Be honest. Most of us would.<\/p>\n<p>That is exactly what a rich young householder was counting on when he came to the Buddha with a friendly proposal: have one of your monks work a public miracle, and this whole town will be yours. The Buddha refused him. Three times. And then he said something almost no one expects from a religious teacher: that he is troubled, ashamed, and disgusted by miraculous displays \u2014 powers he himself possesses. His reason cuts as deep today as it did then. Any wonder, however real, can be explained away \u2014 there&#8217;s a charm for that, there&#8217;s a trick for that. The moment someone says it, the display has no reply. Spectacle cannot carry truth. Only teaching can.<\/p>\n<p>Then the Buddha tells a story that reads like nothing else in ancient literature. One of his own monks takes a single question \u2014 where does everything finally end? \u2014 and carries it up through heaven after heaven, past kings of gods, to the Great Brahm\u0101 himself, the self-proclaimed All-Seeing Creator. Who takes the monk by the arm, leads him out of earshot of his worshippers, and whispers a confession you will not forget.<\/p>\n<p>And when the monk brings his question home at last, the Buddha does the most surprising thing of all: he refuses to answer it. Not because there is no answer \u2014 because the question is built wrong.
