering, and hallucinations by the AI, resulting in the creation of new words and/or meanings that do not appear in the original text. Additionally, the method employed to utilise AI to translate the Canon lacks scientific rigour, and therefore, the resulting translations produced by this process should not be relied upon for serious study or practice. Unlike other contemporary attempts to utilise AI to translate the Canon, PaliVerse employs Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.5 — one of the most advanced LLM available at the time for translatiing the Canon— and also utilises professional translation infrastructure and a high degree of quality control, resulting in a degree of accuracy and consistency in the translation of the Canon that is unmatched by general-purpose AI applications.

Furthermore, explaining the Canon’s teachings is not limited to translating it. General-purpose AI systems, when queried about the Buddha’s teachings, produce inaccurate responses, omit important details, provide generic, superficial answers, fail to reference the actual texts of the Canon, and, most importantly, create fictional information and present it as if it were part of the Canon. Thus, for a sincere practitioner seeking reliable guidance, general-purpose AI systems provide not only unhelpful but also potentially damaging information that undermines their understanding of the Dhamma.

THE INSPIRATION

The history of PaliVerse is not one of good fortune. Like all the things the Buddha taught, it evolved through cause and condition — the vision, the knowledge and the intention were all present long before the technology existed to enable them to come to fruition.

In 2018, Michael Xynos founded the Athens Theravāda Buddhist Centre. One of the primary objectives of the centre, as clearly articulated in the articles of incorporation, was to provide translations of the Pāli Canon into English, Greek, and multiple other languages. At that time, there was no AI capable of carrying out such a monumental task. From a practical perspective, translating the entire Canon was unrealistic due to the Canon’s magnitude, the scarcity of Pāli expertise, and the financial burden of traditional translation methods.

In 2019, Most Venerable Ñāṇadassana Mahāthera — a Greek forest monk who has spent nearly half a century studying the Tipiṭaka, the commentaries and sub-commentaries, and practising meditation for nearly four decades — accepted Michael’s invitation to teach laypeople at the Centre. He adopted a unique approach to teaching — every teaching he provided was directly related to the Canon, and therefore, he made the most complex teachings accessible to practitioners while remaining faithful to the source material. During his time at the Centre, Michael and the community observed something truly exceptional — Bhante maintained complete, uncompromised Vinaya practice in an urban setting. The community itself was educated in supporting Bhante’s monastic discipline — Greek laypeople with no previous tradition of Theravāda practice experienced firsthand the important role of the laity in maintaining the Saṅgha. Every Sunday, the community took more than ten precepts, engaging in a level of practice seldom observed in traditionally Buddhist countries. Together, they illustrated that the Vinaya preserved in the Canon is not merely an archaic relic of the past, but a living practice that can be applied in the modern world. As Bhante frequently told his students: “When there is a will, there is a way.”

In 2022, Large Language Models emerged, and along with them, the technology that could, for the first time in history, make translating the Canon a realistic possibility.

None of this was coincidental. The vision was formed prior to the teacher’s arrival. The teacher arrived before AI technology emerged. And when AI technology emerged, the knowledge, methodology, and goal were already in place.

In 2025, before Bhante Ñāṇadassana returned to solitary practice in Sri Lanka, the pressure to act became immediate. The authentic knowledge he had conveyed — with references, accessible — could not remain restricted to the few lay individuals who had benefited from his six years of teaching. It had to be preserved and disseminated to all sincere seekers of the Dhamma.

PaliVerse is the realisation of that vision: ensuring that the authentic knowledge the Venerable Ñāṇadassana devoted his life to studying and six incredible years to teaching in Greece reaches all sincere seekers of the Dhamma.

WHAT PALIVERSE OFFERS

PaliVerse is built on two foundations: a complete translation of the Canon and a reliable explanation of the Canon’s teachings.

TRANSLATIONS

PaliVerse is the first platform that offers a complete English translation of the entire Tipiṭaka — the root texts of the Pāli Canon — in a single, unified, and freely accessible environment. All three Piṭakas (Sutta, Vinaya, and Abhidhamma) have been translated, and the translation of the commentaries and sub-commentaries is underway.

Complete Translations

The complete Tipiṭaka (Sutta, Vinaya, Abhidhamma) has been translated using consistent terminology and methodology throughout the entire canon. The commentaries (Aṭṭhakathā), sub-commentaries (Ṭīkā), and other essential texts (Aññā) are currently being translated and will be added incrementally.

Interactive Access

Interconnected access to all three Piṭakas. As commentaries and sub-commentaries are translated, root texts will be linked to their commentarial literature, enabling readers to easily navigate between layers of teaching.

EXPLANATIONS

A translation alone is insufficient. The teachings are vast and often complex, and even a faithful translation can be challenging to comprehend without assistance. PaliVerse provides an AI-based explanation system that facilitates comprehension of the Canon’s teachings to practitioners and students at every level.

Each explanation and each answer generated by the system in response to a user’s inquiry is anchored in the Canon itself. Prior to generating a response, the system accesses the relevant passages in the Tipiṭaka. Consequently, the reader receives an explanation that is grounded in the actual teachings, not in the AI’s general knowledge or inventions. Each response includes references to the source passages in the Canon, and the reader can verify these references with direct links to the source passages contained within PaliVerse. As commentaries and sub-commentaries are translated, the explanation system will draw upon these deeper layers as well.

Thus, for the first time ever, any person may pose a question regarding the Buddha’s teachings and receive an accurate, referenced answer derived from the complete Pāli Canon — without having to search through millions of words individually, and without the danger of being misled by AI hallucinations.

HOW THE TRANSLATION WAS CREATED

PaliVerse integrates established professional translation methodology with cutting-edge AI technology. The text segmentation and translation memory required to maintain consistency in terminology across the entire corpus were managed with Trados Studio — a leading computer-assisted translation tool. The actual translation was conducted by Large Language Models, utilising customised terminology management, word-level lemmatisation, and intensive prompt design.

Using this hybrid approach, we achieved what neither traditional scholarship nor AI could attain — term-by-term consistency throughout the entire corpus, at the level of sentences and phrases. The Pāli text was translated directly to the target language — not through an intermediate language — thereby preserving the meaning lost in pivot languages.

DHAMMA DĀNA

PaliVerse is operating as a non-profit organisation based on the principle of Dhamma Dāna — the gift of the teachings.

The core translations are available at no charge to all users. This is not a trial or a test version — the complete Tipiṭaka is available at no charge, and as commentaries and sub-commentaries are translated, they too will be available at no charge — as the teachings were always intended to be shared.

Memberships — including the AI-based Q&A system and personal study materials — are available to users. Funding is solely for the continued operation of the platform, further expansion of translations into multiple languages, and the support of the monastic communities that preserve the tradition through their Vinaya practice — honouring both the teachings and those who have dedicated their lives to preserving the traditions.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR PALIVERSE

PaliVerse is an evolving entity. The translations are constantly improving through feedback from scholars and advances in technology. Some current and upcoming developments include:

Completing the English translation of the commentaries (Aṭṭhakathā), sub-commentaries (Ṭīkā), and other essential texts (Aññā) of the Canon. Developing translations into additional languages, beginning with Greek and modern Sinhala, and continuing from there. Developing an adaptive learning system to facilitate personalised study of the teachings. Developing a mobile app to provide daily guidance from the complete Canon. Establishing an international advisory committee of scholars to ensure continued quality control of the translations.

The Canon is immense. The task of making it available to the public has just begun.
